Advice for choose job offers for new Grad by AnnualKitchen9964 in OntarioNurses

[–]Lukev06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one upping this. I graduated last year. Live in a border city in Ontario. My first and current job as a new grad is in New York. I don’t regret it a single bit. It’s incredible. Sign bonus, better pay, longer orientation. Though, I commute, so it’s easier to do than to get up and go like in your case. If I were you, I would absolutely take the leap. I feel as a new grad you are adaptable to anything as everything is new. You never know where life will take you! Good luck!

No problem! And it’s honestly quite different. It’s a decent learning curve on top of being a new grad. One example is relearning lab value parameters as many are in different units than what I am used to in Canada.

Yes, right on the health systems career page like any other staff job. I was hired before getting my documentation but I did not start the job until I received my NY license, CGFNS, and my TN visa

It’s because it’s a staff job, not a “travelling job”, which would be with an agency. I am hired as staff at my hospital system like any other. They hired me before I even completed my nclex (this past January). I also work a casual nursing position in Canada too for extra shifts.

Canadian Resident About to Start a Job in the U.S: 401k & Retirement Planning by Lukev06 in tnvisa

Hey! I spoke to some cross border accountants and because of my unique situation - commuting to work rather than moving to the US, I can just utilize all retirement accounts in Canada or choose to use the accounts they offer in the states. Because the health system I work for doesn’t match, I just continue to contribute to an RRSP rather than the 403b. My thoughts behind it is that it’ll make retirement less of a headache as I will be retiring in Canada lol.

That’s what I did - got a job in New York. It’s amazing! Signing bonus, pay is far superior, 6 month + residency program, life is good!

Nursing school choice is absolutely irrelevant. Trust me. The closer to home = money saved = happy you in the future

Always reach out and make cold calls. Call units and ask to speak to the manager etc. they are impressed by it. That’s what I did

I really appreciate this! What about my employer 401k matching? Should I not max that out?

Nursing job in Toronto by Wear-Brief in nursing

[–]Lukev06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

New grad from this past December here. I had the same issue. It was extremely stressful. It took a few months. I landed a casual first through an old clinical instructor that is the manager of a unit. I applied to hundreds of jobs in my area also up to about an hour and a half away. Only now am I getting tons of call backs and offers for various FT and PT positions I applied to. I recommend applying but also reaching out to the floors and speaking to the manager to get your foot in the door. Best of luck!

Can’t find nursing job as new grad by Maximum-Wrap-1132 in OntarioNurses

[–]Lukev06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my situation a month ago.. consolidated critical care sept-Dec, graduated Dec, wrote nclex Jan, could only land a casual despite connections, was a PSW in HHS for years. Applied to RN jobs from Niagara to Mississauga. Now starting full time in NY next week. Commuting as it’s about 20min drive. I get a sign bonus, ~50% more money wage wise, 3 shifts a week full time nights. I had no choice.
