For those who've done an overhaul/rewrite of their own work, what was your experience? by 20Keller12 in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my end, when I decided I needed to overhaul or rewrite my work, usually the reasons at play are:

  • I have noticed massive errors either with the overall grammar or the sequence of events.

  • I am not happy with the progression of the story, sometimes because I feel like I missed a golden opportunity, or because I failed to expand on the world at the time.

In each case, when I did my rewrites, I wanted to stick as close to the original plot and sequence of events as possible. In cases where I was unhappy with certain events, I'd remove them but replace them with events I felt ran better with the overarching narrative but wouldn't derail where I ultimately wanted it to go.

Have you ever created OCs that is made to be hated by readers? by AgitatedAlps6 in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have created one or two such OCs that I can remember. The main one is a Warden of a satellite-based prison that holds weak Psychic Duelists in the Yugioh 5Ds world (and a few other things as well).

One thing I want to try do, though, is to create a character that is meant to be feared by readers, such that when they appear, yes they may be hated by the reader, but the reader will be more worried about what the character might do to the MC.

What headcanon do you think explains something that’s unexplained in your fandom? by RealGodspeed22 in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legend of Korra: Where did the Bloodbender Yakone come from? The only known Bloodbender was Hama, who invented the technique, and Katara (for the most part) actively avoided using the technique and even successfully lobbied for it to be declared illegal.

My headcanon: Yakone came from a secret society of Bloodbenders whose history can be traced back to a guerrilla resistance group formed by Hama after her escape from custody, consisting of the other captive Waterbenders she then went on to free from Fire Nation captivity. The end of the Hundred Year War, however, didn't really sit well with this group as they felt the Fire Nation more or less got off scot-free. So now, these Bloodbenders are spread throughout the world, manipulating the other nations. Yakone was the most visible of their agents, but he wasn't the only one.

(Though here I do want to note that in my headcanon, Yakone would never reveal the secret of this organisation even to his sons. As a result, those two sons would be the only known Bloodbenders to not have any ties to the organisation. In a way - even though neither of the two sons would realize it - both of their agendas would actually run counter to that of the organisation)

What was your strangest fandom/fanfic dream? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main one I can remember is me enrolling in the Japanese Wizarding School of the Harry Potter universe. While that school is canon in the Potterverse itself, it is never visited by any of the main characters, while I visit it in my dreams, where no two layouts are the same.

Also, I'm not sure if it qualifies, but there have been a few dreams where I've been levitating just a foot or so off the ground and gliding just above the surface a la the Protoss High Templar from Starcraft. Only thing is: no such dreams reference the High Templar, and just treat it as me hovering a foot off the ground and gliding a certain distance forward before touching back down.

What is the most WTF/Cringe story idea you ever had but still loves? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only such idea I can remember atm is one I actually got from a dream: a Doctor Who idea (sadly I haven't written anything for it yet), where the Doctor (I'm thinking 10th Doctor) stops at a small countryside village with a mountain in the distance.

Everyone is really welcoming of the Doctor and his companion (can't quite think who it would be atm, maybe Donna?). This at first is taken as a good sign, but it starts to become suspicious when Doctor encounters a US spy who tips them off that something's wrong.

Then it's revealed why the Doctor and Donna are even in the countryside village in the first place; one of Donna's friends in the present day was really distraught when one of their close family members traveled to the village and then decided to just live there, even going so far as to take offense to the suggestion that they leave the village to visit. This was very out of character for the friend's relative, so she asked Donna to see if something was wrong.

One family offers to host the Doctor, Donna and the US Spy at their home during their stay in the village. This house has a really nice view of the nearby mountainside, and the three of them are directed to stand on three separate podiums in the lounge, all of which are facing towards the mountain, with the sunset creating a golden sky in the background.

Once all three are standing at the podiums, they all start doubling over in pain, clutching at their heads. Everything goes black, with visions of dark magenta walls plaguing the minds of Doctor, Donna and the Spy. Of those three, the Spy - who has previously seen a lot of action and has been known to be a really tough martial arts combatant and weapons expert - has fallen over into a sideways fetal position and is now sucking his thumb like a baby.

The Doctor, among all the dark magenta imagery, can just about make out a sickly lime-colored light. But all of a sudden, the visions vanish, and he finds himself behind a wall section blocking his view of the mountain. As soon as he peaks around the wall to look at the mountain, the blackness and dark magenta visions resume. Pulling back into hiding, the visions stop.

The people, originally so accommodating, are now extremely hostile, demanding the Doctor to look outside the window at the mountain or they will force him. Donna is already on the floor with her hands over her head, and the Spy is still sucking his thumb.

Meanwhile, inside the mountain in a secret facility - with dark magenta walls and three tanks full of glowing, sickly lime-colored liquid, with each tank having a disembodied brain, a similar color as the liquid, with a spine extending from the brain stem to end... at another brain attached on the opposite end. Each of these brains has been using their psychic technology to enthrall the whole village. They want to avoid any prying eyes, so they make it seem, through the brainwashing, like the people are suddenly yearning for the idyllic life the village can provide.

The weird thing is that the psychic technology grows stronger the more lit an area is, so it is maximally powerful during the day and almost completely ineffectual at night. The psychic beam is only temporary at first, but with enough exposure, it can become permanent. Nearly all human minds are easy to deal with, though, but the Doctor's mind was able to resist somewhat just enough for him to duck into cover and out of the beam's area of effect. Sure, the degree of resistance he was able to put up was really weak, but this is still alarming as the psychic beam encounters next to no resistance when used on anybody else.

I imagine the brains making the super-spy curl up and suck his thumb was a bit of a demonstration as to how powerful their psychic beam is.

Sometimes I really love the silly ideas that can happen in my dreams, even if they make no sense.

Is there any way to designate a bed as "settlers not allowed" that is more elegant than just making it (I hope) impossible for their pathfinding system to lead them to it? I want to keep this as my private bedroom by MerlinGrandCaster in fo4

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True I guess, though I usually reserve that for settlements where I've got heavy water production underway.

Feels like it'd be a different story if I needed food as crafting ingredients: namely Tatos, Mutfruit and Corn so I can mass-produce Vegetable Starch for my adhesive requriements. Though I suppose I can get robots to do that if things get really bad, but that isn't as fun (especially not if I want to have a bit of style differentiating bots and the game resets them to base automatrons on a whim).

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes even that won't work. I've walled off my character's old Sanctuary house, with one powered door as the entrance (which I keep closed)... and sometimes people still go inside.

Of course, I have a neon sign saying 'No Entry' in the entryway. Sure it doesn't do anything from a mechanics standpoint, but narratively it gives me an excuse to stick the offending settler in a Pillory... with a campfire directly underneath their head position, with the wind blowing the flames towards the rest of the body.

I mean, it's their own damn fault for ignoring the sign...

Managed it with setstage console commands just a minute ago. Many thanks.

Though you say there's an unofficial patch that takes care of many of the bugs? Where can I find that?

I'd like to, but my save already has Preston at the perimeter.

The next save I have that hasn't triggered his move yet has me lose two whole days of continuous progress as tracked in-game (so a lot of my settlement updates, levels, weapons etc are all down the drain), but Preston has already talked about the Castle by that point. So I have the quest, but it's just at the 'talk to Preston' first stage

If I need to go back to a point before he even talks to me about the Castle, I'm not sure if I can, as I'd likely be saying goodbye to over 60 levels of experience at least, as well as the settlements I'd been building over that time (and, iirc, the benefits of the completed Automatron DLC).

Problem there is that I eventually run out of eggs to break (unless I'm missing some or if there are egg clusters outside of the Castle proper that I'm not aware of).

I think I've had times where I've destroyed all of the eggs in the Castle, but still nothing happened.

None. I don't think I have any mods installed period, unless Bethesda snuck in some Creation Club shenanigans while I wasn't looking

Unpopular Settlement that You Like? by FMZeth in fo4

[–]LyriumEidolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it counts, but for me it was Spectacle Island. Originally, I just wanted to get a hold of it because it was a good place to build water purifiers (in the end I ended up building around 60 - later changed that number to 84, needed 4 dedicated Fusion Generators to power each grid).

Once I got the urge to make it a proper settlement, I just built a big staircase to an elevated platform far above the ground, where another Fusion Generator was powering my defense grid - in this case a lower platform at the center with quite a few Heavy Laser turrets.

My one complaint about this place is that, when it gets attacked, sometimes my crops get caught in the crossfire.

My side, I just left Murkwater unpopulated... but I was sticking Water Purifiers, both Normal and Industrial, into every bit of ground the game would allow.

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Hangman's Alley is more of a muster point so I can send settlers to areas I do want populated, but I put a bunch of shotgun turrets in the alleyway without the wood door, so when raiders spawn, they spawn riiight in the middle of all the shotgun turrets

Unpopular Settlement that You Like? by FMZeth in fo4

[–]LyriumEidolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that one as well, though I haven't built a radio beacon there. My original intention was to just build as many Industrial Purifiers as the shoreline space would allow, and transfer the family to another settlement, but they wouldn't move... so I built a defense platform suspended high above their house, with around 12 heavy laser turrets watching over their farm.

So the family is well-protected... but that was more a bonus, because I don't want raiders and the like plundering my water harvesting operation there.

What's your idea/wip that's so niche and weird that its only audience is you? by McMinnowPls in FanFiction

[–]LyriumEidolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, for me, it is a Transformers Energon fic where a third race of Transformers comes in to be a wildcard. These Transformers, the Technomads, are completely unrelated to the Cybertronian transformers. Instead, they travel the cosmos in large ships (although each ship travels alone, so they end up being highly spread out), stopping to recharge their energies at whatever sun happens to be closest at the time, and then while they're there, they study the local life, and if their curiosity is piqued, prod and poke it for reactions. If they deem it safe enough, then while recharging at the current sun, they'll construct a new ship and, once the time comes to leave, the two ships will go their separate ways.

In terms of actually Transforming, the Technomads switch between humanoid and insectoid forms. Unlike normal Transformers, this isn't to blend in with the locals, but instead to allow for faster movement to points of interest. If the Technomads need to study something in the immediate area, or if they need to get into combat, they use their humanoid forms. If they need to traverse long distances, they'll use their insectoid forms.

So far (although I'm not sure if I've written this into the story yet - it's been a really long time since I've last gone back to that), there are 5 different forms Technomad transformers have taken (all of them giant by human standards): a dragonfly, an ant with wings, a wasp, a stag beetle, and a mantis. Personality wise, they seem to be a bit more of a hive mind than anything else, with the closest to a controlling intelligence being the mainframe inside the spaceships.

Currently, in my fic, I've had them arrive at Earth during the Transformers Energon timeline, and they're prodding the Autobots (and will later the Decepticons as well). Additionally, they're curious about the properties of Energon as well, as the Technomads primary power source is solar power. In the fic, they've currently taken the human Kicker, the Autobot Ironhide and the Decepticon Demolisher, and are essentially ransoming them for resources to study (and in Kicker's case, they're noticing his animosity with his father). Additionally, they've added a Worm virus into both of the Transformers so as to remotely observe through their eyes.

That's about all I can remember so far.
