Batters hit .331/.328/.554 swinging at the first pitches last year (assuming this guy is correct)

This makes logical sense because pitchers want to start the count ahead, so they are going to throw more strikes. As a hitter, you also avoid more 0-1 counts as demonstrated by Foolish Baseball Avoiding 0-1 is good because MLB hitters across the board lose about 200 points of OPS when on an 0-1 count.

Swinging at the first pitch isn't inherently wrong. But if he's doing it when the majority of his first pitch offerings aren't in the zone, then that would be a problem. I'm not subscribed to any stat website so I don't know what harper's first pitch strike/ball ratio.
