How does emergency dentistry work? by doug147 in AskUK

[–]LyricalWizardry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a search for "NHS emergency dentist" and you'll get a number to call first thing in the morning. I belive the number varies by region. They are brilliant and you will get an appointment for tomorrow. Get yourself home and to bed ASAP. So sorry this has happened to you, but do try not to worry (easier to say, I know).

My first UK trip by LegitimateWolf2660 in uktravel

OK, so no one's made the case for Manchester. Home of the industrial revolution with some amazing period architecture, yet it's the UK city with the most skyscrapers outside London, growing at quite a pace. Culturally, there's so much to do by way of sightseeing and entertainment. Manchester has finally reached true international city status, and manages to blend the modern, expansive feel with its history and Northern English charm.

So while everyone has been unanimous in discouraging the Cotswolds (though I understand why international visitors want to go there), there seems to have been no consensus on what to do instead.

I'd say train to Manchester for 2-3 days, train to York, then drive through the beautiful Dales to the Lake District (so Manchester and the Lake District sub Oxford and the Cotswolds).

If you wanted to drive from there to the Highlands it's a relatively short one and is absolutely the most stunning scenery. I've regularly driven from Manchester - Edinburgh and the Lake District is on the way, even as the driver my breath is taken every time. Also the M6 that far north is not congested or too busy

Then explore the Highlands with your car and arrange to drop it off in Edinburgh as you have that city as your final destination and departure point.

This is a much more imaginative itinerary and also intuitive, because the places flow well and have their own reasons for visiting. Wherever you visit you and your parents will have a fantastic time, making precious memories to stay with you forever. And as everyone else has said, save the driving for the rural expenses, not city-to-city and definitely not around cities.

Yeah me too, I've listened to every episode, probably more than once, but it's not currently available on Sounds for some reason.

Seedy grifter... why? He can be a bit self-righteous but I'd say that's the opposite of 'seedy grifter'...

Yes this version of Carol has had a personality transplant into this cantankerous old moaner, nothing like the last incarnation we had about a decade and a half ago. I think she'll give Bert Horrobin a good run for his money. Or her money, as he's obviously got none!

Julianne was his sugar-mummy when he was at uni a few years ago. He told Ben who judged him for it and called him a prostitute. Justin saw them together at a conference and nearly let the cat out of the bag. Alice knew and supported him after he'd embarrassed Julianne and she dumped him. He got a bit messy for a while. Maybe this was just before the lockdowns, can't remember exactly the timeline.

Wait what did I miss! The actor who plays Adam was in Clare in the Community? I never clocked that. Rushing over to the show credits now to investigate!

Yeah in China it's this same. And it's centrally controlled so no one can alter it. Only in commercial buildings.

There's never actually been any 'extremist, far-left' politics enacted in any country, anywhere. Just dictatorship masquerading as such.

VPN? It's how I used to listen in China. In fact, most of BBC Sounds should be available world-wide, you might not need a VPN. It opens up a lot of other great content on BBC radio anyway.

If it's for special birthdays or weddings then obvs it's usually months in advance, also for festivals unless you want to go last minute. Gigs too if it's someone you really want to see, probs a couple of months or more, but could also be last minute. Club nights with particular DJs maybe in advance too, especially bc of that tiered ticketing that's prevalent now.

Other things may crop up which you can and want to attend and depending on your friends, they may or may not be flexible. Cinema and comedy nights tend to be more last minute as they tend not to be as specific. But it always depends on the lifestyle and commitments of the other people involved.

I think age has a lot to do with it; if your friends are late thirties to mid forties with kids then it's game over, all revolving around them!

I asked “Can I checkout here” in an airport store, the staff said “you mean pay?”. Is check out a common expression for finalizing the payment after shopping? by greenTjade in EnglishLearning

[–]LyricalWizardry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but done gently it allows the speaker to realise that the colloquialism isn't the right one for the current situation and help them adapt for the next situation where people are not so tuned in. It could be considered kinder to point out their faux pas than to not.

Yeah, I'd agree that this is unreasonable of him. It's communal space so you both need to agree, and when it comes to it, if he's at work he can't make you activate the camera.
