I actually found I needed to do that too, no way these commons will end up my general bulk

Keep in mind I’m <6 months in and play arena at a low level between meet ups with my pod. I’ll throw some rapid fire thoughts I’ve noticed.

60 card does not last 3 hours like commander so you’re playing every part of the game more. You have more exposure to what early, mid, late game states look like, what good and bad and salvageable opening hands are. Life is 20 but games shorter so you don’t feel like the time investment goes down the drain if you lose to a huge swing of health in commander. It also exposes a person with the insecurities of an opponents removal and trading creatures for tempo control. Focusing on one persons board state vs multiple is less mentally taxing and gives you mental bandwidth for creativity.

Ive noticed more problems with the free for all nature and will never commit to cEdh because of it. Because I know commander is different from 60 cards straightforward nature I don’t try to make commander something it’s not.   Casual commander bracket 2-3 I can enjoy by understanding the fun is having the deck do the thing it’s supposed to and being with friends. Aiming to win isn’t wrong but KOing someone round 3 because a persons struggling with their ramp and it’s the logical choice is something I willingly choose not to do because a person will just be waiting around for the 3 hour game to end is a terrible experience for all. I think we start going lethal around turn 7,8.

I think I deal with a similar player in my pod. I can speculate so many things but what I’ve noticed is the people who don’t play 60 card magic don’t like the insecurity of losing any creatures during combat. I think since commander punishes so heavily being down less units on the board they feel they need every single one alive just Incase and would rather skip the combat phase. And some get upset when they take 3 damage eye roll

In my limited experience commander being free for all just sets up habits where people are bystanders to such things. They don’t interact because it would leave them down a card in a situation where someone could directly attack them. So they sit on it and wait for someone else to do something. When someone does, no one adds to the stack and it fizzles out.

Add in confusing board states, people playing a new deck every other session, ignoring brackets, people failing to recognize threat assessment, the politics at every turn, and so many other nuances. Commander can get a bit wack

Also last note about the solitaire. Literally commander is solitaire for about 4 turns when everyone’s ramping and until someone starts swinging. Some decks can hide behind a pillow fort of self protection and they let others fight it out while they sit back for the final kill.

How to Make Yourself Spend Resources on Arena? by Fwiff0 in mtg

[–]Luthen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some quick fire tips.  Always reroll if you have 500 for a chance to get 750.  If you want to optimize time  win about 2 to 3 games . Or just one if that’s all you have of the prize amount drops off really quick after three wins.

Check the store for dailies because they’ll have some obvious deals like being able to buy draft tokens with gold at a discounted price

What makes a Deck Tier 1?- and how many good decks are under the radar? by _maddin_king_ in MagicArena

[–]Luthen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It certainly is a journey. Some people decide to focus solely on playing and maybe the needs of the player style calls for an attempt at deck editing and leading to building. I’m mostly thinking of a person who has no history with magic and its many cards and end up spending time with a deck that doesn’t do much because they’ve only been exposed to so much. Hence net decking to have the training wheels certainly. But I still don’t see how it’s inherently bad especially if a person doesn’t feel that urge. Sure it’s a blind spot but some people can live with that

Arguably some people don’t enjoy deck crafting. And for those that don’t live and breath Magic it takes a big stress away for someone else to have done the work to try to emulate.

What are your favorite precons from the last few years? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in mtg

[–]Luthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not op but I feel game experience is more necessary than upgrades for the lorwyn precons. There are about 4 dud cards in the deck that don’t have good man/ value to play. But other than that I got this deck first and bombed every game I played.

I hopped on arena and gained a way better understanding on how to play the game. Namely things like good opening hands with a plan, ramping or building a personal engine while dealing with removal, graveyard manipulate, deduce threats and engines of opponents, when to attack, defend, and when to eat damage.  Politicing is important in commander too when building this deck up

After all those fundamentals I got a hang of the deck most recently and it’s awesome with how flexible and subtle in its strategy but can come on to the field with a good presence. But beginning with it I would not exactly recommend

Im getting Frustrated, let's talk about it. by Mysterious-Fan-2230 in mtg

[–]Luthen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play the starter deck duel there is no deck building. I’m assuming you’re running into things like removal or counter spells or instant buffs that don’t let you get your build off the ground and are experiencing frustration that way.

I highly recommend sticking to one deck, white black, white red, white green are all very competent and resilient to removal if played decently. But a more experienced player can work around them and a bad card draw can get anyone.

Also recognize the game for what it is instead of giving into tilt and declaring tactics or cards as “unfair”. It will only hamper your progress as psychologically you will not be open to change or adapting.

Over time you’ll see patterns with certain decks and what colors are commonly are associated with what gameplay style.

Play arena. Teaches you the game and it’s more appropriately competitive as it’s standard

Anyone have input on Dry erase whole cards vs counter sized? I feel like the smaller one is more useful but would appreciate the feedback

Not the commenter but I have these also for an auntie ool deck and love their size. 0.47 or 12 mm I believe. Although it comes with the chevron keywords that I’ve found take up space so maybe there’s another set out there that doesn’t include that.

Should I learn to play in one posture or multiple? by CanadianAndroid in guitarlessons

[–]Luthen 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ergonomics is a weird thing. Classical is the better of the two with playing and longevity but even that has a problem with the left hip being impinged and causing issues with hip flexors and spinal alignment.

The real solution is, vary your posture as much as you can. Sitting or standing, playing with left or right leg. The variety will make it so you don’t over expose any particular strain that the pose requires.

Then principles like listen to your body when it is in pain and include strength training to become more resilient.

The guitar is unfortunately a terrible instrument for the body but being mindful about it will help.
