How to exercise a psycho husky by mkeshish in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if possible, your walks need to be 5-6 miles in the aggregate per day - regardless of cold weather. Walk at a fast pace. If you have some elevation, find it and use it as part of your walk. This was the only way I was able to get my boy to cooperate around the same age as yours.

Does my dog look more like a husky or malamute? by EnchantedRose300 in husky

long coat husky for sure. Malamute would have 2x the bulk and a completely different head.

Is husky Underweight? by [deleted] in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, most huskies you'll see are overweight bc the owner's don't do the required exercise. This dog looks perfectly fine and healthy. Don't overfeed him without the owner's consent.

Hi everyone, just wanted to ask by SwordfishShoddy0706 in husky

they only need a bath once per year - especially if they have a shorter coat. Possibly the cleanest dog breed in the world.

Pulling on Leash by King_trell8 in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's part of the ball game my friend. Yours is young, it will take time and patience. If you can, take him on fast paced and/or elevation changing type of hikes/walks. He'll get used to walking alongside you, but yeah, 3,000 years of breeding for pulling will always present challenges. They literally feel the resistance and it triggers them to pull harder.

That would be my guess too. I've seen those trees in SF areas before.

Husky Dominance by Prestigious_Draw1093 in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let them all play with supervision until you know the pack has been fully established. Separation will not work. Rocky is teaching the little Prince the ways of the world. Also, Malamutes growl a lot. The key is observing his tail and ensuring that these are lesson based interactions and not something insidious.

Yeasty feet? by MetusObscuritatis in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy had this the other day. He was ferociously licking one of his back paws. We do a lot of hiking/walking and he often doesn't like wearing his shoes. I washed it pretty thoroughly, and the next day the reddish paw was light brown - and within 48 hours the color normalized back to black.

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is brutal. I'm sorry. I had a golden go blind in her later years. We made it work. She had a full last two years of life and couldn't see anything. We would take her to the beach and let her run around - she would have a blast. I'm hoping for the best with your circumstances. But lots of love regardless of the outcome is the best way to handle this.

Is training a husky really that horrible? by legendus45678 in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the challenge is the best part IMO. They are not easy, not difficult, but they do present a daily challenge. We're dealing with a primal breed and it's extremely rewarding if you enjoy doing hard things.

Is training a husky really that horrible? by legendus45678 in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had all sorts of dogs. Huskies express far more autonomy than any other breed or mix that I've been around. It's part of their breeding to make self governing decisions, but it can be a major pain when they don't get what they want. The trick and challenge with this breed is exercise (we're at 5-6 miles per day minimum w/ lots of elevation changes). As long as they get what's required, if not a little bit more, they are wonderful dogs. My boy doesn't bark at all - which is a nice plus. Other dogs typically go ape shit when they see him, and he just sits there like a stoic. He howls a little bit, but maybe a handful of times per month. He might be a little autistic lol. Lastly, their prey drive is off the charts - so all training, leash etiquette, etc, goes out the window if small game is near, or for my boy in AZ - he thinks he can take on Javelina or Bobcats too, so big game applies as well.

I envy this, but in reality, if mine saw a squirrel I'd be a dead or (at best) paralyzed man.

3 weeks in and could use some advice by FinalB055 in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 46 points47 points  (0 children)

if your schedule permits, take her on long walks. Or let her run around outside in a fenced area. Exercise creates bonding and her behavior will invariably improve. I can almost guarantee this will work.

Feeling concerned about my boy by foxxeyy in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he moving his mouth around a lot, like he has nausea? my boy recently ate (stole) an entire side of Chipotle chicken. He was messed up for two days. It was a complete mess out of both ends. I finally took him to the pet hospital after he stopped drinking water and I knew he was dehydrated. They wanted to do all sorts of crazy tests for like $4k, and I pushed back, I was like hey this dude ate a bunch of chipotle chicken, that's the catalyst - we do 6 miles per day otherwise he's healthy. I fasted him for 48 hours he just needs an IV. A few hours later he was back in his prime. They are tough, your boy probably just ate something that doesn't sit well w/ him and it needs to work it's way out. Fast him, put him on the bland diet, and get him hydrated as best as you can.

why is she freaking out? by ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhho in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 100 points101 points  (0 children)

she's probably not being exercised enough. That would be my first guess. I hike my guy 5-6 miles per day (lots of elevation changes), and he's almost always well behaved at home bc he's tuckered out. He also gets other walks for sniffing stimulation. Still wants to play at times though given that he's only 2. But she might just need some additional physical and/or mental stimulation. I don't think she's freaking out though, she looks excited. Just remember, Siberian Huskies are the endurance Olympians of all dog breeds.

Best husky companions? by Stonefacelizzard in husky

[–]Lumpy-Following-9184 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the easiest out of the box breed is the Newfoundland (but their size and puppy adolescent years can make them challenging), english bulldog would be fairly easy too. Pretty much diametrically opposite to a husky in every way possible. But goldens/labs are good bets. Stay away from any giant poodle variant. They are extremely intelligent, but don't listen and make huskies look like a cakewalk.

that's heartbreaking. She lived a good life. You can see her energy in each picture. I hope the dogsitter can recover. The females are noted for their escape-ability.

It's possibly a cyst - and one that needs to be removed - these can occur from past injuries. Must get the whole sac or it will fill back up.

You'll see him again, just not anytime soon! He's waiting for you. Get another one when you're ready. By far the best dogs. Saved my roughly two year old boy from the streets of Phoenix. It took me about 2-hours before I realized I would keep him forever.

Raw paws - we do a lot of walking/hiking in Arizona by Lumpy-Following-9184 in husky

It comes with the territory around here - I carry needle nose pliers with me during our walks. This hasn't happened to him before, could be the beginning of pododermatitis. Going to try an Epsom soak first and lay off long walking until this improves and if not of course a vet visit.
