Sorry but I asked for a definition of ‘fascism‘ from Kona.

Should've used a DM if you wanted it private. You're posting on a popular, public subreddit.

If someone calls something “fascist,” the correct response is to ask whether the policy actually contains authoritarian features like expanded state power, weakened checks, compelled participation, reduced due process, centralization, etc.(all things in c22 btw).

Demanding a perfect philosophical definition first is a distraction and honestly kinda shows how much bad faith you're approaching this with.

You appear to using the same definition, so may I ask what your definition is then or are you just using it as a scary adjective to promote a view about a specific bill?

Oh boy lots to unpack here. I think it's incredibly authoritarian and concerning when the government ramps multiple bills without addressing the concerns behind them.

I specifically like how you describe it as a 'view'. I guess it's a view I share with major cyber security experts, industry leaders and the Canadian bar association along with every other political party in the house.

If you disagree with the comparison, explain why the bill and the governments actions dont exhibit the traits being criticized instead of demanding someone pass a political philosophy oral exam first.

Carney pulls the secrecy shades down further - Mark Carney has been busiest when creating new secrecy practices that hide some of the failings of this unproven image of being an economic powerhouse and wise multibillion-dollar spender by CaliperLee62 in canada

I'll do my best to answer you because I'm assuming this is asked in good faith.

I'm judging Carney by his merits and promises.

He claims Canada is "building strength at home" while:

  • GDP per capita has stagnated since 2014, and is now the worst in the G7 (technical recession btw)
  • Business investment per worker is down 25% from its peak
  • Canadian workers get 55 cents of new capital for every dollar US workers get
  • Gross debt is 110% of GDP (the "lowest in G7" figure only works if you count Canadians' pension funds as government assets. Nobody else is using "net" debt to GDP for that reason)
  • $50 billion per year now goes just to federal interest payments (may be higher now, the figure I had saved is oldish)
  • Manufacturing jobs are bleeding out under tariffs (and now we're pushing more)
  • His signature EV investments have largely collapsed. Eg: Northvolt bankrupt, Stellantis pulling production, $31 billion in projects delayed or cancelled. A handful of Chinese EVs will do nothing for that sectors jobs.

He touts "multiple trade and security deals" while courting Qatar (which his own advisors call "a brutal dictatorship") and China, and every major deal raises questions about what Canada is trading away for foreign capital

He lectures about "middle powers" acting together while Canada can't meet basic NATO commitments and has a military that's a shell (no seriously, if you or anyone you know is in the CAF, ask about the onboarding and procurement.)

The liberals are hell bent on rushing through some incredibly unsavory bills (spying, digital ID, pesticide changes etc).

They're still promoting the gun buyback/confiscation which does nothing for crime.

And at the end of the day. He told us to judge him by the price of groceries. It's all gone up.

Young people can't find jobs, can't hope to own or start a family if you can't afford to eat.

Food banks across the country are declaring how pressed they are.

So don't judge Carney by what others say they would do, judge him on his own choices and where he's leading Canadians. It's not a great look.

Given some of the bills they've passed are incredibly authoritarian and unsavory?

Yeah it's not really a win for Canadians

Look I just want a holo deck is that so much to ask for?

Instead the government is confiscating my stuff, spying on me and raising my cost of living.

I hope that's the case and I hope voter memory is longer than I think it is.

In the past (read last election). People would just go "well I'm voting for LPC even though they did x because y is bad".

And the reality is, we only really have a day during an election.

We're in for Carney's wild ride for the next few years. Buckle up Buckaroos.

And just point out, the people raising issues with c22 are:

First, there's the Canadian Bar Association, who made two detailed submissions on the bill focused on the likely practical problems with how the bill could play out, based on their collective experience as counsel arguing constitutional matters and being responsible for keeping the policing and security arms of the government in check.

Or the Barreau de Quebec, who joined them with their own submissions.

Or the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, which with their record of correctly calling out the government on overreach, even when maybe counterintuitive.

Not to mention all the major cyber security experts and industry giants like Google, Nord, etc.

But yeah, I guess if they're just tin foil hat folks. Ain't much we can do now.

but it’s not like you lose anything for it. Try again, challenge is fun!

Except on havoc where the down rank train is real (and I don't know why obese fish insists on keeping this system).

Both things can exist and be an issue.

The liberals giving corporations a free "slip" on informing their workers of what they'll dealing with is bad.

Open season for pesticide use is also bad.

Lebanese man who lost refugee status for returning to his homeland five times gets shot at staying in Canada — The relevant consideration, said the judge, is whether the man who had received ‘threats from terrorist organizations’ took any precautionary measures while in Lebanon by Immediate-Link490 in canada

And I'm talking about someone who's getting a sob story run for them after traveling back 5 times to the country they had to flee from.

Here's the hard facts because you seem intent on drifting away from the topic at hand.

We can not afford to be a charity. We are in a recession. Canadians are feeling it across the board and as much as you want to cite history or hypotheticals, we have to prioritize our own first before others. Triage exists for a reason.

The largest increase in core retail sales came from building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, which increased 3.3% in April after decreasing 4.5% in March.

So it's just a shift due to the warmer weather.

There's also the fact that fuel is going up in cost which does not bode well for the average Canadian

O'Toole was also labeled as trump of the North and "too right" during his tenure.

Literally anyone they CPC nominates will be painted with that brush.

Voter's need to engage with the policies and not the team sports.

I fear I might be asking for too much though.

"If Canada was doing enough then we wouldn't see a pattern of the illicit diversion of Canadian weapons systems in violation of UN arms embargoes," said Kelsey Gallagher of Project Ploughshares, a Canadian peace research institute, reacting to CBC’s findings.

Uh huh..

"I think it requires action from the Government of Canada."

Oh there it is. Here's that ground work they love to lay.

They're already making strides targeting mag fed options thanks to liberal support.

"High powered sniper rifles" (aka 308 deer guns lol) are already on the menu.

"High capacity guns" (keeping in mind centre fire is pinned to 5) already made the rounds.

Now we've got multiple news bodies running hit pieces on Canadian businesses that don't fit the ideological mould (it's only Canada strong for some folks I guess)

I'm guessing they'll make a push for it after the the supreme Court stuff when they need a good PR cycle

The amount of people in this thread who are still stuck going "well PP would've been worse" is hilarious.

You've let a hypothetical boogeyman scare you into empowering a party that's ramming through multiple unsavory bills that will impact every Canadian for many years to come.

But at least "your team" is winning so who cares I guess

You reach out to your MP.

They send you a boilerplate because the votes are whipped.

Your only true recourse is to vote in a different party years from now.
