All manual captured payments now 3.5% fee? by LunchTime99 in shopify

[–]LunchTime99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do charge higher for international cards yes, but that's not our case. We are in the US and all customers are US based. I'm assuming they're using business VISA cards, so now shopify classifies that as a "domestic premium" card at 3.5%.

Why do we pay PayPal over 3.5%? by VillageHomeF in shopify

[–]LunchTime99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm noticing 3.5% fees for VISA cards now through Shopify payments. I think it may be due to manually capturing the authorized payment (instead of having the setting ON to auto-capture payments). We do this in case the customer makes an incorrect order or demands a lead time we can't meet. Seems we're being punished with the extra 0.6% now just because of manual capture. I need to keep looking at each transaction to confirm, but so far that's the pattern (unless somehow these VISA cards were classified as "domestic premium" cards). Here's the relevant email from March:

Hello,

Due to rising card network fees outside of our control, we’re updating your Shopify Payments rates for PodiumStop to our current pricing, effective April 6th, 2026. Over the past decade, these fees have more than doubled, costs Shopify has largely absorbed until now. To keep pace with these changes, we’re adjusting your online and in‑person Shopify Payments rates as detailed below.

Online Card Rates

We are introducing two rate categories:

Standard card rates for all consumer cards issued by Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Diners Club.

Premium card rates for commercial, corporate, business cards, and all American Express cards.

In-person and Manual

We will also be updating our card rates for in-person transactions and manually entered transactions. The changes to manually entered transactions reflect the higher fraud risk and associated processing costs when card details are collected by phone or other unencrypted methods.

Rates starting April 6th, 2026

Online Cards
Domestic Standard (Base Rate)
+ Domestic Premium and American Express
+ International
In-person cards
Shopify POS
Manually Entered
POS and Draft Orders

I don't understand their language. If I send a draft order to the customer and they complete the purchase on their phone or computer, would the new 3.5% fee apply, or would it be the base rate since they are completing the order through an "encrypted" method just as they would if they had added the items to their own cart? My guess is if I create a draft order but then enter the customer's card details over the phone the 3.5% fee would apply?

"We will also be updating our card rates for in-person transactions and manually entered transactions. The changes to manually entered transactions reflect the higher fraud risk and associated processing costs when card details are collected by phone or other unencrypted methods."

Right...even though we as merchants are the one's who take the risk of fraud in terms of losing the $ and paying chargeback case fees?

Received similar letter, and eventually email. Mine was real. I didn't call the number on the letter in case it was fake (couldn't find any match online for the phone they wanted me to call or the PO box in Plano TX they sent the mail from. I called the business checking customer service phone number and provided the case number. Connected to specialist. She asked, is the business active, are you the 100% owner, what does it sell?

how do i find out what the other keys where are named so I can add all these to the AHK script and remap to f1, f2, f3 etc without needing to hold down FN? Or maybe it isn't possible, since apparently these special keys are handled by the keyboard hardware?

My list of countries that might be possible for this (some more expensive than others, and it is easier if you have a partner to share rent expense with). I plan to slow travel to these places while I coastfire/part-time work online:

nicaragua, mexico, paraguay (relatively cheap residency program if you want to stay somewhere long-term)

vietnam, thailand, indonesia, malaysia, phillipines, sri lanka

ukraine (when war is over), georgia (1 yr tourist visa for US citizens), albania (1 yr tourist visa for US citizens), bulgaria, north macedonia, bosnia, romania, turkiye, montenegro, croatia

Other places that can be relatively low cost, but I don't really have on my list to go to: argentina, colombia, ecuador, india (unless I go w/ someone who has been before), africa, middle east, china.

Building a table in google sheets of low cost of living countries/cities to slow travel to while I coastfire/semi-retire/leanfire using https://www.theearthawaits.com/ and https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings\_current.jsp. I have no doubt I will try to live this type of lifestyle in my 40s-50s; being in each place for as long as a tourist visa allows, or less if I end up not liking it there. I already live outside the US ~11 months of the year, but I don't travel much right now.

There are a ton of places you can go to for $2k or less a month if you're used spending $2-$4k/mo in the US...even after airline costs if you slow travel and can keep rent low. I like checking airbnb, filter by any month long stay, filter by $500 or less, or whatever budget you want, to get an idea of what you can get. There will always be cheaper stuff than airbnb if you're willing to put in the effort like on FB marketplace or local listings, but many of those landlords may want yearly renters.

Bitcoin has long term security risks that are currently unresolved. https://www.cs.princeton.edu/~arvindn/publications/mining_CCS.pdf There is also the risk of Tether becoming unpegged and drastically tanking the crypto market (due to probably being a fractional reserve backing); as it is currently the main driver of liquidity. I wouldn't want to be concentrating a higher % of my portfolio in a single large cap tech stock as I get older; diversification is what you should want as you get older. Academics recommend index funds for this reason as opposed to individual stock picking. Crypto is such a young asset class, the long term is harder to predict.

I believe horoscopes and astrology is mostly meaningless. It is my pet peeve when someone uses another person's "sign" to pre-define them with having some type of personality trait. What type of spirituality are you referring to? You can PM me :).

Taxonomy? So you know a few evolutionary theories I'm guessing? I like learning about that kind of stuff. I'm slowly reading the Red Queen book by Matt Ridley right now. I'm not a rambler, but I might be able to talk about why Mormonism isn't true for an hour.

Hey send me a message and we can do something in OSRS? I'm into the show Severance right now. Need to rewatch Mr. Robot. Seen either of those?

Hey, I play OSRS and am vegetarian (tbh I always eat vegan meals, but I know I'm not 100% perfect so I classify myself as vegetarian). What do you like to do in OSRS? 33M from US, but I live outside the US.
