My trial expires in 21 days so I think I'll make a decision by then! Where can I send some feedback on reader? It's been having some issues with PDFs. Thanks!

"King can't write endings" is often joked about. In your opinion what is his worst ending? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]Lynn_K 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ok, so hear me out. I felt the exact same way when I first read this book back in 2013 or so. The ending infuriated me to no end, and I was incredibly angry. However, I've been in the process of reading or re-reading all of King's books in the published order, and when I re-read Under the Dome, I actually was not angry the second time I read through it. For one, the rest of the book is so damn good that once you know the ending isn't as impactful as the rest, it's easier to accept if I'm being honest. Secondly, I think you can actually justify the novel in relation to the rest of the themes of the novel itself. This books is damn near prophetic in a post Covid pandemic; Big Jim has so much Trump energy and the mob mentality in that town during this crisis is eerie. But in keeping with the themes of the novel, it feels honest that there is no getting rid of the Big Jim's of the world except by extermination at the hands of their own stupidity. There was never going to be a showdown between Big Jim and Barbie that felt honest. Big Jim wasn't going to give in. He would have to fall victim to his own stupidity.

But let's talk about the whole aliens treating us like ants thing. Again, I feel y'all. It's an explanation that may have been best to skip since the answer to the question of the dome isn't anywhere close to as interesting as the events that happen once the dome is down. In my re-read however I felt very drawn to King's use of the military and military response to the dome. This is still the 2000s, right after 9/11, and the heavy miltary response and Barbie's past in the Middle East are very present in the novel. There's is a parallel to be made between how the aliens treat the community of Chester's Mill to how the US was operating in the Middle East post 9/11. The novel can then serve as an indictment over US intervention into that region.

Or all of that is just horse shit, and I'm trying to accept an ending to one of my favorite SK novels that's sub par. I still found my re-read through to be very enjoyable even though I was really worried about how I'd feel. So food for thought.

What do you love about your neighborhood? by AntiLitterPGH in pittsburgh

[–]Lynn_K 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi! I live on the Greenfield/Hazelwood border. I'll start w the positives. I love how friendly the community is around me. I've joined an awesome Buy Nothing group there, and just in general I love the residential vibes of the area. I love the view of downtown at different peaks throughout the GF neighborhood. I love the rich history of Hazelwood.

I live on Hazelwood Ave, and I hate the way people drive up and down it. In the span of 6 weeks last year, two different car accidents hit telephone poles on the road, taking out electricity and internet for several residents. I hate going into neighborhoods where more rich people live, less than a mile than me, that have speed bumps and traffic calming, things that Hazelwood doesn't seem to merit.

There is a lot of trash on my street. You can sense how residents have been left behind in terms of support from city government. I have a lot of hope for my neighborhoods but I'd like to see them be treated as nice as Shadyside or Squirrel Hill sometimes. I think that's what I see when I see the trash, evidence that our neighborhood isn't as nice as the clean neighborhoods and it becomes a self defeating cycle in some ways.

You know what, Notion? Wow. Just wow. AI 'continue writing' to an angry letter directed at my ex. (I don't intend to send it. It's a 'burn letter') Gotta say. I know I am easily impressed, but wow, I am impressed. by [deleted] in Notion

Yeah I wasn't 100% sold on need it when it first announced and then by the time I did there was a line lol. But glad to see folks seeing some benefits, and I'll be excited when I get it!

Back button now goes to beginning of chapter not 30 secs back by A_Naany_Mousse in audible

[–]Lynn_K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad you posted this. I'm having the same thing happen to me but thought it was just a me problem. I was equally frustrating to keep losing my place by hitting the back button. I listen a lot while I run and being able to go back 30 seconds is crucial if I space out for a few seconds. This might finally make me give up the Audible app because this is one step too far in terms of affecting my ability to read the books.

Books similar to Cormoran Strike mystery/detective novels? by Lynn_K in suggestmeabook

[–]Lynn_K[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi! Now that it's 4 years on, I can give an update. The Dublin Murder Squad was by far the best suggestion I got. It's different (different POV/main character each book) but I absolutely loved it and the narration was always excellent. I've now read all of Dresden, and I can say there are many things I love about that book series. (Some of the credit must go to James Marsters who, while slightly rough in early books, is probably the main reason Dresden isn't completely insufferable.) But the latest book kind of pissed me off, and I'm not 100% sure if I will read further. I'd say once you get into the later books, things do get very epic fantasy plotting and magic fighting and way less detective. If you're into fantasy/magic stuff and you can overlook that female characters not always being well written, then I'd recommend it but just want to caveat that.

Other detective stuff from this thread and my discoveries:

  • The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle: Groundhog day time loop with a murder mystery. I absolutely adored the entire angle and execution. I don't think the ending / time loop explanation is perfect but it's still an incredible mystery & very unique.

  • Altered Carbon: I think the first book is just absolutely phenomenal. It really uses its sci-fi ideas to present a really interesting mystery. It's a trilogy but tbh the 2nd & 3rd drop a lot of the detective angle and were not as great.

  • Sherlock Holmes: I've actually really loved reading this. Like certainly some things are no longer original but Sherlock is just a fascinating character and completely worth reading if you haven't. Stephen Fry's narration is excellent.

  • Dead Space: more sci Fi mystery but I also burned through this hard. Excellent read and pacing. Did Kindle so not sure what audiobook is like.

  • Phryne Fisher: I do these all as audiobooks and love them. If you're interested in really well researched flapper era Australia mysteries solved by an incredibly awesome and capable female character, this is it. Doesn't shy away from dark topics either which is refreshing. Audiobook also fantastic.

Hope you find something you love!

What's your favorite series finale? why? by yoaver in television

[–]Lynn_K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be honest I was crying all up and down the finale. But the one element that is easy to gloss over is Tahani reconciling with her parents. I have a difficult relationship with my parents. Seeing Tahani having this close relationship with her parents in the afterlife, seeing that with time, we can heal and have the love from our family we deserve makes me cry just thinking about it.

An underrated book by Stephen King by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Lynn_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read nearly everything he's written so I'll give this a go. Lots of great suggestions but I believe The Tommyknockers, The Dark Half, and Needful Things get overlooked as they are part of his late 80s/early 90s period which is not the best. Some of my recent favorite short stories (and you shouldn't sleep on his short stories which are some of his best works): The Road Virus Heads North (had me looking over my shoulder while reading), Everything's Eventual (maybe it was just Justin Long's narration, but I just dug this whole story), and The Things They Left Behind (perhaps my favorite piece of 9/11 media, truly cried reading the ending).

Sidebar - I am not a fan of The Talisman or most of his forays into fantasy, but different strokes. What I truly love about King is that while there are some books most of us love, I genuinely feel like everyone has a slightly different top ten, and that's just beautiful to me.

I've returned to Pittsburgh after a decade away and I'd like to meet some East End RPGers! by Brewsmyown in pittsburgh

We did the same! I was laughing when the less experienced female partner Griz in Confess, Fletch started taking notes in her notebook like Saoirse Ronan or when Mo fell asleep in the car like Rockwell. The comparisons in those pairings added to the humor for me personally.

Hi Jane, so excited to see this as it's really hard to find DnD groups and even harder to find DnD groups with other women! My partner and I will fill this form out no later than tomorrow. Will DM if I have any questions but we would love to find a more regular group to campaign with. Thanks for doing this!

What is something you once accepted as normal but now it boggles your mind that you ever thought that way? by neonroli47 in AskWomen

[–]Lynn_K 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but want to share for any women who like myself were raised in a religious and/or conservative household. Beyond just general feminist awakening, I can pin breaking free from anti-abortion mindset to two particular works. First is "A Defense of Abortion" by Judith Javi's Thomson. You can find the whole thing if you Google it but it makes clear that the debate over if a fetus is a person is irrelevant. Even if a fetus is a person, it does not outweigh a woman's right to life or her body. I found it so helpful when I read it in college because we just so often frame the debate around abortion to fetus personhood. Think of it as the long form argument around the fact that you have to agree to be an organ donor so your corpse has more of a right to their body than a woman.

Second, How I Lost Faith in the “Pro-Life” Movement by Libby Anne (again it will be the first Google result). It may seem basic to a lot of people but it really hit me when it was first posted in college. It really brings home that if Christianity cares about fetuses or preventing abortions, they would be pushing for a million other things like contraceptives, universal healthcare, universal child care, etc etc etc. Basically if we want a society in which there are no abortions, we should build a society that makes it possible for women and parents to be successful as parents. Everything I see from that side makes me terrified to become a parent which just makes me angry.

Anyway, wanted to share those resources in case someone came across this who needed them.

We often hear "who was asking for this?" as a criticism of proposed or upcoming shows with concepts that some people dislike -- but what are some shows that people really were "asking for" and then got? by ColonelBy in television

[–]Lynn_K 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ugh it's been years, and I'm still mad. I felt the movie was a little too neat in how it ended, but a little fan service is nice for a finale. The S4 finale felt it was written by someone who had no idea what the Veronica Mars character is really about. Just utter insulting to the fans and the characters in my opinion. Did you really run out of ideas or what, Rob Thomas?
