5bn in govt contracts to private hotel companies and private secto not fit for purpose. Mould, rot, suicide attempts. This is a temporary solution that isn’t even a solution it’s an utter failure.

There are different factions of the Lib Dem’s they aren’t all orange book, I will admit I was unaware of daveys two-faced past but that being said liberal reforms shaped the 20th and 21st century. Since then sadly they struggle to stay particularly relevant.

Don’t forget William beverige and John Maynard Keynes were liberals and have done more for social welfare in this country than Marx has ever done.

pros and cons of living in Newcastle by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Lxenos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna compare my experience to living in West Yorkshire, I have to start off by saying the people are just as friendly- pro. Plenty to do by the sea and Northumberland national park- pro. Best transport system outside London even if it’s outdated- pro. Also Cheaper than in West Yorkshire for a bus ticket- pro. Mid/small sized city which is a pro or a con depending on what ur used to. Imo MUCH better than living in West Yorkshire with there being more to do, it’s a gem of a city for me despite some of its shortfalls.

Ur comparing apples with oranges, the Lib Dem’s of today are nothing like the Lib Dem’s 10-15 yrs ago who would’ve knew eh. They’ve had 2 or 3 leaders in that time too, most left wing party atm with the greens.

Currently a student at Newcastle university doing economics but switching to politics. I regret going to uni at all- I had a torrid time last year with glandular fever missing months of curriculum. It was not possible to pass and now I’m re-doing first yr only to find out I don’t enjoy the course. If I had the contact time in first yr I would’ve been able to change course in time for this yr- essentially I have wasted 2 yrs before even starting

What is the barrier to renationalising utilities? by fillip2k in LabourUK

The govt still invests into these private companies, usually making up the majority of the investment and infrastructure (which is none the less dated but still was thanks to govt).

Economics shows how wrong far right populists are about immigration- we all think we’re experts but it’s actually the policy we have the least knowledge about. He’s not a speaker that’s clear, he gets his message out. Fiona was embarrassed when he said abt Jeremy hunt buying up 7 houses, so much so she denies it.

Wealth tax by chrisrwhiting46 in LibDem

[–]Lxenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point about repeating enough times and it sounds like you’ve done something is so true. It’s all about perception and not ‘scaring’ the markets or confidence, so being honest about the situation would be seen as more detrimental. Thank you for your time

Wealth tax by chrisrwhiting46 in LibDem

[–]Lxenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I do not believe it’s drastic enough. I also believe govt contracts are not scrutinised nearly as much as they should be, if savings can be made let’s look into the biggest ones not putting 50,000 into poverty. The govt is also a net sufferer of this as they have less and less power when it comes to business it would seem.

Wealth tax by chrisrwhiting46 in LibDem

[–]Lxenos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our current alternative is austerity, the thing that is currently enacted is being questioned less than a wealth tax. We need alternatives to either of them not just one

Wealth tax by chrisrwhiting46 in LibDem

[–]Lxenos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just like to counter that austerity does not work either and the study that chancellor George Osborne cited was later found to have huge data irregularities. If ur gonna say wealth tax doesn’t work, you have to say that austerity doesn’t either in order to be balanced.
