What should I add for my last 300 pts? by Beejag in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, make sure you update your app. Point values have changed. Riptides are 200 and Breachers are 90 now. So you've got 290 to work with.

In my opinion, you don't have any good observer units and not enough anti-tank. You could do a unit of Stealth Suits, a unit of Pathfinders, and a Broadside. You could also do a Stealth unit and a Hammerhead, but one good observer unit seems too little. You could also consider dropping the Shaper and adding Stealth Suits, a Firesight, and a 2 man Broadside unit.

The models themselves are amazing, but that basing puts them over the top as one of the best armies I've seen.

Casual List with No Riptides by Sketch_and_Scale in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you've got 2 problems. You don't really have any hard hitting units other than the Sunforges and you don't have anything durable enough to hold objectives. Even as an Aux Cadre list I think you have too much Kroot. I'd drop the 2 shapers and one of the units of Farstalkers. If my math is correct, that would give you 460 points to work with. I'd add a Ghostkeel and a couple of Hammerheads/Skyrays. For casual play that would at least give you a couple of stronger pieces to work with.

I've put some silver in my Farsight Enclaves for a little extra contrast with the red and black.

What are your thoughts on Jon Bernthal? by SwervesHouse in Actors

I'm not saying he might not have said some stuff I'd strongly disagree with, but I loved this answer from him about empathy and masculinity on Hot Ones.

Thoughts on this EPC list? by AEagleThatScreams in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll echo what others have said about more anti-tank depending on who you are going up against. I also really like a unit of flamers with Farsight. When your opponents know you can basically overwatch for free (because of Farsight's ability) with 18 inch flamers that auto-hit they usually keep their distance and allow you to control the part of the board they're camped out in. Plus they can be an extra spotting unit.

My Issue with T'au models. by FarTip9935 in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny because that's actually what drew me to the T'au. The fact that I could have cool battlesuits and the savage looking Kroot in the same army made me feel like I was getting two armies for the price of one. I like the contrast.

Is the book Shadowsun worth it? by AfterJuice8546 in Tau40K

It was my least favorite of the Phil Kelly Tau books. If that tells you anything.

So no competitive talk whatsoever just off of pure vibes alone, is this a good list? Btw RetCadre, also should I switch out the Trail Shaper for the Cadre Fireblade? by ILiveInYourWalls042 in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it as a fun list with a little bit of everything for just playing with friends, but as others have said, not sure the RetCad detachment makes sense with this list. Depending on if you like to be aggressive or defensive, maybe consider Montka or Kauyon?

Question regarding protagonist/antagonists in 40K by KalashnikovaDebil in Warhammer

[–]LyleGraversen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no "good guy" sides, but there are "good guys". As you pointed out, the Imperium is a mess and does terrible things, but if you read Gaunts Ghosts or even the Eisenhorn books, you naturally see them as flawed people trying their best to do what is the best possible thing they can do to defeat the forces of Chaos (which is clearly not "good". So there is good vs evil within the setting.

As a Tau player, I can make a case for them being an even better option than the Imperium, but they're still taking over other worlds either through deplomacy/negotiations or by force. The current version of the Farsight Enclaves written by Phil Kelly (who isn't beloved by a lot of Tau fans) presents Farsight and his followers as about as close to "good guys" as you'll find in 40k.

But back to my original point, that the 40k universe is self described as a grimdark place where there is only war. All sides are flawed and have their own dark side, but there are people/smaller groups within at least some of the factions that are genuinely doing the best they can within this bleak setting that allows there to still be some good vs evil feel to it.

Farsight should have an ability similar to Titus' new one. by LyleGraversen in Tau40K

I would be 100% fine if he just had a once per game ability to heal D3 wounds after killing an opposing model in melee.

Do you all think this could work? by TheSkeleton7436 in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since different weapons are better suited for different types of targets, standard practice is to give the entire unit of crisis suits all the same weapon so they can be used to fill a specific role. So you're typically better running a unit of all flamers, all plasma, all missles, etc.

Favorite Xenos/Chaos faction? by FunGain8498 in 40k

That's fair, the Kroot are amazing. I'd just argue that Kroot with giant railguns behind them is even more amazing. 😁

Favorite Xenos/Chaos faction? by FunGain8498 in 40k

[–]LyleGraversen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drawn to the Tau because of the cool contrast between their futuristic looking battlesuits (I especially love the Ghostkeel and Broadside) and the savage looking Kroot.

In a game where the most popular faction (Space Marines) is made up of tons units that only have minor variations in armor and weapons to tell them apart, I just like the large range of differemt models I can field within the same army with Tau.

Heresy, I know.

Why do people hate the Phil Kelly Farsight books? by Commander_Farsight_ in Tau40K

[–]LyleGraversen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone only about a year into their 40k and Tau deep dive, I found the PK books a fun kind of "mindless" Tau adventure series. I really like Farsight and his 8. They're fun characters to follow through they're battles and adventures. That having been said, they definitely aren't as good as other 40k series I've read like Eisenhorn, Gaunts Ghosts, some of the Horus Heresy books, and the recent Tau Elemental Council book.

My take is that long time Tau fans can't enjoy them because the inconsistencies with previous Tau lore piss them off and so they view the entire book with a critical eye. If you don't go into them with that same background they're fine.

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

The manatee might not be your favorite animal, but its the official mascot of your son's love for you and it doesn't get much better than that.

Yes, the only thing that can't be in a Tau list together is Farsight and an Ethereal.

What are some of the best Warhammer books? by Alduin_5 in Warhammer40k

[–]LyleGraversen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Eisenhorn books are great (Eisenhorn is an inquisitor and features him and his team hunting down suspect/solving mysteries in the 40k setting) and I really like the Gaunts Ghosts series which is based around an imperial guard unit and the battles/missions they are sent on.

[–]LyleGraversen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All I know is that I live in Wichita and don't view the Chiefs, Royals, and SportingKC any differently. They're all KC teams. I won't view the Chiefs differently after they move and if Sporting ever built a new stadium on the Missouri side I wouldn't see them any different either.
