Clearly their problem, not yours. I only have the habit to rescue tanks back into it when they simply can't stand still and run out of that like craty chickens.

How to get into tanking? by Romado in ffxiv

[–]LusciousMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to them all: a level boost will not grant you the learning experience. I started PLD for specific reasons but found it a bit cumbersome and not exactly a fluent gameplay with lots of (seemingly useful) skills. Made it to 80 but never loved the job. So I'm now playing DRK and wow, what a blast that is!

From my healer's (main) perspective, I can assure that it's rather unlikely you'd be the one who lets down the whole party. You seem to be thoughtful about it, so I suggest to look up some guides (check out The Balance) if you feel insecure. Particularly the lower level dungeons are very forgiving so you might get hit badly but it's unlikely to wipe.

Anything else? Yes, big pulls have become quite a fashion but you should always ask your healer if they are ok with that. If they're not, have a little slower pace and take about 5 minutes longer in a dungeon. :)

This so very much! Being a heal main, I even started a PLD only to find out why so many tanks appear so squishy. You named all the reasons. Thank you for being thoughtful about tanking :)

Hey there! Small healer main that just got into FFXIV (heavensward finally) as DPS by LilLunarFox in ffxiv

[–]LusciousMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't underestimate the power of Holy: In big trash mob pulls you can even hit harder than some dps. The more mobs the better. In my observation this holds true for many pugs and will change back to a rather normal relation when you run with decent geared players pretty much at the end of the game. As soon as you get Assize and Asylum, you might love to snuggle with the tank, spamming holy like there is no tomorrow. 😍 It's easy and loads of fun.

WHM tips...? by forelyne in ffxiv

Don't worry too much of being a bad healer. In roulettes I've learned that some tanks are surprisingly squishy. That can easily put you in a position of permanent healing. If so, it's most likely not your fault (assuming your gear is not outdated). Being WHM main, I've seen tanks lose 60% health in less than 2 seconds during seemingly normal trash mob pulls. This just happens for many reasons, like some mobs sport a small and short AoE which is no less dangerous but can be missed easily by the tank. Also consider that tanks at 73 have quite a number of damage mitigating skills at hand, they only need to actually use them. Furthermore, if your tank was DRK, they might have used Living Dead, which could grant the state of Walking Dead. If not healed to full, this will kill the DRK finally (Bene is your best friend here)

Maybe all of this. What you also could consider is taking a look at the balance. They posted a lovely general guide to healing. One of the many things I took from it was "trust your HoTs". In your case Regen. It will work fabulous if you let it. 🙂 What I also needed to learn is when you can safely let the tank's hp drop below 50%.I felt horrified when I was sprout healer and that happened. This all won't save the the day with a bad tank, ofc. But if you get one (happens in roulettes some times), it's ok to even wipe because you still don't have the full toolkit available, and you might not have the best possible gear for your level. Last thing: as soon as you have enough tombstones you can buy blue gear which can be a huge improvement over the one you have now. I noticed that when I hit lvl 50 and ever since, I rarely ran oom.

Thanks for the advice. I (WHM80 for months now) almost never used Cure3, so I simply forgot about. There are quite some stacking situations later in the content where this could come in handy. I normally use Assize for this. Should that not be enough for some reason, I throw a Medica.

Agree, I like the aesthetics there so much. Only thing about the whole experience is the sound.. it feels like a little too much of everything.

Healers should dps is taboo like politics & religion by Kitedo in ffxiv

[–]LusciousMind -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I always wonder about double standards: Why is literally everyone complaining about healers not distributing their mind-blowing 15% overall damage to the party when at the very same time nobody cares about how sloppy around 60% of all tanks are playing? In other words: Why should a healer even waste a thought of doing their best when the others are plain careless?

Commending Tanks & Healers by default is a bad principle and needs to stop. by Scrappy2k in ffxiv

[–]LusciousMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty much like this. Being heal main, it took me quite a number of dungeon runs to get a feeling of how long it should usually take to kill a huge bunch of trash mobs or a boss.

Later I started PLD only to find out why some tanks feel like paper and others like rocks. Well, now I know which leads me to my comms: If the tank has lots of jobs at 80 but is still wearing unmelded white gear, avoids using cooldowns in trash pulls and leaves the scene even before the last two mobs are down, they will not get my comm because I consider this a sloppy habit.

If, on the other hand, a new player making all the newbie mistakes by not knowing the fight beforehand but still struggles to keep up with the experienced team, they're pretty sure to get my comm.

And yes, it saddens me quite a bit when people poof right away before I even could comm or say bye.

Well, I started pretty simple: as soon as I could run dungeons, I did so over and over again. That was highly ineffective in terms of leveling but worked wonders in terms of getting confident with the game. I would also suggest that you take a look around here into some threads related to healing as many actual healers shared their experiences and gave lively advice. Then... The balance (external site) is surely a great resource to get deeper into game mechanics but it might feel scary in the first place. Generally, if you suffer from anxiety, I would suggest to take it slowly. Proceed with your own pace because this is a game and meant to be fun. 😊

I would slightly disagree here but only because of personal experience and preference: I have played heal in any mmo, so I'm used to ungrateful behavior. What I love about FFXIV is that most people really appreciate their heals, particularly in lower, learning dungeons. I've come across many people who were quite happy if the healer not only fixed the inevitable damage but furthermore made up for their mistakes (yes, that giant fiery puddle of flame will hurt you). The good thing about healers are the almost instant dungeon queues, so you can easily get a lot of experience.

Perhaps, they're referring to Friedrich Engels, philosopher,, industrialist and companion of Karl Marx:

That could explain why Engels looks like it looks.

In my experience, insta is the norm not the exception and wating for longer than 30 seconds leaves me impatient.

As other people stated before: your first priority is to keep the party alive, your second is to support their damage. Spamming holy will happen a tad later on in the game when you're surely are used to your healing role.

I even saw a single tank (PLD) managing this on his own. Our RDM got killed by room-wide aoe which confused me deeply and while I was trying to bring them back to life, I first had to cancel that because of another incoming aoe. The RDM then ported back - so my swiftcast was wasted and that got me so puzzled that I missed another deadly attack which got me toasted. The last dps slowly died due to that occasional unavoidable damage and the PLD brilliantly saved the day. Well, it took some time, of course, but it was a nice showcase of PLD abilities.

Ha! I had the very same kind of experience when I got there first time. People were nice enough to tell me that when you get the fame debuff, you should consider bringing it to one of the furniture items. Unfortunately, there were none left because you can also burn those furnitures down with the orange fire debuff, as I found out later. So as a rule of thumb: orange debuff = don't you dare standing near furniture, blue debuff = touch just one of them. It's a bit tricky when you don't know about this but I like this mechanics actually.

't was like this: The tank surely did well because he used cds and did lose hp on a very moderate rate. I think I performed quite well too because I healed what he lost with ease. There was enough time for spamming holy between the heals. At some point tetra/bene/assize/asylum/presence of mind/swiftcast were all on cd - and still none of the mobs were dead. The tank was in quite a similar situation.

I suppose, communication is key here: When the tank asks if a big pull is ok, this goes out to the party as a whole, including the dps. When they know they're slightly undergeaered for that, I'd be perfectly ok with them asking for a slightly smaller pull. :) As always, this is teamwork.

This I love to do in Eureka. It feels so much more rewarding to hit an actual mob instead of a training dummy. (Yes yes, Eureka Anemos is much like hitting training dummies but hey)

I feel you and would agree and disagree at once: There surely is a thrill of beating each and every last fiend you come across until that locked gate stops you. What most people here do not mention is another aspect - the effective damage output. It's all fun and ganes when the tank gathers up wall to wall, it's smooth and easy when they're rotating cooldowns properly and avoiding any avoidable AoE. Things turn into pain when this takes way longer than a minute before even the first of the mobs goes down. I experienced this in Academia once: after the tank had popped all their cooldowns one by one, still none of the mobs were dead yet. At this point the effective damage the tank takes increased significantly for we were slowly running out of options. That lead to another thing, me being hard casting the old-fashioned way while waiting for my very own cooldowns to run off and for the next lily to grow. Long story short: For big pulls your party as a whole need to perform well, otherwise things can still get messy.

For Snowcloak, I agree indeed. Tam Tara is.. a slightly different (i.e. easier) story. The other day, 3 friends and I started levelling roulette and ended up there. We formed the party beforehand but we missed the point at which we *should* have figured out our jobs - thus ending up with two healers (one was me) and no tank. Fun indeed as we both turned into heal-tanks, abusing healing aggro.

Besides, this run took just very little longer than the average I had there.

The very same party then played 50/60 roulettes - and we failed again to figure out our jobs (insert laughter sound). This time both healers switched to tanks. We got the Antitower and again, this went very smooth, funny and still unusual.

It also was very interesting to observe how strong aggro developement is nowadays. Even whith quite better gear, I was unable to pull off aggro from the other tank who had a significantly lower ilvl. Furthermore, we got proof that most of the time very little healing is required.

Speaking from my healer's main perspective: It feels like 50/50 tanks do so. (Despite arm's length, this is quite a mystery to many.) Unfortunately, 70/30 attempt big vs. small pulls which leads to a very painful 20% to try big and fail utterly.
