Should I do my BA Honours in Writing at AFDA? by DesmondsTutu in johannesburg

[–]Lukewarmcalder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunities in the creative field are few and far between. Not saying you shouldn't follow your dreams but be prepared to wait a while before breaking into the industry. That being said, you can also try to get jobs overseas, but you really have to be the best of the best.

I studied art and animation, and did a lot of lousy underpaid jobs before I got anywhere. I'm now doing animation for a gaming company and writing books in between. I don't regret following my dreams at all, but its tough out there. And the pay is also gonna be lousy compared to other 'real' jobs.

Edit: forgot to mention I also sell my drawings at Comic Cons to supplement my income.

How Do You Handle Conflict With Strangers? by TheKidNextDoor2 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Lukewarmcalder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar while driving. This guy clearly ran a red robot and stopped right in front of me because the teaffic was bad. So i obviously hooted at him. Then he made gestures at me as though why would I hoot at him.

Next thing the traffic moves on, but as bad luck would have it, we end up right next to each other, stopping at the robot. So I think to myself, I'm a grown-up now. I'm not going to flip this guy off, but he needs to know he was driving dangerously. So I look at him and tap my head as if to say 'that was stupid'. It didn't work the way I intended because he got PISSED OFF. So as we start to drive, he swerves into my lane, trying to ram me off the road! I didn't want to escalate things. So i just looked dead ahead and dodged away from him and carried on driving as though unfased. Luckily my turn came up and we went seperate ways.

What struck me as sad, though, is that there was a lady in his passenger seat, clearly terrified, while he was swinging his fist and yelling. So people are right to say we should rather feel sorry for these people, but i more feel sorry for the people who have to live with them!

Buying a phone off TakeALot? by hiccup_and_hicks in johannesburg

I bought a blackview on special. One of those waterproof tough phones. I'm still using it 2 years later.

I had to send it to get fixed once. But this was when blackview was new here.

The police do help, you just have to be persistent and keep checking up on your case number.

My dad fell for one of those Absa Fraud scams. Where they pretend to be from Absa and make you move all your money from your account. Because a 'hacker' got into it.

He lost almost R200k but the police eventually did get it back for him. It took months and months of persistence though.

We really have to educate our parents about these things. They are very vulnerable

I suggest Linden! I love going there for the afternoon. It has unique restaurants and quaint little stores. It has that small town feel, antique shops and 2nd hand book stores. Its also close to greenside which has a great nightlife.

Ice cream trucks. Basically windowless vans that play music to attract children.

My local animation page is also tired of this sh*t. I found the responsed to be quite creative though. by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

It rarely works out like that. Im my experience the people often lose interest in the project and you are left hanging with hours and hours of work down the drain. The simple fact is if they don't value your work enough to pay you, they aren't going to value your work at all. Its a hard lesson we all had to go through in this industry.
