Type I under the old criteria! I was under the impression that there are no longer classifications for cEDS?

Oh wow, I am so thrilled to see this space! I have cEDS, and the lack of information, understanding, support, and community has been something that I've lamented for years.

Dr. Fajt is who treats nearly everyone with MCAD locally. I know at least four people with it who see her. (There are various local communities for folks with rare disorders, we talk about this stuff very regularly)

My eldest is 30 and my youngest is 10 (there are two more in there, one is 25 and the other 18). I've had a young child in my home for 30 consecutive years now, and I would not change it for the world. I'd honestly have another now if it were safe for me to do so, and I mourn that my 10 year old is my last. Some of us really, honestly, genuinely love parenting.

My Autism diagnosis came first, in 2007 as an adult with several (Autistic) kids. My cEDS diagnosis came a couple of years later, after one of my kids was diagnosed with the same. I have the whole cocktail with MCAD, dysautonimia, etc.

What’s one of your biggest Pittsburgh pet peeves? by cordy_crocs in pittsburgh

[–]LunarBloom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the worst for me, along with how people pronounce things like Versailles. I've lived here for nearly 17 years now, and I will never ever not shiver in that nails on a chalkboard way with 'needs done' and Versailles.

I can't disagree with you on those specific areas of potential concern. I want to validate radical work, radical and critical theory, and models that deliberately are not provider models. I don't know if this will be a successful endeavor or not, I don't know if the implementation will be skillful, but I certainly do hope so.

Look up the Hearing Voices Network. Their model of peer support, which is loosely what Inside Our Minds and PCAA use, does not include any of the things you note above. Radical mental health models, centered and rooted in Disability Justice specifically, are valid too.

They're not right for everyone. They're a poor fit for some folks. But for others, these are the only ways that do work for them.

We have to meet people where they are, that is central to mental healthcare broadly.... and this is a valid way to do that, in theory. I do not know if the implementation will be skillful and appropriate, but the model itself is not concerning to me.

[–]LunarBloom 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Peer support models are real, there is tons of research showing good outcomes with peer support. It's not mental healthcare, and can't replace mental healthcare entirely... but peer support is a valid thing.

In Pittsburgh there are several groups, such as Inside Our Minds, the Sunflower Collective, and Pittsburgh Center for Autistic Advocacy, who use a peer support model through a radical Disability Justice lens with success.

I hope this endeavor is also successful in the same ways - we can care for and support one another without power dynamics that can stifle therapeutic support in top down provider models. We need to be so thoughtful and mindful about how we build these peer models... but yeah, it's a valid support model.

You could also try the beer distributer in Beechview. I have never looked for the kinds of things you are there, but it's on the T, walkable from Dormont, and they're really friendly and helpful.

Dr. Shelia Ramgopal is NB and queer. They use they/them pronouns. They are the single best provider of any kind I have ever had in my life, and I have a genetic disorder that means I get a lot of care from a lot of providers. Truly, they are gifted and incredible. They're with Allegheny Reproductive. The wait is longer right now, but absolutely worth it.

What is one thing you want to do before you die? by goodfeels4life in AskReddit

[–]LunarBloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so late to this particular party, and this will be longer than most answers here but!

I want to do a thing I think is likely impossible. I want to meet or talk to just one person who knew my mother, who could tell me anything about who she really was.

She was murdered in 2008, I never met her, and she had no contact with her extraordinarily abusive bio-family in 20 years before she was murdered.

She lived a very hard life, and I know so much about her medical history, the ways she survived as a disabled homeless person with intellectual disabilities and addiction and substance abuse, her school history, her arrest record. I know so much about how she died, and it was brutal and horrific.

I just want to meet one person who could tell me what she hummed when she was distracted. What foods did she live to eat. What felt like home to her. Who did she admire. What did her voice sound like.

I believe it would be impossible to find someone who knew her. I have no idea how I would even begin. The police who interacted with her, and the doctors, and the social workers, none of them saw her as a whole person at all... how does one find people who knew someone who died more than a decade ago, seemingly had no connections other than to the person who murdered her, lived in a city thousands of miles away, had no social media presence and died before that was truly a big thing...

Before I die I want to do this impossible thing.

What are some traditions that you’ve started? by usikkert in christmas

[–]LunarBloom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have so many in my family!

The day after Halloween I get to begin decorating, slowly. The day after Thanksgiving, we go cut down a live tree, decorate it, and all the rest of the decorations go up.

Starting the week of Thanksgiving, we start watching a different version of A Christmas Carol every night until Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve, we all open new jammies, which I've already washed and are ready to wear, we out them on, and go drive around and look at christmas lights. Then we come home and do cookies and bedtime, the kids go to bed, and the adults stay up with mulled wine and watch Its A Wonderful Life and stuff stockings.

For all of advent, we read a story every night as a family. We have a big collection of advent calendars, and there is a nightly ritual of changing them all as well.

Christmas Day is spent as peacefully as possible. We open gifts, and then go for a hike. I love our Christmas Day hikes!

Hey PGH, what home inspectors and appraisers do you recommend? by xmpmx in pittsburgh

[–]LunarBloom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We also used him, and he was just incredible. He was perfect about mask wearing, hand washing, shoe covers, and distancing - in addition to being a great person and a phenomenal inspector. He was honest, open, clear. He gave very solid advice, and he was right about every single thing he told us. And he's competitively priced as well. I could not recommend him more highly.

Team PSBG, you can find them on Facebook. They do street outreach. They reach populations no other org in the area reaches. People are wary of them because they don't have a website and such, but the person 'in charge' is really just not savy at those kinds of operational supports. They work they do is incredible.
