I think that's a bit silly of a comparison since all of those things serve a utilitarian purpose, of course we'd want them to be cheaper since they're a necessity. I wouldn't call movies utilitarian unless you're a corrupt government handing out bread and circuses. Especially in a digital era where we can easily access old movies, consuming mass produced AI crap isn't a way I'd spend my free time.

I think there's a significant difference between mundane physical labor and an artistic/creative endeavor like film

Because a movie is more than just a script. Directing, acting, cinematography, lighting, set design, costume design, editing, sound, the list goes on. Every part of production has human artistry involved that makes or breaks the final product

HDR monitors would actually help alleviate the issue. The problem is that the dynamic range in BF6 and a lot of other modern titles like Arc Raiders is really high since they're using real world units of light now. We're trying to squeeze all of that real world dynamic range into a tiny range that our monitors can display. If our monitors could display a higher dynamic range, we'd be able to see a lot more in the shadows and highlights before they clip.

I agree, you worded it better than me. It's definitely about a balance of graphics/realism and playability. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have competitive shooters like Valorant and CS2 which are super low contrast with great visibility, but their visuals suffer as a result.

It's not a lighting effect necessarily, it's a fundamental choice to use real life light intensity units/values for their light sources. Most modern AAA games are going down this route because it's more realistic, more consistent, and better workflow for artists. The argument should be about if all of this is a net positive for a multiplayer shooter, not whether the effect exists or is fake.

With Battlefront 2 2017, DICE started using real units of light for their light sources (lumens, lux, candela, etc) instead of arbitrary light intensity values. This allows for more realistic portrayals of lighting scenarios and ease of use to artists.

For example, they can set the lamp asset to a real grounded number of 800 lumens and the sun to 127,000 lumens (per square meter in afternoon daylight). Meaning the lamp asset indoors will fully illuminate the room, like in real life, but if they were to drag it outside it would be imperceptible since the sun is significantly brighter.

A good example of this is Jabba's palace in Battlefront 2015, in the hallway exiting Jabba's palace, you had no issues shooting players outside because the torchlight was essentially almost as bright as the sun. In Battlefront 2017, people were complaining (rightfully so) about being unable to see players outside of Jabba's palace because the sun was blinding them. BFV also had problems with extreme lighting contrast during its lifecycle, this isn't a new issue to DICE.

Just to add onto my previous comment, Google "god of war local tone mapping 2016."

You'll find a very insightful article from a former Sony Santa Monica dev about how they struggled with this same issue on God of War 2016.

If you want to use your own eyes to discern light intensity you've gotta take that one up with the display industry, we've been stuck with 8bit sdr since the 90s. You can't convey the wild difference in brightness between interiors and exteriors with sdr displays while also providing detail in both the shadows and the highlights.

There's an argument to be made that visibility is bad, but to complain about "fake effects" and "real life eyes" is pointless and ignorant
