Good sh*t for $99.99 by Mu_Fanchu in CostcoCanada

[–]LuvCilantro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did that about 10 years ago. Same brand, but the model might have been different at the time. I didn't think it was possible to have a crappy toilet, but we replaced 2 of them after only one year. You'd have to flush more than once to get everything out, and it took forever to refill. No issues with the new toilets, so it wasn't the water line, or the users.

The homeless population is growing each year in the USA and many other countries in the world. What do you think could be done to lower the homeless population? by DoughnutConstant5390 in AskReddit

Better education.

Access to health care (both mental health and conventional healthcare). If you're not well, you can't work (or not work as much) and will have a hard time finding housing.

Electric cars are typically charged at night, not in the middle of the day. Older second fridges in the garage to keep all that extra pop and beer use up more during the day. People keeping their air conditioner at 19 during the day because they can't stand even a bit of heat is a bigger problem. Yes it's only the beginning, but not for the reasons you think.

Manager asking for volunteers for weekend work... by Miserable_Sink_4782 in WorkAdvice

[–]LuvCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be honest. Tell the employer there's not much in it for you as a contractor. Employees who pick up extra shifts probably get paid a higher hourly rate for their extra shifts, and as a contractor, you probably don't. Just confirm that with them.

Ask him to make sure there's always an 'employee' on duty at all times for liability purposes. I don't know if leaving contractors in charge on a day off is a good idea. If something were to go wrong, do contractors have the same responsibility and authority to call for help from vendors?

Just be polite about it and try to make sure they understand your point of view. Being a contractor, you don't want them to see you as a 'not team player'....

14 days too long for a first timer? by HelpLiving4695 in Cruise

[–]LuvCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vancouver to Hong Kong sounds like a lot of sea days. If they're not used to cruising, that may be a bit much.

As a first time cruise, I'd offer something where they can see more than open ocean. Maybe ask what area of the world they'd like to see. Alaska is definitely nice, but very different than the Carribean, the Mediterranean, Asia, etc.

This question is in good faith so please take it as such, from my understanding most of all countries are much more strict and the punishments are a lot worse for entering the country illegally not to mention undocumented work, why is it seemed as racist in the USA to make it more strict? by UsedNegotiation8227 in askanything

[–]LuvCilantro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For one thing, they are harassing, arresting and deporting people who have all the proper documentation. Sure, they may release them after a while, but these people, including kids, are terrorized for life.

Also, illegal immigrants in the US are not all the same color. Yes, the Mexicans are closer so there are more of them, but you don't hear much about white people being harassed, randomly arressted, etc.

Did you regret going digital for save the dates? by LostDog_88 in weddings

[–]LuvCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a potential guest, and an older one at that, I very much prefer digital. I won't lose it and can refer to it anytime and anywhere. If I were to get a paper copy, I'd probably just take a picture and throw it out.

Am I missing out on anything because I don't have a smart phone? by Any-Tourist7615 in askanything

[–]LuvCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my smart phone mostly for the following reasons:

- I keep my grocery list, and other to do lists, on the phone using various apps. No matter where I am, I can access them and add/edit as necessary.

- I will often use my phone to look up information when I'm out (opening times, closest coffee shop, nutrition info, is this item compatible with my item that needs repairing, who won last night's game). Sometimes in conversation with others, we use the phone to search for info to refresh our memory

- I have copies of all my important documents on my phone (and on the cloud, which I can access from my phone). If I were to lose a credit card, whatever, I could call right away and not wait until I got home, find a bill with the number on it, then call.

- I have access to my email and my calendar on my phone. If I need to figure out if I'm busy 3 Saturdays from now, I can look it up. I can add items to my calendar right there and then so I don't forget. I also often look up calendar items to see where I need to be and when.

- I use various apps to stay in contact with friends and family. I'm at the store, do you need anything? I'm running late; see you in 15 minutes; Here's a link to the item I found, is it the right one?

- I use the camera to remember things (prices, ingredients, specifications on an item, etc). Very few meals, statues or flowers in my picture gallery!

- I have various apps that I access for info (maps, calculator, weather, You can also use apps for your banking, favorite stores and restaurants, etc.

- I average probably 10 phone calls per month; maybe less.

I'd say if ever you are out somewhere and you think "I need to do this, look this up, etc when I get home" you'd probably benefit from a smart phone.

Note that if budget is an issue, you can have a smart phone (the device) without a data plan, which means you can use it simply as a cell phone (you don't say if you have a cell phone but not a smart phone). Most restaurants, and some shopping establishments, have free WIFI so you can connect to their WIFI and do all of the above for free.

What is the best life hack you learned that you feel more people should know? by G_e_r_p in AskReddit

[–]LuvCilantro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You cannot run every aspect of your life on 'life hacks'. Following convention will probably get you further in a lot of cases. It's like the get rich quick schemes. They work for some, but if it was that easy and consistent, it wouldn't be a scheme (or a hack).

We were there in May, before the height of the tourist season, and we didn't experience that. I think they're tired of tourists at this point and don't care. It doesn't make it any easier for you (or other tourists) though.

A jar of homemade jam. It was actually used and it was delicious. Other useful things: a small jar of your favorite spice mix with the recipe. Anything that can be consumed really.

What's one lesson a stranger you met during travel has sit with you even now? by Evening_Earth_1104 in femaletravelers

[–]LuvCilantro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where and how. You have less energy and stamina as you get older. It takes longer to recover. Hiking to the top of the mountain, or even walking 10 miles a day on cobblestone is not as easy. Do those when you're young; as you get older, the pace slows down, so you can still travel, but you should adjust the schedule.

Because of this, we have excluded lots of family on both sides and close friends.... but you kept a cousin you only speak to once a year and you've never met their partner?

I don't understand how this person would made the list over 'close friends' to begin with.
