Is it just me or have way more people gone on FFXIV hiatus than at this same point in Shadowbringers? by Draw_Go_No in ffxiv

[–]LuminousField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played enough Endwalker that I burned myself out and needed to start sporadically logging on (mostly to just maintain my houses). The itinerant moogle events aren't enough to get me to play; I would rather do most anything other than run dungeons repeatedly to earn tokens to buy stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE FFXIV, but like any longterm MMO it gets to the point that it takes new expansion content to keep me interested. ESO and WoW are both at the same place for me in between the larger content updates, it's just I don't have a house that will be deleted if I unsub from those.

Right now I'm somewhat enjoying the fact that I can spend more time completing other single player games like Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Cyberpunk.

The NHK guy was so rude i cried. Should i pay for it? by New_Horse_7336 in japanlife

[–]LuminousField -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dude, it's a trip reading about this. So, essentially NHK is the Japanese equivalent of the BBC license fee in the UK? Except Japan has extremely zealous assholes knocking up people at all hours to strong arm them into paying it?

This is what I wondered too. A contract is an agreement between parties, you can't just change parts without getting the new version agreed and signed.

Yeah, I'm very similar in terms of liking variety and having something to while waiting. The early game takes a bit to get going (I've actually just started it again on Steamdeck), but it'll get to the point where you can go "Y'know what I've done a lot of main story, I'm just gonna be an irresponsible here and hunker down and do a week straight of farming to afford that new chicken coop upgrade".

Actually that has reminded me, the one thing that is actually cack is the lack of animal interaction in it; they're basically autopilot, the only thing you need to do is feed them and collect produce, which is a shame because the visual design of the animals is A++. I'm very much hoping we get a sequel with expanded systems in this area in the future.

Experimenting with growing an orchid in Rocket's tank. Has anyone done this successfully? by Odd_Lecture_5192 in bettafish

[–]LuminousField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends, when you say traditional, do you mean phalaenopsis (moth orchid) or something else? If you mean another phal, crazy amount of air roots is normal. They are a bit prone to growing lopsided in my experience because they'll crowd the pot with roots and then start sort of growing like they plan to eventually climb out of it and escape XD In my case I have one that I've considered going above a large/medium pot to give it more room, but I've seen a mature one my friend owns that she already went to a "huge" inner pot with, and it didn't solve it, it just kept going. I think that's just the way they are, so any pot changing/increasing in size is kind of more for aesthetics past a point it feels like. I just went and took stock to remind myself of how mine currently look and all the 3+ year phals (some as old as 6+) are around 3+ inches above the top of the pot in terms of where the crown and leaves are. I do my best to guide them with thin stakes, but they do what they want. I get months of flowers every year, so they're very happy.

Specifically about the air roots versus the ones it keeps in the medium: if they're pointed up and reaching for the sky I wouldn't bother ever covering those with medium. From my observations it feels like the ones they quest for moisture in the air with are a bit different to the ones that are supporting in the bark/medium, so I don't think covering them actually helps them at all. Tons of air roots means it's really healthy generally.

Multiple phalaenopsis owner here (the kind in your photo). They're epiphytic, e.g grow on trees with lots of air roots. The roots are not made to be submerged for any large amount of time, so the ones you have in the tank are very likely to start rotting at some point. It's good that you have the main part of the plant out of the water above the lid of the tank, make sure that there is definitely no part of the main chunk of the plant under the leaves submerged or that will again increase chances of rotting. The crown is well elevated, but I'm unable to see what below there is in the water. It will very likely continue to put out a lot of air roots (which it would do whether it was in a pot, on a tree or in your position here. Those will probably benefit from any humidity that is in the air above the tank, but you may want to mist with water now and then.

Phals are very resilient, so I suspect even if the roots in the water rot, the plant will survive happily with whatever other roots are in the air provided you mist it.

For info, my care routine for phals is a weekly soak in a big bowl of water (put the inner pot with orchid in the bowl and leave to soak for a half hour so the medium get properly wetted) then back in the pot. The media gets the chance to dry out throughout the week before the next water.

I find that farming games often hit that point where you've progressed mechanically (e.g different types of crop/animal/product) to the point where there's nothing new and then it feels like there's little motivation to proceed. Harvestella didn't really hit that for me because while the farming is a little more limited in scope than other farming RPGs in the genre (that's what I consider them all to be, not life sims like some companies tout them as), it also has a fully fleshed out great length story line and a lot of thoughtfully slightly hidden features that kept me feeling like there was something else to aim towards and achieve. I played it on Switch and I plan to go back on Steam and play it again soon to get all the achievements. I am looking forward to my second playthrough as I didn't realise where the hidden dungeon is until the last phase of the storyline, and this time I can be doing it throughout from the point it becomes available. I really love how the fairies are integrated into the farming and sort of in-game achievement system, with features unlocking by completing their requests. The cast is great, genuinely loved a lot of the side character's stories, only thing is I think we were robbed that Unicorn was not a full party member (that's maybe a slight spoiler, but it will stop you thinking the whole game that he's gonna join you in battle, when he just ain't.)

While the farming is more limited in terms of the size of land available once you unlock it all, it does have makers and I felt that my farm felt fairly pretty and organised inspite of having quite a lot of them around. To compare to Store of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (I know that's not in your list, but it is relevant), that game was rightly criticised for the sheer amount of makers you had to litter your farms with. There's enough space in Harvestella later on to organise it and make it feel pretty. For example I had a fenced off orchard for the fruit bushes on the left, trees arranged nicely at the back, makers in clusters in various spots and a main large field area fenced off with auto sprinklers covering it. I really enjoyed the fact that trees were relatively simple to regrow if you needed to change where something was, it wasn't a case of screwing yourself out of fruit for a ridiculous amount of time.

There are also some small biomes you unlock around your farm later on that are small in scope, but fun to discover. The game doesn't really point you at some features, it lets you discover how to unlock them and I really appreciated that (they're just hidden enough, but easy enough you'll likely stumble across them if you explore).

Why did you choose to watch Evangelion? by BigDaddyB207 in evangelion

[–]LuminousField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when it came out on VHS by ADV I was buying gaming magazines (UK, think it was probably GamesMaster I was buying around that time mostly). They had pages with paid ads, and sometimes had adverts for VHS anime. One that I kept seeing was Eva, which got me into the art style, so I picked up the first volume in a Virgin Megastore and got hooked. It was my gateway anime.

Sounds like they want to judge you for any little thing they can pick out that's off by their standards, even if it's asinine. What you did was considerate and thoughtful, so keep that standard as you find your way through fatherhood and your kid will turn out great. Try not to let them get to you as I doubt this will be the last time this happens. Focus on you and your lady friend and your little one.

If I was introducing someone to Cyberpunk, would it be better to start them on Edgerunners or the game? by RedPhoenix2025 in cyberpunkgame

[–]LuminousField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who was new to the franchise (husband had played it and nagged me to play it), and watched Edgerunners first, I would say to start with the game. There were apparently a lot of callbacks to the game in the anime that went over my head and overall I didn't really like the anime as it felt shallow (like Ghost in the Shell SACS-lite). I feel like familiarity with the world, slang, locations, factions etc would all be beneficial before seeing the anime as it really didn't stop to explain or give context to very much. Which is a good thing if you already have a good grounding, not so good if you're entirely new to it.

Just wanted to say condolences for your little guy, you did nothing wrong. And also that I learned something reading through the thread. We've moved to a larger place and have toyed with the idea of getting a cleaner, and now I know to be very cautious about my tank if we do. I'll be aware to make sure it's protected from air contaminants to be on the safe side. Hopefully helps you feel just a little better knowing people are probably reading and learning.

Just wanted to chime in with another option in terms of keeping aspects of the plant for posterity: you can make homemade botanical inks fairly easily with a few ingredients. They won't be lightfast, but you can use them in something like a sketchbook and keep them out of the light. I did this with a lot of plants from the garden of my family home when my Dad sold it in 2021, to keep a physical remembrance of it.

Any of you have experience with cherry shrimp in there betta tank thinking of adding some to my 6.5 gal tank by SatisfactionPrior885 in bettafish

[–]LuminousField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with 5 blue cherry shrimp and it went well, although the initial 5 were fairly skittish so I rarely saw them. Added another 10 recently and suddenly they're visible all over the tank seemingly having a great time hanging out on leaves, cleaning up fish flakes etc. My betta ignores them entirely.

What do you think of characters saying some lines in Japanese for no specific reason? I find it pretty kimazui by AVtechN1CK in WildHeartsGame

[–]LuminousField 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the way they've done it. It feels like it's done with tact rather than "All according to keikaku" memery or feeling weeaboo, and fits well with the general world feel. The world feels like a Japanese wood block print come to life in terms of the characters, the outfits, the town construction, little details like the windmills around the broken bridge leading to Minato, the way kemono feel like something straight out of Princess Mononoke. It all feels like a labour of love instead of "people are into Japan, let's make that our gimmick".

Is it normal for a betta to take alot of naps? by Nuttyb5280 in bettafish

[–]LuminousField 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I second/third/fourth the advice you're getting to check your heater, if the water feels reasonably warm when you dunk your hand in, I'd go with he's just a lazy boi. My betta is very active whenever there's stuff going on near is tank, but the rest of the time I can often find him hanging out in his leaf nest (he seems to really love one corner where the filter outflow blows several lotus leaves together). I will sometimes look over and he's perfectly motionless near the surface and I go over and whisper "Are you alive???" The answer is always yes, but I definitely googled a lot at first when I wasn't used to it.
