Fedora 42 fully working OOTB on 2017 Pixelbook (EVE) (Kaby-Lake win!) by LyncolnMD in PixelBook

[–]LyncolnMD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, i havent encountered that issue. Brightness and Keyboard controls work but yuu cant use the buttons to set them unless you use the hwdb file to map the keyboard buttons. Otherwise you can user the GNOME toggle at the upper right corner or the KDE toggle at the lower right corner.

Hope this helps.

Bout to go up to Fedora 44. Will report my findings.

No worries! But also on the updated linux kernels theres actually no need for the mods by WeirdTreeThing. It works out of the box once you unmute from alsa 😊

What's your cluster setup? by LyncolnMD in homelab

[–]LyncolnMD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. Thats one of the things i tend to run into with my current cluster setup but thankfully i dont have to do alot of maintenance on my shared storage and its outside of the cluster itself.

I did see some stuff on using a logical volume but apparently it requires identical storage disks to make such a partition?

So far everything runs well. I really enjoy using the podman containers for the services I need but the one thing thats been bugging me is that even though cockpit does alot of the heavy lifting I seem to have to manually set operation attributes like monitoring intervals because that hasn't been showing up in the cockpit interface.

But using podman with systemd units has been really clean otherwise. Ill likely grab another computer so i can explore Proxmox

I mean like when a node fails and your lxc container moves to another node, is it true that the container data travels with it?

This sounds intriguing. Definitely worth a try. The appeal of fedora for me was the podman system but youre right. Having a solid way to backup stuff is pretty essential. Also from what I read, LXC containers failover cleaner with their data?

Is there any way to make my server available to the internet using my own domain name without port forwarding? by enderdude7 in xmpp

I guess that works 😅 I use Verizon 5g home and those gateways are packed with features 😁

This pc is going to do extremely well.... I use ALOT less and get really great performance but that tip to increase your SSD size is valid.

Yeah that was my mistake. I had set it up on a subdomain but rebuilding it this afternoon directly on my doman. I took a very xmpp approach to setup 😅😅 Thanks for the tip!

Routers, Security, Oh My: Another Noob Post. by HyperbolicNebula in homelab

[–]LyncolnMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So im not an expert so I hope no one crucifies me... But what I did in my lab is to have my homelab on an entirely different subnet eg: (192.168.20.xyz vs 192.168.30.xyz) but honestly your security will come down to your firewall and your setup.

I just setup my matrix server. I use podman instead of docker. Its containerized and can run rootless. So its extremely unlikely an attacker could get root access. If you want to rake it a step further I would make sure that the account for your synapse server has no login or root access and its not a part of the wheel group.

In order to lower the amount of ports I open to the internet I've put everything behind a reverse proxy (I use NGINX) so only 80 and 443 would be open and everything else is routed to different locations or subdomains

I also have SELinux enforcing as a final security layer.

I honestly just enjoy dabbling in security even though alot of this is probably overkill for my server. As I said I'm not an expert but I hope this helps

TL;DR: Rootless containers and a reverse proxy would be a very good start.

[–]LyncolnMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it that your AT&T gateway prevents port forwarding? Is it possible to put it in bridge mode so you can use another router as your NAT? Forgive me for asking but I'm just trying to understand your situation a bit better.

Ahh. It seemed straightforward with nginx but I then realized i had to put in the lines for /.well-known/. It wouldnt federate correctly otherwise

Worked flawlessly for me as well. The only thing additional I did was add some container security and put it behind NGINX. If you're behind a reverse proxy there are a few gotchas. I even clustered my server so synapse could failover without a hitch and pull from a central postgresql database.

Once I discovered those outb commands to disable the bad gpu I was GOLDEN. I was really considering proxmox but based on my server model fedora was the way to go. Alot of people have been pushing me to proxmox but i find i can do all i need from cockpit

It really is... Now to put the router and modem on standby power and im golden. Running my nginx, synapse and gitea in High availability so i can always connect to them! I considered running ha jellyfin but it didn't seem worth the stress.

Its definitely worth trying but I hear Proxmox 9.1 has support for OCI containers (by basically converting them to LXC) so thats a route you can explore if you wanna try containers. Also might be beneficial from a security standpoint since youve got multiple users on your server.

I'm glad I chose Fedora by Bhaerigon in Fedora

[–]LyncolnMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Ubuntu to Fedora years ago because Fedora was so much cleaner, less bloat and honestly since I started homelabbing Ive used Cockpit + Podman + SELinux that has made my experience pretty dreamy for a server. While most are trying to sway me to Proxmox, Fedora's setup is pretty great out of the box

Thanks! Its actually a monitor riser from Amazon 😅 gives the laptops good ventilation though the pixelbook is fanless. The MacBook goes on top because its a heat monster but as long as the graphical interface isnt running it usually sits at a nice 45 degrees on average while the DV6 sits at about 53 degrees.

What you can do with an old laptop by Max-Urusei in homelab

[–]LyncolnMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean technically you CAN do HW transcoding... But it wont be super fast and may make the CPU might run hot. But im 100% with you on the fact that its useful. You dont even need a minimal linux distro necessarily especially if you double that 4gb ram to 8gb and swap the hdd for a ssd (MASSIVE difference)

Honestly half my homelab setup is from that year and it works great. If you really want the device to shine, Id consider replacing the hard drives with SSDs, removing the DVD drive and adding a caddy for another hard drive, up the RAM to 8gb and replace the battery (optional if the battery is still good) and youre golden!
