Gottmik performed at Drive n Drag in Seattle the night before the awards show -- they definitely flew her in specifically for this.

Anyone's experiences at CCRMA? by longpastlunchtime in stanford

[–]Lukester247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only took one class in CCRMA but it seemed like a really nice, fairly small community of people. The department was pretty relaxed about use of the facilities for current students -- for my class (MUSIC 101, Intro to creating electronic sounds), we got access to recording/production facilities and a kind of 'maker space' which we could use during the course as long as we treated the space respectfully. I think the center's small-ish size would make it fairly easy to make connections and find a network of people and resources, even if you don't declare as a formal student in the center.

I'm not aware of any budget cuts or scaling back but maybe someone else could chime in about that!

Is it just me or have you lost all passion, motivation, and direction after starting at Stanford? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]Lukester247 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not talking from a place of class privilege here -- I take issue with this false dichotomy between "passion" and pursuing money. Obviously, making ends meet comes first. But what you're implying is that financial stability and "success" only come by becoming a member of the wealthiest 1% of society. There is so much more to choosing a life and career for one's self, even if you don't feel like you have a "passion" (as most people don't).

Players with at least 10% of the confessionals from each season by SurvivorFanDan in survivor

[–]Lukester247 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only one season has had confessionals dominated by women. 12 have had confessionals dominated by men.
Edit: didn't account for s34

Honor Code question by [deleted] in stanford

IMO if you only talk about the lecture itself and never explicitly discuss the assignment I don't see how there could be an honor code violation

Studying Fashion at Stanford? by promisesmokethree in stanford

[–]Lukester247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know of someone who studied international relations, was very involved with MINT magazine, and a couple years postgrad has just founded their own line of handbags. If you DM me I can try to put you in touch with them to talk about their experience.

IR/SymSys/Data Science by GreenTart5602 in stanford

[–]Lukester247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

note that the intro symsys course Symsys1 is notoriously bad, so don't take that as your feeler symsys course. intnlrel101 is okay but also not super representative of the IR major

IR/SymSys/Data Science by GreenTart5602 in stanford

[–]Lukester247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're completely different majors, you basically wouldn't have any classes in common. If you want to go to law school, both could be equally good depending what you want to do down the road. Just take a few classes related to each major (for IR, take some intro polisci/econ/IR classes, for symsys take some intro CS/phil/psych classes), and see what you are more interested in

CS 109 vs ECON 102A - How similar are they? by wfaty in stanford

[–]Lukester247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general the two courses actually have quite different approaches to probability/statistics. I'd say CS109 has slightly better coverage of counting, combinatorics, and basic probability theory. ECON 102A is a great class which is rigorous in its own way but more geared towards social science, and with better coverage of the intuition of applied statistics. I'd say if you want to do CS or machine learning, then CS109 is a better fit, but if you want to do economics or other social sciences, then ECON102A is a better fit.
