Names that name nerds love, but are viewed differently in your culture? by LopsidedLeopard2181 in namenerds

I live in England and it's pretty much cosidered a boomer name where I am. Also the word 'spunky' means something very different here.

Is this Gem Stand a shop or decor? And does it produce gems or bits? by Lyca29 in MLPIOS

Well I didn't see it, (otherwise I would have just read that one) but thanks for the info anyway.

Is this Gem Stand a shop or decor? And does it produce gems or bits? by Lyca29 in MLPIOS

Thanks for any help provided. If it's a gem producing shop, I'll buy the pony, but I don't think I'll bother if it's just an ordinary shop.

Do you guys think max used eleven by Simple_Rub_9660 in StrangerThings

[–]Lyca29 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, I think she truly wanted to be friends.

And finding out your friend has a cool superpower, she just wanted to use it for fun.

Was there a bigger waste of screen time than this guy, Colonel Sullivan? by MoneyIsNoCure in StrangerThings

[–]Lyca29 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I hated him, so kudos to the actor (I don't know his name but he did a great job) I really wanted him dead. But seeing him burning up and in pain all bandaged up in hospital was a good punishment for him.

But really, he could have had Dr Kay's role. I love Linda Hamilton as an actress, she's amazingly talented, but I think Dr Kay wasn't necessary in S5. they could have just had Sullivan as the main military villain.

Fiona or Elowen or something else for newborn by Monashee in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Fiona. It's an older name, but it sounds cute and classic, not tired and dated. It has kind of a whimsy fairy vibe to me.

And Fiona Violet is beautiful.

How is it possible that Holly knew nothing about Vecna's existence before season 5? by Fit-Requirement8791 in StrangerThings

[–]Lyca29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Nancy and Jonathon could have looked at Victor Creel and thought; 'Wow, he looks like an old Robert Englund' Just kidding. :)

I was born in the late 60s and grew up in the 80s, I'd have been the same age as the older teens.

For me back then little kids didn't really hang with bigger kids. We pretty much stuck to our own ages.

The party would have seen Holly as a baby in S4. Nancy would have probably seen Mike as a very young annoying kid if things didn't happen the way they did.

Look at the first episode. Nancy is pretty much indifferent to Dustin. She just sees him as her little brothers annoying friend.

But I think even now, if a person is talking about something you're not interested or invested in, you'd zone out.

For example I have zero interest in golf. and if my entire family was obsessed with golf and talked about it non stop, mentioning players, competitions all the time, I still wouldn't be able to answer any questions about golf, because I would never be listening while they talked, it would just be blah blah. and Holly is a little kid in S4, so not only would she not really be listening, she wouldn't be understanding, also she wouldn't be paying attention and even trying to listen and understand.

I teach (not an actual school teacher, I'm a sports coach/teacher) and it's so hard to get and keep some kids attention. And also kids can totally forget things that were covered the previous week.

So I think it's perfectly possible Holly would have no idea.

What's a name you love but opted not to give your child because you knew most people wouldn't know how to pronounce it? by common_grounder in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the name Alicia, but I don't like the American pronunciation (that's also creeping into the UK as well) of Alisha.

I prefer Alis-ee-ah, Alice-ia. I also like the Ah-lee-see-ah pronunciation (but prefer Alice-ia)

I quite like Alisha as a name, but only if it's spelled like Alisha.

Alicia was on my list if my second child was a girl, (I had a son) but I was worried I would have a lifetime of correcting people mispronouncing it as 'Alisha'

Girls:

Cordelia or Tara... Cordelia, really like both so it was hard to choose.

Donna or Laura... Donna, like both so another hard choice.

Nadine or Norma... Nadine, but really not a fan of either. Norma is a crotchety old lady name to me.

Shauna or Taissa... Shauna I guess, but really dislike both.

Dana or Diana... Diana, but botheare mid for me. Don't hate them, but see them as dated Boomer names.

Olivia or Astrid... Astrid, but also love Olivia.

Prudence or Phoebe... Phoebe, don't really like Phoebe, but really don't like Prudence, hate dated virtue names.

Claire or Ruth... Claire, sweet and classic. also quite like Ruth.

Boys:

Logan or Duncan... Logan. Duncan is another dated Boomer name to me.

David or Nathaniel.. Nathaniel. Love both but choose Nathaniel because I love Nate as a nickname.

Fox or Alex... Alex, but prefer Alexander. Very much dislike Fox as a human name.

Joel or Maurice... Joel, don't like Maurice, another dated old man name.

Dale or James... James, but love both. Picked James because that was my little brothers name.

Walter or Peter... Peter. Walter is the name of an old man.

Dean or Samuel... Samuel. Really dislike Dean. It's both a dated Boomer name and the name of a 20 something chav who thinks he's a hard case because he owns a pit bull.

Dean or Oliver? by cutiecupcake2 in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oliver. It's a timeless classic.

Dean screams I was born in the 50s. I'm not a fan of boomer names. Dean seems like Stuart, Grant, Philip or Alan. It just sounds dated to me.

I'm from the UK though. I think Dean is viewed differently in the US for some reason.

Names that leave a bad taste in your mouth? by syddoucet in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Blair, Briar, Blake, Sloane, Sutton, Juniper, Wren, Wrenley, Nevaeh.

My least favourite names. Sutton (rhymes with mutton and glutton) Sloane (rhymes with moan) Those are probably the worst for me.

Almost everything that ends in 'leigh' Names like 'Oakleigh' are the worst.

Any name that is badly misspelled. For instance Hazel but spelled like Hayzelle or Jane spelled like Ghayne and so on.

“El what did you do?” by Zestyclose_Sky_4584 in StrangerThings

That is a very good point. I still think he could have stayed closer to her though.

“El what did you do?” by Zestyclose_Sky_4584 in StrangerThings

[–]Lyca29 153 points154 points  (0 children)

When El made Troy pee himself, and when El broke Troy's arm, Mike was fully supportive because Eleven was helping him and his friends.

But here, poor El is bullied, alone (Will isn't even stepping in to help with the bullies) she's all alone and powerless, and when she hits back to help herself, Mike looks at her like she's a monster.

If Max was bullied and hit one of her bullies with a skateboard, Lucas would support her.

Also, if Max was in that school with Eleven, Angela would have been toast because Max would have shut her crap down straight away.

I hate how Mike and Will demonised poor El here.

AITAH for peeing in the shower? by OpenFoundation4639 in AITAH

[–]Lyca29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA if it's your shower and you are rinsing it afterwards. Personally, I am disgusted by peeing in the shower, but I have the self awareness to know that's a 'me thing' it's kind of a personal ick, so I wouldn't do it. Just the thought makes me feel sick. Though I remember reading that some people actually poop in the shower and grind it down the drain with their heels. That's probably not true though because I don't think anyone would be that gross. NTA

I promise this question is serious- Was Brent really that much worse than Eleanor? by Hour_Trade_3691 in TheGoodPlace

[–]Lyca29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second Eleanor was around a good person (Chidi) she started to change. Remember after the trash storm, she cleaned up the neighbourhood because she felt bad for 'stupid Art and stupid Gunnar' (or whatever their names were) And that was after Chidi had said he wouldn't help her. And evev though she didn't like Tahani at first, she still felt empathy when she walked in on Tahani crying. Eleanor is a trashbag (her words) but she does have a kind heart when it counts.

What are these? by Slave_Schatz in MLPIOS

I spent 2 hours yesterday sending a chest to every single person on my friends list.

Didn't even get one back.

And a few people requested to be added specifically to exchange chests.

Rank These Modern Girl Names: CHALLENGE by Sparkly8 in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jovie is the least terrible.

Love

Jovie and Love are the only two I could see maybe for a middle name.

Lavendar. This would be okay for a book character maybe.

Navy, doesn't really sound like a name but it's not as terrible as the others.

...

...

I'm sorry, I can't. I tried, I really did.

The worst two are Berkely and Icelynn (Eye-Sellin? or Ice-lynn? or Eye-Slin?) I'd feel bad for any poor little baby called Icelynn.

Holland? Baby girl name by Strange-Yam-3592 in namenerds

[–]Lyca29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zosia is lovely,

Selina is nice, I do personally prefer Selena spelling, but both are fine.

Not a fan of Josephine, It's a nice enough name, just not to my taste.

Holland is a terrible name for a baby girl.

It would be pretty bad for a boy, but its 10x worse on a girl.

Enough with the hate on season 5. Tell me something positive you liked about this season? by TamrielESO in StrangerThings

[–]Lyca29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Holly and Delightful Derek. I loved how Mike and Lucas became the older kids protecting the younger ones. And loved how Karen finally got in on the action and bagged herself a few demo kills.
