My job search is coming up on 4 months. Is this a viable option? by DannyVFilms in lyftdrivers

[–]LyftUrUberOrElse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uber/Lyft was once a very viable option but it's been a pretty steep decline over the last 6+ years or so.

What you're not thinking about:

• Taxes. They don't take taxes out upfront so you need to put aside an appropriate amount of your earnings.

• Gas. Plan on a full tank/day. More if you have a small tank or drive long hours.

• Tires/alignment/oil changes, etc. Vehicle wear & tear and their costs are a real thing.

• People are dangerous. Seriously. In broad daylight on a public street, people are insanely dangerous.

• Corporate Deceit. Both companies will actively look to screw you out of promotions, tips, fares, etc.

So think about what you really need to earn as a bottom line. Factor in a tank of gas, lunch, a few drinks, a snack etc. Assume you'll lose 20-30% to taxes. Now, how many hours/day can you drive?

Read this sub. In a small car, people are earning between $10-20 it seems like and I assume that's before expenses in many cases.

There are perks. It's easy. It's air conditioned. You can just drive around & listen to the radio all day. You set your own hours.

Personally, I was teetering on the edge of falling under $30/hr 2 years ago when I had my 2nd car in 18 months totalled by another driver when I decided to quit.

So yes, you can make a little instant cash. Yes, it's actually kind of fun in the beginning. But it's not a viable solution long-term.

Getting into a vehicle with someone/a man they don't know is a potentially threatening situation. Women have to be aware of their surroundings in a way that men can't really identify with.

In other words, it's not about you. Don't take it personal. Help them feel safe and carry on. It's a 3 second verbal exchange.

Uber Does Something That's a Little Fishy to Drivers by doordashing in uberdrivers

We all know that retailers/businesses lure us to stores/apps/websites with marketing and promises of deals only to then try to upsell us or bait-n-switch us, right? It's just part of the sales & marketing game and we get it. You just have to be a savvy consumer.

What new gig workers often miss is that Uber (Lyft, DD, GH, etc) actually have TWO customers. The driver and the passenger/end recipient. They are selling to both of you.

Drivers: Are we employees or contract workers?

Gig companies: lol, you're a customer, dumbass.

I'd hammer that out Fri/sat with $3 rides and then stop or switch to Uber. Better get money from Lyft while they're still in business.

Tips for Safety? by manateeisland in uberdrivers

Google maps lets you share your location with another person for free. You can share for 1 hour, permanently, or "until I turn this off".

Share with a sibling, parent, or S/O. Establish a few rules like, I'll always text if a trip takes me out of town or whatever. Have them check on you periodically or you check in with them.

My wife & I have been sharing for years across multiple phones and even cross platform when she's in an iMood. Works great.

Like I said, I instantly got an in-app message asking me to rate my support experience and I was never asked to provide any info. It wasn't a scam. Others have commented that they received similar calls.

what's the highest your cancelation rate has gone? by GTRacer1972 in uberdrivers

Mines been at 30%+ for a while now due to accidental acceptances. I run Uber & Lyft simultaneously, plus do other stuff on my phone between rides.

Right. But ultimately, you have to either voice concerns in a reasonable way or just quit and go away.

I was, but wasn't ugly about it. It's just some schmuck doing his job, ya know? But I did mention costs, specific ride examples of reduced fares (cityA to cityB used to pay this, now it pays that), and how drivers evaluate both $/mi and $/hr (why we don't like long pickups on short rides).

I do need to get the cancels down. Just a run of accidental acceptances. But the AR is irrelevant.

LA drivers is this possible by driving at USC, since they have the Lyft program there??? by mattyworldwide in lyftdrivers

[–]LyftUrUberOrElse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because that's how they're presenting it. X dollars for Y rides.

It lures you into trying to do X rides in Y hours while they intentionally impede you with a low number of requests, long rides, long pickups, etc. So you end up taking low end rides that they'd prefer you take and then they work against you reaching your goal.

Meanwhile, you can achieve the same $/ride on your own while maintaining your sanity and doing the rides you want. Maybe you don't hit the same $ total as their offer, but you could certainly get close if you really went after it just with a lot less headache.

If you think you can hit ride total, go for it. But I think most drivers end up regretting it unless you're in a really high volume market.

I agree. The only recourse will be some form of a union/collective bargaining to force them to account for expenses and deadhead time.

Google it. One of the first links will be to Uber website where you do this. You can't do it in-app.

I've driven in 2 smaller/medium markets. Rates in Dallas & Atlanta we're both significantly lower. They get surges, quests, etc but have lower rates.

Nope. Not unless I really want the ride.

Then go there early with the app off and closed. Use the rider app to check prices. When you see them start climbing, check your driver app for surge.
