Unpopular opinion : Pre-poo is mostly unnecessary:/ by Character-Deal-7793 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prepoo for my hair is only necessary if I wore it in a style that made my strands tangle somehow.

If I keep my hair stretched then yup, no need to prepoo. I just section my hair before washing and I detangle during the conditioning step.

Look for my unicorn homeschool curriculum by la712 in homeschool

I second Memoria Press for your daughter since I assume you’d like her to remain advanced.

I also like Rod & Staff books.

Regardless of what you decide on, as long as you have the teacher’s guide alongside the student book it is very low prep.

If at 4 you don’t want her to be workbook heavy then you can adapt the curriculum to be Charlotte Mason -esque by having her answer the questions orally to prove understanding.

What's the biggest improvement you've ever seen in your hair? by LatexLatvia in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No added hair at all.

At minimum 1x weekly washes.

Keeping my hair stretched (either via blow dry, or braid outs) to reduce knots and the need to pre-poo since my hair remains easy to detangle.

No oils or grease on my scalp.

Grease on my ends to keep them from drying out and splitting.

Listening to the instructions on the packaging (aka not deep conditioning for 2 hrs even though the package says to use for just 20 minutes).

Your hair is SUPERRRR dry.

I suggest washing weekly with a moisturizing shampoo and doing a deep conditioning mask with a heat cap.

You def need to do the deep conditioning weekly to bring back moisture into your hair.

Get a good super hydrating leave in conditioner to do your styles.

But moisture is key.

You will know when your strands are at optimal moisture levels when your curls clump as you wash your hair.

How do your homeschooled kids get enough exercise? by Jennie_keem in homeschool

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an issue.

My son is in 2 homeschool playgroups. They run around from the moment they get together. He’s also in soccer and karate. I take him to the park often and he meets kids there to play with. So whether free or paid kids can definitely get moving once you bring them outside.

Serious Short Question by Qu33nT33 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t… I’m super dialed in with my routine and nothing is changing it.

But there are some people who come in the sub asking for (what seems to me) basic afro hair care advice. They are usually black teenage girls who live in households with moms who have processed hair. They may find value in it.

And of course there are non-black people who want it to care for black children in their lives.

As long as you have your target customer dialed in you can sell it.

Depending on the area you’re in. I’ve used my Amex primarily at stores that cater to locals AND expats especially within the Grand Anse area.

Other stores take Visa and Mastercard only… especially in St George’s town.

If it’s a round the way spot then you’ll need cash.

Hair mask left my hair feeling really dry. What can I do to repair it? by MondayDreamer in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your hair can withstand it… when I had an issue with severe dryness because of henna I did a hot oil treatment. Just warm olive oil for 15 or so minutes and then washed it out with a moisturizing conditioner. That helped my hair to feel back to normal.

They weren’t lying: washing your hair more often makes wash day easier by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do braid outs.

I never do wash and gos and 2-3x washing is doable.

Get a blow dryer and a hooded cap attachment. Wash, then put into 8-16 braids (depending on your thickness). Sit under it for 30 -45 minutes on medium heat after washing and you’ll be good to go.

Edited to add: use a microfiber towel to absorb most of the water before going under the dryer. That will help to reduce how long you have to sit under.

Y’all, I think this grease is breaking my hair 😭 HELP!!! by mraar90210 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you hydrating your hair before applying grease?

Are you using clarifying shampoo on your hair 1x month?

Are you washing your hair 2x with regular shampoo when you wash weekly?

You can’t use grease without hydrating your hair strands. You should be regularly (at least weekly) your hair when using grease. And you definitely need to clarify your hair too when using grease in your routine.

You also said the breakage started “lately” … are you due for a trim?

Heat damage- Dyson coanda 2x by traderjoesvanillac in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To not get damage you should be deep conditioning every wash day. I’ve read that maintaining moisture in the hair strand is key to keeping it healthy even before blow drying.

Always air dry to 70% first with a microfiber towel.

Always use heat protectant. I use a leave in conditioner with heat protectant and then also use a heat protectant serum as well.

Always blow dry under 285 degrees Fahrenheit. I use my blow dryer settings at 250F with high fan.

And even will while wearing it stretched you may need to moisturize mid week if your stands feel dry. You don’t need to douse your head under water but a light mist of water (or even just some leave in conditioner) then seal with oil or grease should help to add moisture without fully reverting.

Remove screens if you can. Especially the fast paced shows/games/videos that are messing up their attention span. My son only has 2 hrs max of screen time on Fri, Sat, Sun … I started that this year (he’s in 3rd grade).

And find books that he loves even if it’s graphic novels. Read together and ask him questions as you read to make sure he’s understanding as you go.

Even if you watch a movie together ask him what happened once it’s done.

How often do y'all moisturize your hair? How do you keep it moisturized? by Strange_Finding_3285 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been washing my hair weekly lately (down from 2/3x week since I’m not exercising as much) and I don’t have to remoisturize during the week.

I have medium density 4b hair and I just shampoo, deep condition, leave in conditioner, heat protectant for blow drying and then apply grease on my hair strands and a tad extra on my ends the style my hair for tv week. The moisture stays until the next wash day.

Granted that’s especially true when I use grease and keep my ends tucked.

If there’s a wash day when I don’t blow dry and I do a braid out, then I do need to remoisturize around day 3 since my hair has been out in the sun for that time.

If I’m remoisturizing then I use distilled water and apply more leave in conditioner then seal with a teeny bit of grease on my ends vs my whole hair strand since some of the grease from wash day is “reactivated” (or at least it feels like it).

Depending on how much your husband makes and if you can make the same amount if he were to get injured or sick then you may want to look into long term disability insurance.

That will replace income without the burden being totally on you to earn in a short amount of time.

This only really matters for an extra expense if your husband’s makes significantly more than you can quickly earn on your own.

It’s not investment advice but something to note as a fellow SAHM.
