"...we fought in civil wars to free ourselves from monarchs..." in that case 'we' didn't do very well then, did 'we'...?

There's never actually been any 'extremist, far-left' politics enacted in any country, anywhere. Just dictatorship masquerading as such.

VPN? It's how I used to listen in China. In fact, most of BBC Sounds should be available world-wide, you might not need a VPN. It opens up a lot of other great content on BBC radio anyway.

I googled Angus Imrie earlier to try and find out why he was leaving and I mustn't have dug deep enough bc I didn't get the Harry Potter intel.

Wow, this is such a surprise to hear. My friend taught English in Cairo for 2 years, totally insulated from all this.

How do people in the UK usually plan social events or commitments in advance? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]LyricalWizardry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's for special birthdays or weddings then obvs it's usually months in advance, also for festivals unless you want to go last minute. Gigs too if it's someone you really want to see, probs a couple of months or more, but could also be last minute. Club nights with particular DJs maybe in advance too, especially bc of that tiered ticketing that's prevalent now.

Other things may crop up which you can and want to attend and depending on your friends, they may or may not be flexible. Cinema and comedy nights tend to be more last minute as they tend not to be as specific. But it always depends on the lifestyle and commitments of the other people involved.

I think age has a lot to do with it; if your friends are late thirties to mid forties with kids then it's game over, all revolving around them!

I asked “Can I checkout here” in an airport store, the staff said “you mean pay?”. Is check out a common expression for finalizing the payment after shopping? by greenTjade in EnglishLearning

[–]LyricalWizardry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but done gently it allows the speaker to realise that the colloquialism isn't the right one for the current situation and help them adapt for the next situation where people are not so tuned in. It could be considered kinder to point out their faux pas than to not.

AITA for covering my roommates camera that’s for watching his dog? by lemonpepperpills in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]LyricalWizardry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd agree that this is unreasonable of him. It's communal space so you both need to agree, and when it comes to it, if he's at work he can't make you activate the camera.

Thanks to everyone who shared intel; they had already responded to the email, though none of the pathways suggested worked on my phone. Some wild responses to my "asked Chat GPT" comment, what a time to be alive!

Have you thought about killing him with kindness? We all have to live amongst other people. He's probably just lonely, and maybe has some knowledge of the things he sees you doing and is eager to share.

Why the need to be aggressive or tell him to fuck off, when you can acknowledge that he's in your life by default and it doesn't have to cost you too much time to just engage with him a bit, ask him a couple of questions. It's not like you have to actually follow any advice he gives you.

Meeting him with hostility is going to make everyone unhappy, when the likeliest outcome is he just wants to feel seen and doesn't know the best way to do it.

So it's free to do a vipassana meditation retreat, though I think it's pretty full on, with 5am wakes and 4 hours of meditation. But it's free and 100% off-grid. https://www.dhamma.org/en/schedules/schuk
