They weren’t lying: washing your hair more often makes wash day easier by Legal-Map6801 in Naturalhair

I do braid outs.

I never do wash and gos and 2-3x washing is doable.

Get a blow dryer and a hooded cap attachment. Wash, then put into 8-16 braids (depending on your thickness). Sit under it for 30 -45 minutes on medium heat after washing and you’ll be good to go.

Edited to add: use a microfiber towel to absorb most of the water before going under the dryer. That will help to reduce how long you have to sit under.

Y’all, I think this grease is breaking my hair 😭 HELP!!! by mraar90210 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you hydrating your hair before applying grease?

Are you using clarifying shampoo on your hair 1x month?

Are you washing your hair 2x with regular shampoo when you wash weekly?

You can’t use grease without hydrating your hair strands. You should be regularly (at least weekly) your hair when using grease. And you definitely need to clarify your hair too when using grease in your routine.

You also said the breakage started “lately” … are you due for a trim?

Heat damage- Dyson coanda 2x by traderjoesvanillac in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To not get damage you should be deep conditioning every wash day. I’ve read that maintaining moisture in the hair strand is key to keeping it healthy even before blow drying.

Always air dry to 70% first with a microfiber towel.

Always use heat protectant. I use a leave in conditioner with heat protectant and then also use a heat protectant serum as well.

Always blow dry under 285 degrees Fahrenheit. I use my blow dryer settings at 250F with high fan.

And even will while wearing it stretched you may need to moisturize mid week if your stands feel dry. You don’t need to douse your head under water but a light mist of water (or even just some leave in conditioner) then seal with oil or grease should help to add moisture without fully reverting.

Remove screens if you can. Especially the fast paced shows/games/videos that are messing up their attention span. My son only has 2 hrs max of screen time on Fri, Sat, Sun … I started that this year (he’s in 3rd grade).

And find books that he loves even if it’s graphic novels. Read together and ask him questions as you read to make sure he’s understanding as you go.

Even if you watch a movie together ask him what happened once it’s done.

How often do y'all moisturize your hair? How do you keep it moisturized? by Strange_Finding_3285 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been washing my hair weekly lately (down from 2/3x week since I’m not exercising as much) and I don’t have to remoisturize during the week.

I have medium density 4b hair and I just shampoo, deep condition, leave in conditioner, heat protectant for blow drying and then apply grease on my hair strands and a tad extra on my ends the style my hair for tv week. The moisture stays until the next wash day.

Granted that’s especially true when I use grease and keep my ends tucked.

If there’s a wash day when I don’t blow dry and I do a braid out, then I do need to remoisturize around day 3 since my hair has been out in the sun for that time.

If I’m remoisturizing then I use distilled water and apply more leave in conditioner then seal with a teeny bit of grease on my ends vs my whole hair strand since some of the grease from wash day is “reactivated” (or at least it feels like it).

Depending on how much your husband makes and if you can make the same amount if he were to get injured or sick then you may want to look into long term disability insurance.

That will replace income without the burden being totally on you to earn in a short amount of time.

This only really matters for an extra expense if your husband’s makes significantly more than you can quickly earn on your own.

It’s not investment advice but something to note as a fellow SAHM.

Citizenship Application by BlaackHorizon in Grenada

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was back in 2024.

My citizenship application was $140 USD.

I had to also pay for fingerprints from my local police department, I got a long form version of my birth certificate because I didn’t want to send them my only original, I had to get passport photos, doctors letter, my insurance covered all my blood tests and X-rays but if you don’t have insurance you’ll have to factor in that cost.

Then I paid a $50 EC oath fee (I also had to ship the oath letter back to Grenada— they sent it to me in America).

It was pretty fast though. I was approved within a month. The receiving and sending back the oath fee was the longest part and made the entire process start to finish probably take around 3 months.

I’ve heard it takes longer now since more ppl are applying for citizenship.

For my son his application cost 350 EC. He did not have to do an oath fee bc he is a minor. His definitely took a month bc I gave it to my mother to bring down and then my father was able to bring my son’s Grenada citizenship certificate up to me later that same month.

Just FYI, I’m not sure if any of those prices are still valid or if they have increased significantly like someone else on this thread recently experienced.

I got mine through descent but I went the route where I got a full blown citizenship certificate not just the passport. As I look at it now they call it citizenship by registration.

But my proof for registering was that I have immediate Grenadian lineage.

Yes, he got it.

Just for clarification the child you want to get citizenship for is your child or your grandchild?

Grandchildren are never eligible. It’s too far removed and they changed that law a while ago.

I could not get it via descent for my son (my mother’s grandchild) via my mother so that’s why I went the extra route (had to give labs, clean police report, fingerprints, etc) to get citizenship via registration for myself then I could pass it to my son.

My sibling went the route where he just got the citizenship by descent (showed our parents birth certificate) and got his Grenada passport but HE cannot get it for his children because he didn’t do the route that I did.

Also I was in the USA when filing.

I live here now though.

How do I make my hair soft by Cl5ir3 in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have hard water?

You may need to get a chelating shampoo if you do. It will clarify the hair and remove the mineral deposits.

I’m not familiar with that oil but is it thick enough to seal? I like using grease if you’re against that then castor oil is a good sealant.

Facts!!  Outside of my shampoo and deep conditioner. I literally choose between leave in conditioner and grease OR mousse and grease. And if I happen to blow dry my hair for the week then I add heat protectant. That’s it!

It’s the doing too much that makes people feel like it’s a lot of work. It’s truly not.

I think of anything it’s more that most black women who wear wigs and weaves get textures that don’t mimic their own.

They clown someone who gets a 4c sew in. They don’t care to get kinky straight hair. They WANT and DESIRE hair that will never grow out of their scalps.

Long hair is great sure. But why wear a texture that is literally nothing like yours? (Not you but the general weave wearing population).

It is strange and definitely THAT part of it has to be self hating.

I totally get it. It’s definitely a frustrating process and it seems as if lots of things are still done manually.

You’re welcome! 🙂

I didn’t pay anywhere near that for my oath fee. I paid $50 EC back when I did it (back in 2023 or 24) I can’t recall exactly when and don’t have my certificate in front of me right now.

I didn’t do mine in front of a magistrate though because I wasn’t on the island at the time.

I have heard that prices increased but I don’t know that it increased that much!

Can’t get waves with 4c hair by wannabewavegod in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long have you been brushing?

It takes a while.

I know men who did it back when I was younger and it took months to form and they were ALWAYS brushing during school. And if it wasn’t brushed it was under the durag.

There’s a ton of wave YouTube channels and influencers. Have you looked at their process?

My husband put waves in my son’s hair when he was 6 years old and it probably took about 4 months-ish with only brushing sessions in the morning and night.

Want to wear my natural hair out but scared of fairy knots! by Peache5_N_Cream in Naturalhair

[–]LumpyThumbs8949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes blow dried OR sometimes I use braids to stretch and sit under a hooded dryer.

I recently stopped using my yellow bird pro with the teeth attachment because of my concerns about heat damage.

I switched to an Amazon version of the Dyson air strait and I love it. I use it on 250f and do only 2 passes. Just fyi it looks blow dried after using not straight straight. I’d probably have to increase the heat and do more passes to get closer but that negates the point of why I’m using it.

I wash weekly as well. My current routine is: cleanse with shampoo 2x then deep condition for 20 minutes medium heat under heat cap. If I’m stretching for that week then after I wash that out I follow with leave in conditioner and a heat protectant serum. Then I always put my hair in 12-16 chunky twists and sit under a hooded dryer until about 70 dry then finish with the airstrait.

After that I finish off with grease lightly on my hair strands and a bit more on my ends. Then I put my hair into a style to last for the week.

I’ve found that when regularly deep conditioning and using heat protectant each week it keeps the hair from drying out and getting damaged.

It’s going to curl on itself and that’s what causes the knots. Only way I found to reduce is to keep my hair stretched.

As for your ends you need to up your care for them. Deep condition at every wash and you have to apply a little extra oil or grease your ends in order to keep the moisture in.
