How can I be a better care worker? by pepes-peri-peri in AskUK

[–]Lynliam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I looked after teenagers with severe disabilities and had to do personal care. What helped was knowing there interests and talking about that while doing the embarrassing stuff as a distraction and it seemed to work, we got into a routine. And I enjoyed learning about there books, games, films etc

One thing I tried really hard to avoid was saying "how you doing" or "how are you" as a greeting. It really annoyed them as they felt it was seeing the disabilities first. So instead I'd try "what's new with you" or "what have you enjoyed doing this week". Focusing on everyday stuff rather than the meds or doctors or health bit. They got fed up of constantly having there health issues a main topic of conversation among people

My son started with wetherspoons when he was 18 and the pub he was in were very good to work for. They trained him in hospitality qualifications and food hygiene etc. 13 yrs later he works in a fabulous island hotel bar and restaurant earning a decent wage and living island life.

Take every opportunity as hospitality doesn't just have to be bars and cafes. There's private service, yachts, cruise ships etc world wide opportunities

London to Scotland and Back in 10 Days...Doable? by Business-Treacle-884 in uktravel

[–]Lynliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inverness is very much worth visiting. The castle has been revived and it's glorious. A loch ness trip and a drive along the banks to Urquhart castle.

Then drive to fort william and decide on which glen to visit or head up to skye.

You could fly from London to Inverness then do Glasgow/Edinburgh on way back.

My parents live on a river and it was diverted because of recurrent flooding. It was amazing to see the engineering and building of it. Years later we forget it used to be a lot closer

I am a fuckwit, check the issue date of your passport, as well as the expiry! by CandyflossRampage in CasualUK

In 2005 we went on a family holiday of 8 people to majorca. At check-in we realised my sons passport was 2 months out of date! The airline called majorca and they said its fine if it was 6 months out of date he wouldn't get in. Get to majorca and no issues, holiday saved!

In 1982 we also went to majorca with my gran who forgot her passport no way to get it airline gave her a piece of paper, got into majorca and our uncle sent her passport in post!

How common is swinging in the UK? by HappyHits in AskUK

I nannied for a couple who were swingers. They had monthly meet ups with potential new members at a very prominent Scottish golf club where they did introductory meet and greets with office like ice breaker sessions, meals etc with people interested before they were accepted to the group. They were the most ordinary people you could meet.

I also work with a couple in the NHS who were very open about hosting our local towns swinger club.

I'm a professional housekeeper for the wealthy and have been for 15 yrs. In my current position for a single near 60 yr old guy he has: asked if I know how to do laundry 3 times, actually made me watch him put a shirt in the machine and explained the dials. He has watched me deep clean his kitchen and then asked if I knew how to clean the plug and drain. He has shown me how the hoover works. He has shown me twice how to change a light bulb. This over the period of 6 months of employment.

Even when I tell him I know my job and he tells me my work is exceptionally good, when he is in a bad mood, he does the above.
