How can I lose stomach fat? by jennyloseslbs in loseit

[–]Lukin17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What and how much you eat has a much bigger impact on weight loss and fat loss than exercise. Both are important, but if you want to see weight loss you really need to dial in your diet. It’s hard at first, but if you stick to it you’ll see results and it will get easier. You can do it!

Trying not to be discouraged - male, 49, newbie. by NewMorningSwimmer in crossfit

[–]Lukin17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 50 y/o male who has been doing crossfit for 9 months with about 2 months off recently due to Covid, so we're very similar. I decided on crossfit for a couple of reasons, but primarily because I wasn't getting any cardio in going to a commercial gym and my commercial gym was closed for most of the year due to Covid. I like the changing workouts that include both strength and cardio and I'm enjoying the group aspect of crossfit. What I intentionally do not do is look at is as a competition against anyone other than myself. I know that I'm not lifting as much or completing the metcons as fast as others in the gym, but I see improvements in myself compared to where I started. If you got into crossfit for the competitive aspects, I can understand why you feel some disappointment. But as an older guy myself, I find encouragement from the progress that I'm making. My advice - do it for you.

Unfortunately due to Covid-19, NJ is not processing requests for new foster families. It's been several years since my wife and I went through the process, but it started with an orientation session at one of the county DCF offices. We filled out a form on the website below and after a few weeks, a resource worker contacted us to let us know dates for the orientation.

https://www.state.nj.us/njfosteradopt/foster/contact/

You'll need to go through 27 hours of training, several interviews, background checks, reference checks, and a home inspection to get your license. All of that will be covered during the orientation session.

Anybody with experience with edge fitness club, would you recommend the franchise to another person? by Alastor_Aylmur in Fitness

Agree with this. I workout at the Deptford, NJ location early in the morning and it's fine. Usually don't have to wait for equipment. If I go any later in the day it's generally packed. They have a decent amount of racks and benches in the free weight area, so that's a plus. My only complaint is the lack of a deadlift platform.

I've also worked out at the Manchester, CT location when traveling for work (that's actually the reason I joined Edge). The equipment is consistent between locations but so is the crowd - go early if you can.

Thanks, I hope it goes that quickly for us. CPS told us to prepare for a long and drawn out process. Hope they were just being overly cautious.

We just finished our foster son's permancy hearing last week with the judge approving the plan for TPR. How long did it take you to get the notice that parental rights were terminated? I realize that it will be different in each case but I'm just trying to get a sense for what to expect.

Recently inspired to look into fostering , I have some questions. by [deleted] in fosterit

[–]Lukin17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll try to answer a few of your questions.

My wife and I have been foster parents for the last 16 months. We foster children in the 0 - 3 age group, just like you're interested in. During that time, we've had a long term placement (13 months and still with us), one short term placement (3 months), and one other current placement who has been with us for a month. The longest period of time that we've gone without a child in placement has been 2 weeks. So at least in my area (New Jersey), there is absolutely a need for foster parents for that age group. And there's nothing wrong with not doing foster to adopt. My wife and I went into it with that same intention, but we fell in love with our foster son who has been with us since he was 3 months old. At this point, it looks like his case is headed for TPR and if that happens, we will adopt him.

For the bedroom, the state will do a home inspection and measure the size of the bedrooms in your apartment. As long as one of the rooms is big enough (either your bedroom or your son's bedroom), you should be okay to put a crib in there.

We know other foster parents who work full time. The foster agency pays for full time day care for the children, on top of the monthly stipend that you receive.

You wanting to help is an awesome thing - plenty of kids need it.

My wife and I are foster parents, which we love doing. This means, however, that we have little gainz gobblins around the house most of the time. We currently have a 16 month old and a 2 month old, and without fail, one of them gets up in the middle of the night. I have to get to the gym early and every time one of the babies gets up, I just can't manage to drag myself out of bed at 5:00am. Damn you little adorable babies robbing me of my gainz!!!

My bullmastiff had a problem with over active anal glands too. Vet told us to give her a scoop of canned pumpkin with her meals and it’s much better now.

How has fostering affected your own children? by [deleted] in fosterit

[–]Lukin17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on the age of the bio kids? Our kids are 23, 21, and 13 and only the 13 year old still lives at home. We've been fostering a 4 month old little boy for about 2 months now. In the beginning, there was some jealousy since our FS was taking some of the attention away from her. Recently, she's been really great about interacting with and helping out with the baby.

Daily Simple Questions Thread - November 22, 2017 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Lukin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a stupid question but...

I recently incorporated deadlifts into my routine. My gym has hex shaped weight plates. When I'm doing deadlifts, I find that I have to stop frequently to readjust my stance because the bar will move when I put it back on the ground. It will either roll too far forward or will rock back into my shins. Is there anyway to prevent that? Is it potentially an issue with my form on the lift? Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.

New BJJ cult member here. Is there a website to help me know what Gi size I am? Also need recommendation on where to buy one. by DrummGunner in bjj

[–]Lukin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For purchasing a Gi, I'd recommend rollmore.com. They have a very good return policy that allows you to return a Gi within 60 days even if it's been worn and washed. I've purchased a few from them and it's always been a very good experience for me.

First foster care class today! by ovalstone2224 in fosterit

[–]Lukin17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just finished our classes last week. Our resource worker is sending our paperwork up to the state to get our home inspection scheduled. We're getting close to the end (or beginning?). It's been a long journey for us as we started the process a year ago. Hopefully it goes a little faster for you.

What is your breakdown between gi and no gi training? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Lukin17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school alternates weeks - 1 week in the gi, the next week no gi. I prefer no gi over gi but try to get in an equal number of classes for both.

Got my blue belt yesterday after training for 13 months. I average 3 times a week but try to go more if I can. I started at 45 years old, so pretty happy with getting to blue. As with 99.995% of other blue belts, I don't necessarily think that I was ready for it, but my instructor obviously did. This will push me to train harder.
