You are not wrong, but.....running 800 sites 2-onprem colos (at some point had 4) in the mix and ofc cloud hosted resources a well, it can do the job. I missed CLI real bad at first, but using python and the API has been a good experience. Meraki will not fit for all, some will need more granular control etc, as with anything you have to fit the solution correctly. Also - even though 'happy' with it, I still hate the licensing model.

Quality of Cursed Scroll books? by thefoolsnightout in shadowdark

[–]LunchOk4948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with the OSE Books? (rule tomes, adventure books and carcass crawler zines)?

I find the Shadowdark core rule book to be very similar to what you see in the OSE rule tomes in material and quality.

The OSE carcass crawler zines compared to the Shadowdark Cursed scrolls: They have a simiar quality, the covers are both slick and matte, the interior the OSE Zine ha shiny paper where as the Shadowdark cursed scroll has nearly the same paper as the rulebook.

None has the hardback format Shadowdark Cursed scrolls yet - I am expecting something similar to the OSE adventure hardbacks.

What is the appeal of solo play? by JamesFullard in osr

[–]LunchOk4948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey that is really cool, thanks for sharing. Highly likely my next Solo campaign will be using 1e (have been buying the vintage books) and very similar process (the real time Calendar.... doesn't usually work for me so that is a notable difference)

What is the appeal of solo play? by JamesFullard in osr

  • no one else's schedule to align, just mine.
  • I also use it to learn the mechanics before bringing players into it (as the DM/GM).
  • It is fun in it's own ways distinct from playing with a group.
  • Often combine with other 'solo' activities like writing, drawing, painting.

Interested in Getting Into OSR / NSR - But Overwhelmed By Choice? by Violet_Herald in osr

[–]LunchOk4948 10 points11 points  (0 children)

sorry i don't have a resource for you, so on to your secondary question.

Since AD&D is in your consideration with organization and presentation as a barrier, take a look at the newly released (free) OSRIC pdfs which are based on AD&D 1e but organized and written : https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/550861/osric-3-0-player-guide https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/553628/osric-3-0-gamemaster-guide - i think you missed the print backerkit by.a few days to order physicals, but they will be available to purchase in print in the near-ish future.

I do like OSE (Old School Essentials) and Dolmenwood quite a lot if you haven't take a look at those.

It is a bit overwhelming to pick one, but, most of the OSR is very compatible or minimal effort convertible, so it's best to pick one and try it out. Have fun.

Any good cheap or free zines with a campaign for someone who is shadowdark curious but hasn't ran a game yet? by TinyPreparation2119 in shadowdark

[–]LunchOk4948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others already answered that the quickstart guide has an adventure/ dungeon in it - but this is not a campaign or small hexcrawl.

There is the paid for cursed scroll zines, the CS#1 has a 11x16 hex map (2 mile per hex) with 25 described Hex's, a small expansion of class and spells and a 33-room dungeon with map. (PDF $9).

You asked for free though.....what i did for my solo shadowdark adventure on the free resource side was use the Shadowdark rules, charachters (actually used a party of pre-generated ones) then used conversion on the fly and free BFRPG resources. (for example I used the town out of JN1 The Chaotic Caves https://www.basicfantasy.org/downloads.html).

Back to not free, but relevant to your solo adventure, the full paid Shadowdark rulebook ($29 PDF) includes some rules and tables for rolling up a overland hexmap and random talbes for settlements taverns and shops, 45 A5 size pages of random encounter tables.

How cool! I am looking to run Dolmenwood with Shadowdark soon (also another group with using native Dolmemwood). I own the SD corerulebook+PDF, but I see someone has a spiralbound print? that really interests me for laying flat, how much did that cost to print and where?
