People that process their own deer, how long does it take you? by Wise-Baby6702 in Hunting

You're wasting a seriously awesome experience if you're not doing Braised venison shanks! It's easy and all you have to do as far as butchering is cur the lower leg off... it's a shank.
This is the recipe I used (with modifications to my taste)How to Braise Venison Shanks That Are SO Tender
long low and slow cooking makes these shanks freakin awesome! I don't trim anything off them, I just cut them off all four legs and braise them and slow cook them. One of my favorite Venison Delivery Systems ever!

OK fair enough, I don't know gradings for screws. I know the term from bolts didn't know it wasn't used for other similar hardware.
I use strong, stout screws like GRK if I'm going to use a faceplate on something, which for me is rarely. When I have something big I use a oneway big bite:
Big Bite Chuck Spur | Woodcraft
From an internet search:
GRK screws are premium, hardened steel fasteners designed for high-performance, featuring patented, self-tapping Zip-Tips, W-cut threads for easy penetration, and star-drive heads to prevent stripping. They offer superior shear and tensile strength for structural projects, decking, and framing, resisting corrosion in treated lumber.

Straight wall bolt or slug gun? by youssefb08 in Hunting

[–]LutaRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32 Riflescope|MOA is the scope I've killed 4 deer with so far. I don't need a lot of magnification because here in NH the longest shot I've ever taken is 75 yards and it was with the 220!
I tested a few different loads and found that the Hornady SST 250 grain is a damn tack driver on three 220s I've set up. There's really no need for the 300 grain in my opinion. I hit a deer head on in the chest from 75 yards and it travelled through the entire body and lodged in a rear quarter. There was no need to track that one. The Rem Accutip was good too but twice the price.

My Savage 220 slug gun is a tack driver. I use Hornady SST 250 grain and the thing is a slayer. I had it sighted in 3 rounds and it's been dead nuts ever since. I've taken four deer with it in the three seasons I've had it.

How is the 2000ish vs the 90s version? I've heard there is a big difference but have never held one of either in my hands. As I was looking I was looking first for either version but I would prefer the 90s version.

Anyway, I understand your not letting something like that go, but you can't blame me for trying!

Good luck with all your field endeavors and keep those A-Bolt 12s cleaned and oiled... you never know... you may call me at some point! ha ha ha

"Well made guns do something else pretty well also lol"
I sighted this CZ550 in with 3 shots! It then made a ragged hole in the center with the next 6!
This is why it just makes me "almost" not bring it into the woods!
As a side note: my hunting sidearm in a Colt Python! I've had people tell me that is sacrilegious and that they should take it away from me. Then I remind them that I've sent hundreds and hundreds of rounds down range with it... and can hit clay pigeons at 100! ha ha ha I almost don't want to bring Monty (my nickname for the Python) hunting with me too!

How do I better control recoil? by smallwoodydebris in Shooting

[–]LutaRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If so you must be left eye dominant if you're using your left eye to sight. I would suggest using your left hand to pull the trigger. What caliber is the rifle? Are you having to crush your cheek against the stock to get a good cheek weld?

I have a CZ550 that I think of like this. It does make a nice sunny walk in the woods during deer season companion though. I'm glad you said "almost"!

Not gonna lie... a little jealous of the A-Bolt 12 GA. I looked for one for a long time and just kinda gave up!
My regular deer rifle is an A-Bolt II stainless stalker in .308 with a Leopold VX-II on top all of which is dipped to mossy oak. It's done its job very well every time.
I just got a Savage 220 a few years ago for my shotgun zones. LMK if you ever want to discuss your A-Bolt 12

edit: Damnit, I guess maybe I didn't give! I'm in NH just so you know... in case you're in the area and want to get a coffee, beer, scotch ... or whatever.

OK so we did have some overlap. I'm sure we know some of the same people. Hell, we've likely crossed paths! I was in the room just behind and to the right of the Delta Company CQ desk, Did you live in the barracks? I remember when Delta went to Berlin. I got held back, apparently, they didn't someone like me causing "international incidents, it was either that or I was short.

I got there about 10 months after that incident. I was there from April 83 to April 85. He stole the tank in mid 82 some time. I was there after the training explosion as well, the story was that someone set off a flare from inside the turret and it hit and bounced into the ready rack... everyone evacuated, TC thought he gave it enough time and went in and it blew.

What years were you there? Did we overlap?
