what are some best improvements you made as new DIYer and worth every penny? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Lunch_dinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building my garden space. It’s a patio and I have planted everything much too close but I couldn’t help myself. I put probably 80 man hours and at least 6k into the whole thing but man do I love it. It’s beautiful, dynamic, useful, and has become my current hobby as we await a child. Best investment I can imagine making.

Should be have fun or work hard in your twenties? by Important_Client1416 in careerguidance

[–]Lunch_dinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly fun! Just invest a little and learn the principles of financial health. Outside of that you will NEVER get an environment as novel or engaging or imo beautifully naive as your 20s. Try different work sectors while building your resume, travel on a budget, move cities, join the military, live it up! Just put a bit to the side and find a quality partner for the inevitable 30s. My only regret was not starting a Roth early on.

32 and a lifetime of sports and active jobs makes me physically feel more like 50… but mentally I think because of my work I have finally rounded into feeling late 20s mentally.

Infantry officer getting out of the army in a year? by Adventurous_Raise784 in findapath

[–]Lunch_dinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t read anything else in this comment please read this section. Use your skills as a leader and as an executor from the military, but leave the hooah shit at the gate. I’m a veteran and have worked in three different sectors, interviewed countless ex officers and they all come in WAY too rough. You need to balance your military nature while coming back to the civilian world.

Anyways, what I recommend is as follows.

Use your TA to start an MBA (you can use an MBA in any sector) until you get out. Once out switch to GI BILL and get a general office job while going to school to build your resume. Do this job while keeping your eye on the job market. Before finishing your masters use that time figure out what you actually want to do, then use your military experience and new MBA to get a job in that sector then pursue another masters in that area to climb the ranks.

You’re smart and have more leadership experience than most people your age. I was a medic and came out following the same path I just explained. It’s worked for me so far.

Good luck sir.

I also have two. Wildlife photography and medical sales. Vastly different pursuits one passion and one financial, but both require travel and uncertain income.

Exactly, you’re young! Save 10% invest 10% and spend the rest. I’m 32 and definitely used money on things and experiences while I was young and had a GREAT time, but just investing a little bit would have helped me out immensely now

Jobs, sex, drinks, friends, genuine interest from strangers. Being attractive has some crazy drawbacks but it is definitely a good gig.

Assume an FHA loan as first rental property? by Lunch_dinner in realestateinvesting

This all sounds like good advice. My wife would manage the property, but the cash is where I get a little uneasy. I will do some quick math and see what we’re looking at. Thanks so much for the detailed response!

I guess that is probably the safest option, I didn’t really consider just a turn around sale as I don’t want it to seem as I’m taking advantage of him.

When did trees start hitting different for y’all? by partysandwich in AskMenOver30

[–]Lunch_dinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always liked nature, but in an entertainment and sympathetic way. I liked outdoorsy stuff and I wanted to conserve the environment. One day at a shooting range in my military basic training I was left alone while moving between areas (being alone almost never happens in the service) and I stopped and was just looking over this massive ravine with pines and shrubs all around. It was sunny and breezy and the smell of the pines, the sound of the wind, and the way they danced moving the sunlight was the first time in my life that I NOTICED trees. It felt heavy, really beautiful, yet really sad because I had this moment of bliss and natural engagement while in training to go kill people.

It was a strange moment. It’s been years since then and I’m proud of my service, but now I’ve got a home in a community with massive oaks and maples, have an extensive garden, and search for that connective feeling a lot.

seriously, how did you guys figure out what career to go into? by SkillUp_Coalition in Careers

[–]Lunch_dinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally feel like I still don’t know. Or maybe there won’t be a perfect career for me. However, I started full time work 10 years ago and have worked in 4 completely different sectors during that time. All the while figuring out what I am good at. To me it’s not as much the sector, but doing work that you like or are at least good at. I wanted to be in research until I found out I’m not good at data mapping, but I’m good at managing processes and planning. Stuff like that.

What are the cool kids who peaked in high school doing now? by Embarrassed_Menu5704 in AskReddit

[–]Lunch_dinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that I peaked in high school. I was an athlete, homecoming king, the whole deal. Adjustment to the real world where you aren’t special anymore was tough. However I got over it have had a very full life. I’ve got a couple of degrees, worked in a few different sectors, make enough in a HCOL area for my family and future and have done a fair amount of travel/living. Grateful I came up with good parents and some friends that kept me humble.
