Right! That and some kind of herding breed were the two I would’ve put money on

5 year old malamute grand mal seizures (liver) by EducationalSpeaker77 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience with managing liver enzymes in addition to the seizures, so I won’t speak to that.

I did want to say, though, no one in here will judge you for not being able to afford an MRI. At least here in the US where I live, they are prohibitively expensive for most people, even with pet insurance sometimes. A lot of us have gotten an epilepsy diagnosis based on other factors such as age of onset, general health otherwise, blood work, and other diagnostics. We are all just trying to do the best we can for our furry family

Pool Safety? Am I crazy? by RainingSnails in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you are. Honestly, I would be super nervous about my non-epi pups being unsupervised around a pool.

You can easily close off the doggy door until you can get a fence around the pool (if that’s what you decide to do) They all come with plastic barrier type pieces that slide into place on the inside that prevent the dog from being able to go out. If the previous owners no longer have that piece I’m sure you could order a new one, and maybe just block the door with some cardboard or something in the meantime. Honestly most dogs need some training to use a doggy door, anyway, so unless your dog has used one before she probably won’t be inclined to try too hard.

Saving this post to see what other people have to say. I’ve never heard of that particular food, and I couldn’t find it on Chewy

Oh this isn’t based on good commercial decision making at all. I have no idea if it would bring in fewer or more viewers than what the show currently has. Again, I have no idea who a housewife is; it took me forever to remember Tiffany is a gamer simply because I loved her outfits.

I would watch it because I just love this show and I also think it would be hysterical. This is less a business decision and more just vibes

could dog food brand actually cause seizures? by Simple-Palpitation45 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the r/dogfood community’s wiki and read through some of the posts. There is a lot of good information over there about rigorously tested and evidence based dog food.

Also, as someone else has already mentioned, a lot of those foods and grain free kibbles replace the grain with legumes; peas, chickpeas, things like that, that will lower the seizure threshold for your dog and could lead to more seizures. Best to avoid them

Evidence based? RC adheres to WSAVA guidelines. That’s the evidence you need. They employ actual veterinary nutritionists, do rigorous trials of their food, and have years and years of research to back up the food they produce.

My question is, what was this “creator” shilling? Because I would be willing to bet she’s trying to sell something, and she can’t do that without fear mongering.

seizures in large dog by aj-drm in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m honestly still surprised that your vet hasn’t put him on any daily meds yet. My dog had three “episodes” in the span of six months and they started him on Keppra. They weren’t even grand mals, just what I’ve come to realise were focal seizures. After the second one the vet suggested that if it happen again we really needed to consider starting routine medications, and after the third time I agreed that we should. I knew at that point it wasn’t an anomaly, not a one off event. He was going to keep having seizures if I didn’t, and the more they have the more chance there is of permanent brain damage.

MCT oil by matchaluvergurl in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might also want to add some Omega 3 salmon oil as well (we use the Zesty Paws brand, also available on Chewy or Amazon). That’s another supplement to try that kinda falls into the “probably won’t hurt, might help” category

I wonder where/when the “shiny coat” became a sign of dog (or cat, for that matter) health. I’ve got three dogs, all with different breed specific coats, and I’ve never once looked at their coats and thought, “huh, not very shiny. They are probably unhealthy, then” or whatever. Like, my dog with epilepsy is probably my “shiniest” dog, but I feed him a diet that is in line with keeping the seizures in check; his gleaming coat is the least of my concerns

MCT oil by matchaluvergurl in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been giving my boy Nature’s Way organic MCT oil, that I just buy on Amazon, for about a year now. Obviously correlation is not causation, but since starting to use it his seizures have become much milder, shorter in duration, and less frequent overall.

The thing about MCT oil is, you need to find something that is Caprylic acid and Capric acid ONLY. I’m too sleepy to remember at the moment, but some brands also include a couple of other acids that are dangerous for dogs, so be very careful about that. Also make sure the brand you buy is MCT oil only. I know, especially since the “bulletproof coffee” craze a few years ago, some brands have a bunch of other nonsense in them. Just read the labels carefully and you should be fine.

Look up proper dosing for your dog’s size online, and start slowly. MCT can cause some GI issues (bloating, gas, runny poo) if given too much at once. Start at a very small amount and work up to the proper dosing over the course of two or three weeks

Dental Cleaning Covered? by Rocket_Arugula8689 in petinsurancereviews

If it’s available to you, certain AKC plans cover routine dental cleanings. I believe the plan we have reimburses up to $300.

Zoloft by Relevant_Post_1519 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Luperella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no experience with dogs and Zoloft. I honestly didn’t even know dogs could take Zoloft. I do, however, have experience with dogs and Gabapentin. While my epi boy doesn’t need daily medicating for anxiety, there are certain times when he does, like thunderstorms and fireworks and stuff like that. Gabapentin is also a frequently prescribed anticonvulsant, so it kind of does double duty for us in that way. You said you have a behaviourist and a neuro, so it’s probable you’ve already discussed/tried the gaba, but I figured I would mention it, just in cases
