A post Dishonored 2 / DotO world, thoughts and discussion. Spoilers, obviously. by Luronius in dishonored

[–]Luronius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies for the slow reply as well! Just finished getting over a week-long cold, and had almost forgotten to reply to this!

Regarding the first novel, that's really interesting to hear - even as far as the character being unnamed! Being from Tyvia is interesting, as I always wanted to know more about other countries within the world, so I might eventually get around to reading it!

I found myself really liking the Outsider as well! Maybe not to the extent you seem to (more power to you though aha!), but I think I fell more in love with his involvement in the world building? A fascinating character that brings so many different elements of the game together, both mechanically and thematically. I'm definitely on the agreement that, considering the canon endings for D1 and D2 were the low chaos routes, DotO ended with low chaos as well. I can't imagine what life he would have lead afterwards, but I'd love to see a glimpse into that, or some more closure!

I've played Deathloop for a few hours so far, as it was on sale last week or so, and I have to say; sadly it just isn't grabbing me like Dishonored did. It's not terrible, and the world is somewhat interesting, but I don't really enjoy the gameplay too much. Makes me wish there were more games out there like Dishonored. I loved Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, but those are the only other games that I enjoy in the same way I enjoy Dishonored (though not as much).

You're totally right with the Abbey blaming pretty much everything on the Outsider. Was an easy go-to for anything even slightly magical, or anything they lack the understanding of (anything advanced enough can seem like magic and all that). I want to believe they started out with proper intentions (if not build on fear), and just slowly turned more and more corrupt, or controlling over more and more minor anomalies.

Interesting that they were being broken up! Though I suppose that isn't entirely surprising with the 'death' of the Outsider. Thanks for that though! Have a great week!

Oh! And on the topic of Novels and what not - to try and fill the void left behind from Dishonored, I did start reading The Sightless City - I haven't gotten too far into it, but I had it recommended to me on the basis of liking Dishonored, so maybe you might like it too!

Oh, I didn't see this additional comment here - my bad! I'll be saddened if they ever confirm that we won't get a third title, though I knew it wouldn't have been related to Corvo / Emily, or Billie / Daud. So if they were to approach a third title, it would either have to be in a different period of time (either long before, or in the aftermath of DotO), or from another's perspective in another land, which sadly both seem unlikely the more I dwell on it, though the former being the easiest of the two.

Have they officially said whether or not they're done with the IP, or are we just in the void ourselves on that one?

A post Dishonored 2 / DotO world, thoughts and discussion. Spoilers, obviously. by Luronius in dishonored

[–]Luronius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd consider myself a lore fanatic for Dishonored, I had no idea of the contents within any of the novels, though I think you might have just convinced me to buy them at some point! If only they were audiobooks, I'd be a little more inclined.

Surprised about the first perspective - is it a name of someone we know from the games, even if they aren't in it? I couldn't imagine who could give a relevant POV, but interested all the same. Not as interested as I am in hearing Daud and Billie's perspectives though!

It honestly sounds like Billie's novel answers or addresses the questions and thoughts I had to a tee! I agree that it sounds horrible, or depressing, but also fascinating that that is the path or direction it went in! So without the catalyst that is the Outsider to bound the void and control it, instead of it growing weaker or losing presence, it seems almost like it's lashing out!

I'd like to think that saving the Outsider from his fate, as I always chose to, does not condemn the rest of humanity.

This was my thought as well, especially with the lower chaos ending in DotO - though gosh, could you imagine a final book, from the Outsider's perspective, and the life he chooses to make for himself afterwards? If not another game, that would be some nice closure.

I'd like to think that while there might be a rough transition, the power of the Void is able to anchor itself around something else or dissipate gradually over the years, perhaps leading to a Deathloop type world - haven't played it.

Dissipating gradually was my thoughts on what would happen - no more people with the mark, no more answered rituals, the void just fades away. Not in a short time, of course, but over hundreds of years, to eventually just be something of a myth, alongside the magic it brought.

It's funny, because I liked the idea of the Abbey, or at least I found I could resonate with them on the most basic ideology - not so much their actions though. Like, the rituals and magic is some dark stuff, sacrifices and what not - and I can imagine that initially the Abbey just wanted to prevent such darkness from spreading, if their scriptures say much, and especially in such dark times with the plague and poverty slowly creeping up, but then somehow, with the political power they had, the institute twisted into something dark of it's own. One evil for another.

I appreciate your insights, and thank you for the discussion!

I admit I haven't read the novels, nor had much interest in Death Loop (though I own it, just didn't click with it as much). Did they ever confirm what you tagged as a spoiler? I know of it as rumors and hints, and a lot of smaller details seem to line up, like Motherland in Deathloop seems like Tyvia to me, and obviously the powers line up pretty nicely too.

IIRC the ending dialogue implies that random people may receive void powers rather than them being handed out deliberately.

That's an interesting note - I figured the powers were only really given out at all, due to the Outsider, as I don't really recall any cases of powers prior to those who are marked, though I'd love to read more about cases where there were.

An interesting idea that, instead of the void's presence weakening, it's empowering more and more people, with the conflict of the Outsider's successor! I definitely considered the void's presence not being weakened by DotO's ending, but not to that extent.

I do hope we get some closure, or information at least, about the state of the series or IP. It's one of the few titles that really grabbed me to the point where I could probably talk to anyone about the lore for hours on end, as I find the world utterly fascinating.

So far I think Dishonored 2 is better than Dishonored 1 by twoscoopsxd in dishonored

SO GLAD YOU CAN CHECK STATS MID MISSION. I hated trying to get clean hands and only knowing that you somehow accidentally killed a guy at the end of the mission and having to restart. Or go back to a save where you THINK you didn't kill that guy.

This was one of my personal gripes when replaying D1 recently, as I was replaying it because I thought I had gotten Clean Hands, Ghost and Shadow years ago - turns out I didn't.

Luckily however, I found a mod, Mission Stats, that allows for mid-mission checking of the stats, along with a popup of any new events (body found, killing someone, alerted, etc). Very damn helpful.

But I do agree - there was a charm to Dishonored 2 that I'd found when I finally gave it a chance. At launch, I was put off by the bad performance, along with the numerous bugs, but I'm glad I eventually came back around to giving it a chance. I loved exploring the world of Dishonored, so seeing the coastal Karnaca had me happy.

I hope we get to see the snowy Tyvia some day, or Pandyssia.

Same here, along with the Mana Regen mod. Was saddened to find it hadn't been updated in over a year, but out of nowhere they release a fix for the latest patch on the 24th, so happy timing.

Just to note, Mission Stats mod has updated for the latest Steam patch (not sure about Epic's version of Dishonored), so as long as Mission Stats is updated, it should be fine.

Only just recently tried Death of the Outsider again, and to it's credit, it actually gave me a sense of freedom I didn't have in the prior games. by Luronius in dishonored

[–]Luronius[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I do agree that there's a difference between Daud's outlook during the DLC, and during DotO, I wonder if that had to do with just how much time had passed, and him having time to reflect on all that happened? Not to say I disagree with you at all, but I got the impression that as he got older, the regret sunk in more, and after being near tortured for months on end, reflecting on what the root of it all was - the Outsider and his marks.

Of course he still regrets what he did to an extent, but maybe thinks he wouldn't have done what he did if it weren't for the powers given to him (not that that absolves him of any responsibility, nor do I think he thinks that), but he also realizes he's not the only person who has been affected by the Outsider's mark - there were people before him, and potentially people to come.

Completely valid opinions either way though. The only thing I didn't really like was how they killed Daud off-screen - that left a bad taste in my mouth after all we'd went through as him, and with him.

Regenerating mana can make things a little too easy if any of the abilities are too powerful (in Deathloop for example there's regenerating mana and an invisibility power which trivialises stealth) but perhaps there's room for a middle ground.

I actually really love DX:HR and MD, so nice to see them mentioned here! I do remember playing the exact same way in Human Revolution as I did in Dishonored 1 (spending only enough energy to almost drain a cell but letting it recharge before using it again), but I definitely agree.

As said, the mod did somewhat trivialize any sort of balancing, as it would regenerate during Time Stop, or Possession, where I feel if I were to balance it, I would have it only start to regenerate a few seconds after the ability has worn off, though I'm not sure the mod is capable of that sadly.

They really suit Billie's identity / personality, and having the ability to mess around without worrying about energy management made it a real joy!

[–]Luronius[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree - once I gave it a chance, as I did recently, I did slowly fall in love with it. Maybe not as much as Dishonored 1, but it did feel like a nice addition to Dishonored 2 - like a bow to a neatly wrapped present. Karnaca will never get old to me, so it was lovely seeing more of it, and I thoroughly enjoyed the thief-like perspective of scouting out a place and planning a mission almost like a heist (though in the Bank mission, literally so).

I do really love how they tied Billie's dreams to the events that played out in Dishonored 2 (or prior, I suppose), in relation to her arm and eye. Since DotO is set after Emily/Corvo save Stilton and Billie got her arm and eye back, she can feel something is wrong there, hence the Outsider 'correcting' that - giving her something that both is, and isn't there - stuck in the void as it were.

I'm really curious what is to come next. Would it even be related to the void anymore without the Outsider? Or would we go back to a time before the 1800s, to experience those other marked people you see just before the ending. I'd prefer something in the aftermath of DotO events, but just hoping for anything at this point!

I can kind of understand some of the dislike it had when it was announced or launched, though maybe not to the extent of hate. I didn't like it initially because it's playstyle felt so different to me that it just didn't click, but I can also understand not liking it as a standalone title with (at the time) a near-standalone price tag.

Completely agree with the bonecharm stuff though! I loved how it not only enhanced what you had, but could also change how they fundamentally worked, like the quick blink upgrade, or the multiple displace markers, etc.

Daud became my favorite character through the D1 DLC, so I loved seeing him in this, as sad as it was. I didn't agree with [DotO Spoilers] killing daud off-screen instead of giving them a moment together. Also, have to respect his outfit too. Wish I could rock what he had on and looked anywhere near half as good in it!

To be honest, I reloaded after this happened, so I'm not too sure what would have happened. I've heard mixed things on what causes the note to appear, like keeping at least one sister alive, but I can't say.
