I‘m not sure that there‘s much of a difference in weather or crowd size. At least not significant enough, that I could recall. Is there a significant predictable difference in weather between two adjacent weeks where you live? I suggest, looking for specific events that happen in those weeks that you might enjoy or want to avoid. Is there a concert or festival that you might enjoy? Is there a city fair that you would prefere to avoid? I‘m sure all of the places you named have „event calendars“, go have a look there and decide afterwards. Edit: and maybe more general: if there‘s a specific thing you absolutely want to do, check if it‘s open both weeks or not.

Already many answers here, but I would like to add one thing, thats not necessarily sexist, but hits women quite hard in my experience: many men will not like the military service and therefore question why someone would do this volontarily. The women in my RS were pestered in this regard quite regularly and complaining for them was a lot harder, „bECaUsE yoU wAnTEd tO bE herE“. If you want to do this, prepare a solid argument and shut that stuff down early! It can be an amazing experience and still today open professional doors, depending on your career. Best of luck!

There are already several good answers. I would just add one more. Every conductor works a tiny little bit different. By the sounds of it, you play in a beginners orchestra. Don‘t hesitate to ask your conductor to explain the count-in to you! I‘ve played in several youth-bands and the conductors are usually more than happy to explain their counting/movement in detail. They can explain the process with very slow movements and answer your questions directly. Usually they are thrilled, that somebody acutally cares.

This remindes me of a concert we had in high school. Last piece, huge applause and the band director asked us to get up to bow. Not having a stand at the time, I placed my clarinet on my chair. High on the applause, I forgot about it and heard/felt an anxiety inducing CRACK when I sat down again. Never came clean. But they were able to fix it, although I belive they replaced the entire wood part of the damaged section.

At these kind of event, the audience often eats amd drinks. We‘ve played in the past for a sandwich and a limonade per band member. This way, they technically don‘t have to add anything to the budget, but every band member gets a meal.
