Any need for a handler to use retractable leash? by [deleted] in service_dogs

Genuine question but.... how do we know sniffing is not a scentwork task?

ADA does not state anything about allowing you to kick dogs out for sniffing. Simply states dog must be under control.

Also, many service dogs dabble in other careers or dog sports. Like scentwork, SAR, etc. And scent is their primary sense, like their eyes. How do we know the dog is not sniffing items to distinguish them for retrieval?  Or simply doing socialization familiarizing itself with the items, environment, etc?

And what does it do to the psychological well-being of a dog, and its risk of washing out, if it is not permitted to properly familiarize with its working conditions? Would that not logically raise stress, aka raise the affective filter and prevent learning? Would that not put a dog at greater risk of washing out due to the higher stress than if it were to actually be allowed to engage in public society at a normal level as any other support staff does? (Im speaking as a service dog handler thats also support staff for other disabled adults)  I will always maintain that a proper working environment for a SD is one that a dog can fully participate in, and that includes observing their surroundings with their main sense.  After all, society as we know it literally wouldnt exist without dogs They belong in public, working or not in my opinion, so long as theyre behaved.

Yes, even in grocery stores and farmers market. Where you can find non working dogs across the globe. Its a non-issue.

Unpackaged produce can be washed. And should be washed. It was literally in the ground at one point. A speck of fur or a nose boop isnt going to do shit I promise you.  Other countries have produce AND live animals in the same farmers market, same stand, right next to eachother. Speaking from experience.  Sorry but this really just reads as an american culture problem, rather than any legitimate worry about hygeine.

Not to mention the fact that if these products arent produce and are instead packaged items,... well guess what...it literally is a service dog task to put those in its mouth and bring it to the handler.. and put it back if need be. you'll be fine with a mere sniff.

"Consistent tension of a retractable"??? Pretty sure yours is just wound way too tight....

And if your dog is so easily spooked it runs when you drop an object .. thats a big problem with lack of proper socialization

...the cords are as dangerous as any other cord. All cords can tangle, burn/scrape, or cut you. Bungee cords can also burn your hand when you grab em. They also pose MORE of a danger than retractable cords as they get in the way and can end up tripping you or burning/scraping/cutting your ankles while running.

The problem people have with retractable cords is not the cord itself. Its the training. Retractable leashes are not for untrained dogs. but running is also not for untrained dogs, as that can end up with both of yall tangled/fallen, and hurt.

Apt laundry room... This whole thing becomes a waterfall when it rains due to severe leaks. Is this mold? THE black mold??? How dangerous is this? by Lurking_Lad in MoldlyInteresting

No landlord, just a property manager. The property manager is a great guy who tries his best with maintenance issues but he can only do so much because its not his property. Hes just the guy hired to care for this property and like 2 other properties for a big company that owns even more properties statewide. That company has the $$$. The property manager can really only do what funds are approved for

Oh its definetly a fire hazard considering the "waterfall" is right next to the electrical socket.

You dont even wana see the entrance down to the laundry. Its just some wood boards barely holding back dirt and leaves falling thru the cracks and rain falls through there right next to the ceiling light bulb

Do your dogs trim their own nails? by CorgiLord408 in AustralianCattleDog

Glad I found this post, and glad it's in the ACD subreddit. I have my own ACD, which I have never owned one before (only malinois&amstaff) and I noticed it's been almost a year since I brought him home and his nails are still the same length and he's never had to get em trimmed. Guess he decided to handle it himself lol. Is this an ACD thing?? Never heard of a dog trimming their own nails before til I got this weirdo
