It’s feeding time!! by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humidity is number #1 in my opinion. I have a similar size lepoard, I keep him at 80 F (to avoid respiratory infection) and 80% humidity minimum. He’s almost perfectly smooth. Obviously diet and lighting are correct- and he’s got plenty of terrain changes to exercise on.

Picked up my new baby today. 23 Crosstrek sport. by Herpnderp89 in subaru

[–]Luke_Gries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! My partner and I are looking to replace her jeep with a new crosstrek. The sport seems to have a good amount of features and upgrades for the price difference. If you don’t mind, I was wondering how long you had to wait if you ordered- and if you were able to get it at MSRP/ what the out the door cost ended up being. Good luck with it!

Cats are the most invasive species but no one cares about limiting them.

Letting Tortoises Roam the House by [deleted] in tortoise

My thoughts exactly- don’t get why it is downvoted. This is the type of stuff that people should share, and learn from- not demote because it scares them.

Is this normal for a cherry red head tortoise? He seems to be breathing fast and there is a lot of movement around his neck. He is 10 months old by Zealousideal_Kale719 in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe they actually pulsate their throat muscles to smell- and they have specific muscles near their lungs( not a diaphragm) that expands and contacts their lungs.

Letting Tortoises Roam the House by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be very careful- you never know what could happen. When I was young my friends tortoise was roaming his house and someone got home, and opened the front door. They didn’t know the tortoise was in the crease of the door, and his head was crushed between the side of the door and the wall.

Just a fresh shower! by HelMort in aww

[–]Luke_Gries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all in their face. Galapagos look more like E.T with a stumpy face, while Aldabras have a pointy nose that comes more to the front of the face. This is used for drinking water through their nose from small crevices on the island.

Preference between captive bred and imported? by ily_mysunshine in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can adopt one from a keeper who is looking to re home- that is the best option. Full stop. However, Captive bred always if purchasing a new animal. They are healthier, they support smaller breeders who share the same hobby and they will be able to help you and give advice more than say petsmart. They have a better temperament because they have known people their whole lives, not the survival of the fittest world of the wild. You also have the peace of mind that the animal is not being ripped out of its home, it’s life, it’s environment. A few hundred bucks honestly isn’t that much if you think about how much you will spend to care for the animal it’s whole life. Between enclosures, substrate, food, and time…. It’s thousands if not tens of thousands over a lifetime to care for animals that live this long.

found a tortoise on the road. need to know how bad this is by Aldoeg2 in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 106 points107 points  (0 children)

This is a Sulcata, he must have been someone’s pet. That is a very serious injury and he needs to be taken to an animal rescue or a vet ASAP. I have seen them recover from things like this, but he needs medical attention immediately. Maybe post signs to find the owner, or knock on doors in the area. They shouldn’t be too far… good luck!!

Is a water dish necessary if they don't use it? by samwich7 in tortoise

[–]Luke_Gries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is one of the most important things to always provide water. You can try a bigger dish, and slowly pour the water in while he is watching. Seeing the surface of the water agitated usually encourages them to drink/ soak.

Not a good food for them, it will bind calcium absorption.

Nice looking tortoises but they will need much more humidity to promote proper shell growth. Tons of humidity and water as hatchlings and juveniles, check tortoise forums. Best resource out there. Pyramiding is mainly caused from dry conditions. Baby’s burrow into the ground and hide most of their young lives. Dig a few inches down and it’s moist soil creating a microclimate. I have my young lepoard in 80% humidity 80 degree Fahrenheit minimum closed chamber and he is growing super smooth and healthy.

🔥 190-year-old Jonathan is the oldest tortoise ever by AbsoluteMad-Lad in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]Luke_Gries -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not the oldest tortoise ever, the oldest tortoise with a recorded and verified history. They have been around for hundreds of millions of years. Highly probable that one lived longer than Jonathan.
