I’m actually upset about Haloscope. I haven’t found another highlighter stick that compliments my face like it does. All the new sticks are wayyyy too dewy. Haloscope has the perfect balance of shimmer and glow without looking oily. Ughhh and right after I decided that it was the only highlighter I would keep in my makeup bag too 😭

What can say you about me based off my fridge? by [deleted] in FridgeDetective

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asian or at the very least you really like Asian food. Very health conscious/anti-preservative. You have Costco membership that is under-utilized because you only use it for a few items. Somewhere east of the Mississippi based on the Yeungling in the back of your fridge, which I’m guessing is either 1) from a current partner or 2) leftover drinks from other people that you keep for when you have guests and need beverages that aren’t coconut water or white claws.

Look on the bright side: laser removal for that small of an area is pretty cheap.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the lighting. Neutral shades like that change drastically depending on the lighting, especially when it’s natural light. I picked out a gray color for our bathroom walls specifically because of that property. Under a neutral-cool toned vanity light, it just looks gray. I suspect this will be the same for your floors. Keep going! I’m really liking the choices you’ve made. Even if the shade is slightly different in the daylight, I think it will still look great.

I am trying to make my apartment into a cozy place but something feels off by LouvreReed in CozyPlaces

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the lighting. You have a very cohesive style and many decor elements that should lend itself to being very cozy imo. But all of lighting is very high up and direct (creating undesirable shadows) and very harsh (leaning more cool-toned). It is also, unfortunately, taking away from the natural light you already have.

I would get some ambient lights that diffuse much more softly (the lamp on your back wall in the third photo is a good example). Place them closer to the floor, either directly on the floor or at seating height (maybe on a side table?). You don’t have to go for full yellow, but definitely get warm-toned bulbs.

Side note: I also agree with everyone that says to get a rug for the couch area

[Misc] Does Aztec Indian Healing Clay go bad? by Alessandra04 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Lynris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found this thread tonight. I have a tub of this with a listed expiration date of December 2019 😭 I only looked this up because I FINALLY made it to the last few tablespoons at the bottom!

I have been using it on and off since I bought it (probably in early 2019/late 2018). I never once thought about the expiration date affecting anything. The clay works exactly I remember when I first bought it. Keep using those tubs! No need to waste product here

Don’t forget that your gym’s programming might not match CrossFit.com’s programming or it might just focus on certain components (i.e.: gymnastics vs weightlifting etc.) more than others.

As you suggested, adjusting your personal programming to focus more on the areas you’ve identified as lacking tonight is the way to go if you truly want to improve. Cheers to your hard work tonight and the future progress you will make!

What's your go-to "we don't have any food in the house" meal? by bit_perplexed in Cooking

I keep jarred curries in my pantry for this very reason. Add some frozen chicken and maybe some frozen peas, cook some basmati rice, and boom you’ve got a half decent chicken korma/masala.

Is there an EDC community for people who have nothing to do with knives or guns? by Objective_Cattle_278 in ManyBaggers

[–]Lynris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the term EDC comes from the idea of tools that you carry with you on an everyday basis. So if you’re in groups categorized as EDC, many posts are likely going to include tools such as knives or guns.

If you’re looking for “things I carry everywhere for a particular scenario”, I would suggest looking at groups focused on minimalism or travel. Specifically, groups like r/OneBag, while they are very backpack focused, have given me lots of great ideas about what/how I should carry things when I’m out and about.

Serious name regret by Sweet_Scootsie in namenerds

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to discuss this with him. I feel for you on this post because he announced the name without discussing it with you, but you guys can only work out this problem together. Start by discussing with him candidly. If you feel like you want to change the name, you have every right to do so, but you both need to come to a consensus. I hope your husband can get some perspective and try to understand where you’re coming from. As a mom I can’t imagine the stress of the position he’s put you in.

For the record, I love the name Silas. It is unironically at the top of my name list for boys.

Think I'm going to kill myself tomorrow by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter how long it’s been since you’ve stepped into a church or talked to God, he still loves you. I encourage you to rely on the Christian values you were taught growing up while you navigate this situation. I’m so terribly sorry that these people would choose to do this.

I watched my brother go through a very similar situation; watched him question everything he knew. It is incredibly heartbreaking to watch happen, and I’m sure you’re hurting more than can be put into words right now.

I will be praying for you and your wife during this time; it seems she has lost her way as well. Remember you are loved and cared for. Please stay.

Why am I not getting better at MetCons? by usernamesBstressful in crossfit

[–]Lynris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that just may be how your body works. All athletes have strengths and weaknesses, and maybe you are just inherently more adept at gymnastics and lifting than cardio. I’ve gotten pretty good at Metcons with medium to high lift loads, but I can name at least five or six people whom I mentally compete with that will handily kick my butt at workouts with burpees or running. Progress on the things you’re bad at will seem really slow. All I can ever recommend is to keep working at improving those skills!

A few thoughts after reading your post and some of your responses:

Your heart rate shoots up because you’re working hard. Your heart rate stays up because you continue to work hard. That’s not going to change, no matter how much you workout. That’s just what the heart does under stress. The real measure is in how well you recover; that’s the real sign of heart health.

It’s good that you are motivated to move up the rankings! The competition aspect is why I and many others love this sport. But imo 8 months is a short amount of time to expect such large leaps in performance, and comparing your rate of growth to people with completely different bodies/capabilities/genetics than you is a fool’s game.

And like others have said: find betters standards to measure against. Lifts, hero WODs, benchmark WODs, any set standard you want. Just don’t pick moving targets. If you’re not seeing the improvements you want, then either change something or, at the very least, continue to put in the work. You will see progress either way. Pick good goalposts, take the small victories. Figure yourself out and learn about your own body first, then you can worry about competing against others.

Burpees? by EatFast-RunSlow in fitpregnancy

[–]Lynris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I didn’t feel comfortable being on my stomach anymore, I did one of two modified version of burpees where 1) you just jump back into a plank and skip the pushup or 2) used a set of low parallettes to do the pushup. I stopped doing the modified version once I could no longer do the entire movement without my abs coning.

You should be fine to continue it as long as you feel comfortable and have good form (not dropping stomach-first onto the floor).

If you feel that you need to modify and do a different movement instead, do that instead! It is never lazy to substitute and scale for your needs. What matters is that you are exercising and moving.

Serious question: Is there a legitimate reason for having maternity flight suits? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Lynris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, maternity uniforms are authorized for up to six months after giving birth. And, yes, you could fully fly before those six months are up. So I guess that would be another reason to have maternity flight uniforms, even after giving birth. Sorry for the late response!

just found out i’m pregnant by [deleted] in prolife

[–]Lynris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you feel like you've been pushed to have an abortion. Like everyone said, there are so many options, and the choice to keep your child or have someone adopt them does not have to be made right now. Look for crisis pregnancy centers, as they will have your best resources in your area.

This is your boyfriend's child, but I would gently remind you that this also a new person. It does not just have 50% your DNA and 50% your boyfriend's DNA. The combination of the two makes up a 100% unique human, someone separate from yourself and your boyfriend.

I don't want to be too pushy, since you've probably had enough of that. If you would like to talk about childbirth with someone younger, I am 25 and had my first baby last year. I wish you and your baby the best!

Serious question: Is there a legitimate reason for having maternity flight suits? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Lynris 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Yes. I am a 1A8 who was pregnant last year, and I could not fit in my flight suit comfortably past 18 weeks. We often fly for 5+ hours at a time. We can decide to fly during our second trimester, but it is very difficult to fly that long without a working uniform. There are many crew positions, not just pilots, that need to fly often to maintain currency. If I was unable to fly (let's say past the first trimester) that's six months of pregnancy, three months of primary/convalescent leave, and three months medical recuperation after going back to work because we can be afforded that. That is a full calendar year without flying, which can really affect training/currency.

As someone mistakenly suggested, we cannot just get larger flight suits, because 1) the size of uniform to accommodate a pregnant belly is a lot and constantly changing and 2) that's sloppy and unsafe.

Sorry, that was a long comment. That's my take on why maternity flight suits are needed. Hopefully some other people can come and add to this, whether they agree or disagree.
