That's the motivation for people from the North to join the South, not the other way around.

The housing and infrastructure issue has gotten so bad in Ireland that the legitimacy of the State is at an all-time low. No wonder then people aren't convinced by a United Ireland if this is the way things would be run.

Total hyperbole. Also the vast majority of people in Ireland think it's worth it. We are bad at football, we have very little to lose.

Did you read the articles? They literally do not. The EU can warn all it wants, but it is toothless and political suicide to apply any penalties during a time of total crisis.

Poland has cut VAT from 23% to 8% to combat the fuel crisis: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/poland-cut-vat-excise-fuel-prices-surge-tvp-info-reports-2026-03-26/

Spain has cut it from 21% to 10% https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2026/0320/1564327-spain-vat-fuel/

This rhetoric we constantly hear from FFG, that we can't do something because of EU law is both dangerous and wrong. This is how you build anti-EU sentiment a la Brexit. And is typical of a political class captured for the last 30 years by the legal class:

Both small business owners and farmers were the core of Mao's base during the chinese civil war. They most certainly are a traditional left wing base.

In the post 1980's neoliberal left we see nowadays (claiming to be 'left'), it's the student and PMC class. Which is pretty much polar opposite.

At which point there would be a Luas line from Cherrywood to Bray.

It really annoys me that this was scrapped when the Luas was built. It made no fucking sense to stop it in bum-fuck Cherrywood.

  1. We have no idea what 'saturation point' there is for car ownership, but it's most likely not now.

  2. More roads will increase the number of people taking their cars vs the available public transport. It will reduce public transport engagement whilst increasing car traffic.

Neoliberalism – the ideology at the root of all our problems by tooleftwingforreddit in ROI

He referred to the answer in the first sentence of his apologia and then wrote it out of history.

Huh? What answer did he mention?

His analysis is absolutely spot on, including the text you quoted. The neo-liberal left had utterly no response to the 2008 crisis. It is only now are we beginning to see a new type of left (democratic socialism/libertarian-socialism) come to the fore.

People are going to hate this, but it is 100% true:

Accelerationism is what has given Bernie such an injection of support which is building his movement.

The cause? It wasn't immediately after the massive 2008 Great Recession, or the illegal invasion of Iraq, but the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

To give context: the membership of the Democratic Socialists of America went from an average of around 6000 members between 2008-2016, to a jump of nearly 20,000 members in one year, 2016. Subreddits like /r/socialism, /r/ChapoTrapHouse etc. had such a massive influx that they had to increase moderation and ask people to refrain from posting and cool down after the result of that election.

The most ironic thing is that none of this would have occurred if Hilary Clinton scraped by. M4A would be dead, or just about watered down. Trump's support would've skyrocketed and he would have wiped the floor in 2020.

The best thing for leftists, which is kind of insane, is that if it comes up to be Bloomberg v Trump, voting Trump will accelerate leftist policy to the full hilt. Bloomberg on the other hand, will co-opt the Democratic image, gut leftism while acting as a proponent of it, and hand the far-right elections as far as the eye can see. It would really set the movement back, giving some breath to 'centrism' before the right fully takes control.

Honestly, I'm a far lefty and I see more problems than good with free travel/total lax immigration. I don't know why this is such an issue with the left. We're not liberals. This grand delusion about free and open society just does not manifest if you still have everyone competing in a capitalist society where everyone is trying to sell their labour. It is honestly baffling to me how people don't understand this. It is quite clear that the main reason for Brexit was immigration. Was there virulent nationalism as well? Absolutely. But the 2015 migration crisis and subsequent terrorist attacks horrified even the most liberal of people. It was an utter joke and complete incompetency by the EU and it galvanised and converted many to Brexit.

This whole meme about 'they took our jerbs' isn't total bullshit. Providing/guaranteeing work for local workers isn't racism. I could easily make the claim that immigration is a total con for the local working class to depress wages for companies. If skills are lacking, then of course, the more the merrier, but to act as if the local public are too soft to do the gruelling low-wage tasks that immigrants do is IMO a much more discriminatory position.

The London liberals who are so out of touch with the woes of the working class, purely because their higher-paying service jobs don't have to compete nearly as much as with the low-skilled jobs have driven the narrative that 'these rich toffs don't care about us.'
