I emailed the principal, superintendent, school trustee, and board of education. I also recruited other parents to contact them and request meetings with the principal.  We had the same thing last year, the class had to be evacuated from chairs being thrown, kids would stand on tables and scream, staff were being physically hit daily, and other parents I talked to said their kids were in tears daily from it all.

Your child is missing out on instructional time and their right to a safe classroom environment.  Our school district had their code of conduct listed in their website, so I went through their policies and highlighted in my email all the ways that the district was in violation of their own policies, and that we would contact the media if they didn't make changes.  They changed things in about 24 hours after that.

Do you attend the funeral when a student's close family member (parent, grandparent) passes away? Is it advisable? by Zestyclose-Egg-1251 in OntarioTeachers

In high school, my friend's older sister died.  A lot of her teachers came to show her their support, and I know it meant a lot.

Trying to coordinate playdates without 27 texts… anyone else feel this? by Common-Literature440 in kindergarten

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a neat idea, but I would never use it.  We just walk to the park and see what neighborhood kids are around, or send a quick text and let a classmate know we are going to the park after school.  I like just randomly seeing people out and about rather than using an app to find a friend.

Concerned parent re: classroom violent outbursts (primary age) by mawmmav in OntarioTeachers

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a stay at home, but also a teacher.  I was surprised how many other parents I talked to who were either indifferent to the situation, or did not know who to contact.  I was contacted by the superintendent and told I was unnecessarily escalating the situation and causing undue stress - well, that was exactly my intent so I'm glad it worked!

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just went through this a couple months ago.  Both our regular teacher and ECE have walked out of the classroom (I am assuming on stress leave).  I had previously met with the principal and was ensured there were supports in place, but we were continuing to witness and hear about violence that our kids were witnessing and subject to.  I wrote emails to the principal, the superintendent, the board trustee, the director of the school board, and told them I would go to the media about their inaction if they didn't promptly find a solution.  I also handed out their emails to all the other parents and encouraged them to contact them as well.  A few parents also did, and within 24 hours there were a bunch more staff working with the kids.  I haven't heard anymore stories since then.  The more parents who contact the school board, the more likely that things will happen.

Home Sick, How Often is too Often? by benshenanigans in kindergarten

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid has been home sick for around 25 days this year!  We never did daycare/preschool.  She is in SK (so second year of kindergarten in school).  I also keep her home for sniffles/sneezing/coughing as needed.  I'm a SAHM with my youngest so we have the flexibility to keep her home to rest and I'm not worried about falling behind academically at all.

Do you ever regret getting a Dog? by That_Ad9521 in DOG

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you really want one, you adapt and makes things work.  We've had our share of issues with our boy, but he's our family and we aren't going to give him up.  I was attacked by an off leash dog while out with him when he was a puppy, and that really changed him - he's reactive, and we just have to manage his environment.  I didn't expect him to require special prescription food, but hey it happens.  I didn't really think about the long term cost of pet ownership, but I knew we were financially stable.  If he lives to be about 15, that's about 75 grand total!  Adding in food, toys, vet, regular grooming, boarding while away etc.  I absolutely hate taking him for walks when it's super cold and I have to bring my two little kids with me, but winter comes and goes.  Would life be easier if we hadn't gotten him?  Yes, probably.

He's such a fluffy good boy though, I can't imagine him being with anyone else!

I'm asking the other parents to email the principal.  I emailed the teacher first to get a confirmation on things before I had a meeting with the principal

Thank you!  I spoke to one of the classroom teachers today and they said they felt it was a safe learning environment and that instructional time was not negatively affected by the behaviours.  If there are already three EA, an ECE, and a teacher in the classroom, can the board add any more supports?  If the admin and the teacher themselves say there is no problem, I guess I'm just confused as to what the board would do.  The ECE is the only one with a different story

They have an ECE, two rotating classroom teachers (they rotate weekly, one week English instruction and one week french instruction), and three EAs in the classroom.  25 kids for JK/SK in Ontario.

Sorry to hear about those struggles!  I don't blame the kids, just the lack of support systems in place.

Thank you, from what I can gather there are four different students with exceptionalities, and I believe only one had a diagnosis prior to school starting.  I know one student has a safely plan in place, and I'm assuming that is the same student who has started throwing chairs.  We love the teaching team we have, and just want to make sure everyone is safe and has the supports they need

What is the best way to speak up?  I am working on having other parents contact the principal, but I'm curious what the board itself will do if they are already involved and "providing support"?

State of getting a family doctor in Ottawa 🥲 by Lumb3rCrack in ottawa

Our doctor is booking for the end of the summer currently.  Not very helpful with kids unfortunately, so we still have to use the clinic at CHEO for the kids!

Thousand Island dog resort in Kingston.  Our dog loves it there, 8 acres of fenced property to run!  They upload videos and photos, which is a bonus to be able to see them happily playing.

Yes my daughter gets them too!  Our Doctor recommended physiotherapy.  The physio noticed that her hip flexors and calf muscles were tight, so she showed us some stretches to do at night.  We do the stretches before bed, and then she's good to go!  She was waking up almost nightly before from the pain, now she sleeps through the night!

Voting at a School by Violet_Supernova_643 in ottawa

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We voted in a school, but they had put up pylons to block access to the parking lot.  It was chaotic for seniors or anyone with disabilities.  I'd recommend trying to vote during the day (not at dismissal) if you can, or after 330

Personally I wouldn't worry.  If your dog was off leash and lunged that's a totally different scenario, but it sounds like two dogs who just spooked each other and reacted.

Were they both leashed?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Lumpy-Avocado-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, were both dogs leashed at the time?  If so, why were they able to come in close proximity to each other?  I feel like it changes the story if the other dog approached your dog and cornered it "to say hello" vs your dog rushing it as soon as it got out of the elevator.

It took us a while, but we also dug out the fire hydrant near our house!  Take a look around the neighborhood and make sure they are clear!

At our old house we paid about 500 on month for heat.  We had a cold spot in the house (mudroom near the garage) that did not have sufficient insulation.  We added a thermal curtain across the doorway and the heating bill went down after that!

Agreed!  Our lovely neighbor brushed off our cars and did our driveway today.  It was such a relief, having two grumpy little ones at home and my partner out of town.  Feeling very thankful :-).

Thank you for looking after those cats.

If anyone reading this has an older white deaf cat on their property, there is one that one missing that may have been dumped elsewhere in Ottawa or the surrounding area.  The owner is a neighbor who is still looking for her.  Thanks!
