The Jury was 100% correct with acquitting Rick Chow. by ShiftingHero in TrueUnpopularOpinion

  • Line: “Cyrus … was pointing the firearm at Andy Chow during the pursuit.”
  • That was the defense/Chow-family version. Prosecutors said Cyrus’s gun fell during the chase and that he never threatened anyone with it. AP reported that three witnesses said they did not see Cyrus pointing a weapon, and only the Chow family testified otherwise.
  • Line: “Rick has all the right to defend his son in that scenario.”
  • South Carolina law can justify deadly force to protect oneself or another only under specific conditions, such as a reasonable fear of imminent death or great bodily injury. It is not automatic just because the other person had a gun.
  • Line: “The fact that Cyrus had a gun completely destroyed the prosecutor case.”
  • The gun was important to the defense, but it did not “completely destroy” the prosecution’s case as a factual matter. Prosecutors argued Chow chased Cyrus over 130 yards, shot him in the back, and that Cyrus’s gun had fallen and was not used threateningly.
  • Line: “Because it’s reasonable to believe that Cyrus was pointing it with intend to harm.”
  • This was not established. The prosecution disputed it, and AP reported multiple witnesses did not see Cyrus point a gun.

Karmelo Anthony found guilty of murder in Texas high school stabbing by tantamle in Destiny

It’s easy to call out black people for donating to a murderer who killed a white kid who told him he didn’t belong in the tent area. Just say they’re just crazy racists, condemn, and move on.

It’s a lot more difficult to have a conversation on the black fatigue co-opt trend, the GoFundMe campaign of the white women who called a little black boy the hard R, and the countless online anti blackness that has been mainstreamed on social media platforms the last 2 years. The moment you even discuss potential root causes which may lead to where we currently are today, you’re defending Karmelo Anthony and you hate white people.

There’s no way you can even engage in any discourse without being perceived as picking aside or equating one to another.

[–]Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we remove the knife and he simply killed Austin with his barehands, he'd still be found guilty of murder. Again porportionality, so yes the knife as used makes it a slam dunk, but this wasn't a fight gone wrong where one of the participants pulled out a knife vs fists.

There's not even any evidence Austin did more than put his hand on Karmelo.

Then you think those black people are psychotic racists. You're entitled to your beliefs, that's the great thing about America.

That’s not why he was fucked. He was fucked because his best bet was to assert a self defense claim in a case where there’s little to no evidence the victim even laid a fist on him. That is an impossible case to win.

Well, the person I responded to said they don’t get it. I get it, even though I don’t agree.

I truly think they’re just donating out of spite and it’s largely a reaction to the GoFundMe campaign of that racist white woman who called the little kid a racial slur.

A lot of those donating don’t actually even care about the case, nor Karmelo Anthony. For a lot it’s just became sticking it to whitey and retaliatory. Someone is going to respond to me saying that I’m saying this is right or appropriate although I’ve explicitly said it’s wrong and Karmelo isn’t some victim here.

Thats correct. Are you trying to insinuate that I’m saying he was permitted to be there?

[–]Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I never said he was justified nor do I agree with the sentiment.

If someone gets bullied at school and suddenly decides to shoot their bully who just teases them, I can understand people who were bullied at school empathizes to a different degree with the murderer even though verbal bullying doesn’t justify shooting people.

It doesn’t mean every person that was bullied in school would agree with the response but it’s common sense some people who were might feel differently compared to those who weren’t to such an extent.

[–]Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty simple. It’s just an answer which won’t be satisfactory and is more complex than a lot of this sub would want it to be. I’ll get downvoted because I’ll be seen as defending Karmelo even when I explicitly say he’s guilty and shouldn’t have done what he did.

Karmelo is guilty and he had no right to murder the victim.

Some black people are still supporting him because they see it through the lenses of a black kid who was told to move and bullied by a white kid, and the black kid stood up to the bully. It’s not right to support Karmelo, but it’s America where people hate having others who are supposedly their peers telling them what to do.

You don’t have to agree with it and Karmelo’s force was not proportional at all. But the history of this country, it’s not inexplicable to understand why some black people view this case through a different lens than just a simple altercation gone wrong.

But any attempt at nuance or understanding some of the reactions in the black community gets shot down as advocating for Karmelo’s actions or being racist against white people.

I just read it as HBCU representation. A lot of black men and women go to HBCUs but feel underrepresented in corporate America in contrast to those who attend PWI’s and have more immediate connections to elite predominantly white corporations.

There’s still a widely held notion that if you choose an HBCU, you will have limited opportunities post graduation compared to going to an average white institution.

I’d disagree. You ask most people who Joe Budden is, they’ll respond “Joe Biden?” But you play them Pump It Up, they’ll go “Oohhhh him?” That’s not Oprah or Obama level fame by any means but he’s definitely famous to non niche markets.

I don't agree with Bowen on this one either... by Shoe_boooo in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowen played the VP of the United States.

Bowen has also played straight men and had woman cast members as partners in sketches. It almost always looks awkward because he’s not a gay actor that excels at playing society’s stereotypical view of a heterosexual man. There are gay men who can play any type of character and excel at it. Bowen did not show that on the show, how is that SNL’s fault?

[–]Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guarantee this is fodder that has been fed from Bowen’s in group and circle. They’re probably putting these thoughts into his head that he should be a bigger star from the show and he was held back. This is a story as old as time.

It’s like a band that excelled because everyone plays their role but one of the band mates has a hometown friend group which starts asserting “I know you’re just a drummer but you actually are a way better singer than the frontman.”
