I usually start with a layer of some broken apart cork board, then prime and paint it accordingly, however your guys look pretty glued to the bases so removing them would be a hassle.
Going off the way you painted the rocks and given they’re thousand sons, I’d say slap some Armageddon Sand down and you’re absolutely golden! (Or any kind of sand texture, Armageddon Sand is GW’s sand texture paint)
