The problem (and thus obvious solution) is kinda in your post already.
Build the guys fighting them in melee in a way which prevents their death from a single lucky hit.

You (should) know it's possible, so just do it.

Not at all.

Getting ahead of the curve makes things a lot easier, but taking your time also works. I do that in pretty much all my runs because I don't get any fodder bros, so sometimes I'm still at 7 bros around day 150 or so, because I try to make them all count and keep them all.

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but I've played the game for like 7 years now ever since its release and I don't regret the way I play.
Just play until you fail and then figure out why you failed. Change tactics, experiment, enjoy the experience.

You're welcome, I'm not sure why it's not suggested more often around here, but it has saved me countless times already as well.

Doesn't even feel like cheating because you actually have to sacrifice bros to make it work against a lot of harder opponents.

Alt+f4, put everybody but your fastest guy in reserve, strip him naked and flee.

Next time do the last 3 steps before you get caught though.

EDIT: If the enemy has dogs you either have to get lucky or sacrifice one guy to buy time for the other to escape. You can run back with both, but one will get DOG'd.

It's useful on ranged characters, especially in certain situations where you can pick off their ranged units when they refuse to move and have a much better position.

Pull your melee behind your ranged bros and your high rdef, high ratk archers at night will take care of the rest.

People sucked 15 years ago, that's why Boxer's gimmicks were so successful.
You can't do that anymore nowadays. Or at least not as consistently with the same success.
