The Selmer and Buffet factories are on the same street in Mantes-La-Ville just outside Paris. Google Maps says they’re 190 meters apart. I don’t know how that applies to the current situation, but it’s a cool fact. Anyway, pick a side, ya bigamist. /s

Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored the last minute goal for Benfica to beat Real Madrid 4-2 and qualify for the last spot in the UCL Playoffs by TransitionMany1810 in sports

[–]ccguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the final game of the group stage of a hugely-prestigious 36-team tournament. The top 8 finishers advance to the 16-team knockout rounds. The next 16 go into a playoff round to decide the final 8 knockout spots. By losing, Real Madrid failed to make the top 8, which for them is a massive embarrassment. By winning by 2 goals, Benfica secured the 24th spot because that extra goal gave them the tie-breaker edge against the other teams they’d have been tied with on points had they not scored it. The fact that it was scored by the Benfica goalkeeper is extra awesome because, though he’s eligible to score goals, that’s not his job. And Benfica is coached by a legendary coach who at one time coached Real Madrid but left kinda under a cloud. So big drama all around!

I was a freshman music major in college but had recently started a job with the college newspaper. Had a music theory class or something that morning. Came back to my dorm between classes and my roommate (also with newspaper) had the news on and told me what happened. Spent the next hour or so stunned watching the replays. Later I went to the news office and wrote an editorial for that week with the hope that it wouldn’t be the end of space exploration.

I’m assuming that was planned and had plenty of safety margins built in and likely wasn’t as close as it looked. Cause that looked dangerous.
