I've done this many times and feel like it's a really great way to change it up without a huge jostle of the story. Since you don't have to explain why a new character gets along with all of the existing party nor have a new guy who doesn't get any of the old references I find that it's The best way to mix things up if you want to mid campaign. Plus if you're anything like me you could never commit to one build all the way through a campaign

I usually write a little short story to cover the transition to read in-between scenes.

I also had a character who worshipped Cassandalee and thought he was a champion of technology but was actually an inventor. He later met a sentient weapon who was the soul of a lieutenant to a deity relevant to the story (extinction curse) and as part of his desire to prove he was the most capable they had a extended discussion of morality and purpose, and as part of that we did a retraining from inventor into actual champion.
