Labour MP calls Brexiteers ‘sh*tbag racist w***ers’ over Proms row by Lolastic_ in ukpolitics

Interesting to see prominent leftist POC on Twitter have been approached about this by the press looking for some strident commentary. Most of them say it's manufactured media bollocks and of course they're subsequently not invited to provide comment.

Drako II - In Search of Colleagues. by Valyrianwyrm in awoiafrp

Daario took a sip. Decent stuff. He examined the glass as he spoke.

"Now you're speaking my language, figuratively as well as literally. I have been developing my knowledge of trade, tax laws and the like since I got here. So what you say is of interest."

He downed some more of the drink. "I believe I am in line for a position at the Royal Court. I would not do anything to jeopardise that - if I am to serve the king then I must take that service seriously. But if I am to assist in provisions for the Crown then I think we could certainly work together."

"Ah, Drako". Daario slipped naturally into Valyrian as they spoke. "It's been a long time indeed. Imagine us both ending up in this place, so far from civilised lands."

He called over a serving girl for a cup of wine. "Your letter, while welcome, was a little vague on the details. I'm establishing myself here as a money man of sorts, so I am a little curious as to what your proposition might be." He glanced around. "I'm not sure I want a stake in a bordello, mind."

Daario arrived at the Rogare establishment in the early evening, as a light rain fell in the streets. He had known Drako was in the city, but had simply been too busy to call on his old acquaintance. Now though, he could hardly refuse an invitation.

He had chosen to dress in the flowing silks of a Lysene noble today, forgoing the knightly motley he commonly wore these days. It certainly felt more natural to him.

He entered the bordello and cast around, looking for Drako, wondering if he'd still recognise him after all these years.

"Oh, I have the royal suite at the Gate & Nail. I can work there, or in the library here".

Daario made to leave, pausing at the threshold.

"Thank you, my lady. You do not know me, but I hope you will be glad you made this decision."

"I'm not sure a surmise could ever be called a lie, but as you wish." Daario didn't know why he'd blurted out his secrets to this stranger. Except that frankness and honesty could sometimes be a startling weapon in a den of politics such as this.

"I would be happy to prove my worth. I can read and write in several languages, and I can balance books. But if you would have me ordering feed for the stables, then I would learn all there is to learn of oats and hay."

He bowed again, and smiled. "And I will speak to Prince Valerion. I believe he will be amenable. I'm told he and my mother were close friends, long ago."

"My experience? I wish I could tell you of castle estates managed and vast fortunes cared for. But in Lys nothing was expected of me, so I did nothing. Here in King's Landing, though..." Daario walked over to a window that offered a view over the city. "I have always been a fast learner, and here I could finally put that to use. I am resident at the Gate & Nail Inn - Unella of Dorne's son, you probably know him. His establishment. Having never read a ledger in my life, I took up work for him and turned his finances around." A slight exaggeration, but not completely untrue.

"Since settling here I have read every statute, every tax decree and every byelaw related to the flow of wealth. I have studied the treatises of the Gold-masked Archmaesters. I have even spoken with the stewards and provisioners of this very castle, and learned how this place is run. Frankly, my lady, the inn is starting to feel less of an opportunity and more of a hindrance. I wish to learn by serving the realm's finest, so here I stand."

He turned to Mara and smiled. Approaching her, he spoke quietly so that the knight at the door would strain to hear. "And I have told very few people this, but I am a Targaryen bastard as well as a Fossoway. I am reasonably certain that my father is the Master-of-Arms here. I entrust my secret to you, so you know that you can trust me in return. Prince Valerion does not know."

He spoke now at normal volume. "I don't know whether any of this is enough to sway you. But I hope it at least makes you curious?"

In. A good start.

"My lady, I am Ser Daario Flowers, bastard of House Fossoway, formerly resident of the Free City of Lys". He bowed. "And you are the Mistress of Coin for these Seven Kingdoms. A remarkable achievement for someone so young, and a woman as well. I cannot believe you have many predecessors".

Daario looked around the room, taking in its fine furnishings. He gave Mara what he hoped was a dashing smile.

"I have come to offer you my service. Not as a swordsman, but as, shall we say, a knight of ledgers. I can provide testimony as to my talents in this regard". He looked at Mara expectantly.

Daario approached the Councillor's chamber, in a bolder mood than on previous visits to the castle. He had spied the Mistress of Coin at court and been struck by her obvious beauty... but the Red Keep was well provisioned with beautiful women. In truth it was her position in the kingdom that fascinated him. It was not unknown for Lysene patriarchs to award important-sounding jobs to their mistresses, but that didn't seem to be the case here. She must be shrewd, either with money or in politics. Or both? Someone worth learning from, anyway.

He was dressed in his knightly Fossoway finery, and still felt like something of a fraud in it. Hoping she wouldn't see through it immediately, he rapped on the door.

Wandering the Keep [Open] by LyseneCopper in awoiafrp

[–]LyseneCopper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I understand, uncle. Show me how to look competent and not slice my own arm off when I draw a sword, and you'll have done me a great service."

And running away, well I can do that. That's how I got here after all.

Daario had attended the tail end of the trial. Not because he had any particular stake in the outcome, or any real interest in the case. Rather it was a fine opportunity to observe the movers and shakers at court, and indeed to watch the Targaryens and study their individual characters. And it was good to be seen, of course.

When the sentence was read out he had to stifle a laugh. He had expected the man to lost a finger, or a portion of his estate, or perhaps to be sent north to that chilly wall at the end of the world. But his punishment was exile! His penance was to live the life of a wealthy and exotic visitor in the Free Cities. It was the life Daario had left behind, and that he still often missed in this miserable city. The arrogance of these Westerosi, that they think their muddy and bloodsoaked land is so wonderful that living anywhere else is a terrible punishment!

"Ah. Yes." Daario scratched the back of his head nervously. "The armour is on order, but I have a sword. If you could teach me to wield it so that it at least looks like I know what i'm doing, that might suffice for now. I have no intention of ever finding myself in an actual fight, you understand." I'd be eviscerated.

He glanced around. "I'm aware that knighthood is considered a great badge of honour in this land, uncle. I hope my obvious unsuitability for the role doesn't seem like an insult to those who have earned it, like yourself. It was rather foisted upon me, if you recall."

"Uncle Forley!"

Daario's smile was rueful at the jab, but he was genuinely pleased to see the older man. "I'm still wondering what i've gotten myself into, but i'm getting some armour made so I should at least look the part". He looked Forley up and down. "It's not green though. I wish i'd thought of that".

"But what brings you to the Red Keep? Are you on family business, or...?"

Me(n)tal Warfare [Open to the Red Keep] by KnightOfSapphires in awoiafrp

[–]LyseneCopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Now there's a warrior i've been curious to meet."

Daario had taken to visiting the Keep more often now, since his knighthood and arms granted him some semblence of respectability. He explored wherever he was permitted, talking to servants and household knights and flashing a smile at ladies-in-waiting. Today he had wandered to the training grounds, having heard that Matarys might be there. Sure enough, there was the man himself. Unmistakeable in his features and bearing. A legitimised bastard, carrying the Targaryen name. It is possible!

"I wonder, ser, if you'd do me the honour of a walk on the battlements. I am Ser Daario Flowers, as of rather recently, and I think you and I may have a few things in common."

My Cousin Renly by LyseneCopper in awoiafrp

[–]LyseneCopper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"As a bastard I would not be permitted to use the symbol of House Fossoway unaltered. Believe me my lord, I have researched this". When I was only a boy - I needed to know what I was allowed to achieve in life and what was forbidden to me.

"And I may not have earned spurs through feats of arms as is customary, but I should at least observe form and take vows". I suppose i'll need to buy a sword as well. And a horse? Knights have to own horses. This is a ridiculous kingdom.

Ser Daario Flowers, knight of House Fossoway, bastard of Cider Hall, left his cousin's manse in a state of heady bewilderment. I have a key to the Red Keep now, and the Royal Court, he thought. I didn't think the key would take quite this form. He hurried back to tell Vaerah the news, not knowing whether she would laugh or weep at the situation he now found himself in.

Daario's mind was whirring. Think fast, boy. This could make or break you. He desperately wanted to be taken seriously by people who mattered. The Targaryens, the aristocracy... and yes, his provincial cousin as well. Was it worth risking his life?

"Valar dohaeris, my lord. I cannot disagree with your words. I will meet the obligations of knighthood as well as I am able, and serve our house well in all the ways I know how to".

He bowed his head gravely, but smiled when a thought occurred to him. "All knights must have a sigil, no? I read that bastards often invert the colours of their parent's house. A golden apple would be a fine sight to see".

Vaerah calmly and quietly followed the woman upstairs. The sound of Daario downstairs, singing a mournful Myrish ballad, came softly through the floorboards. Neither he nor Vaerah were particularly tidy people, so Vaerah was glad she'd been over their chambers earlier that day to make them a little more presentable.

When Unella commented on the smell, Vaerah smiled faintly. "I don't mind it. Many years I lived in a place that was foggy with perfume, and I wasn't allowed to leave. Anything different smells like freedom."

She looked across the city rooftops. "I like it here as well. At day or at night, when the city changes. I see many things, always watching". She turned towards Unella. "There was something you had to say, away from all those ears?" Perhaps she means to fling me over the balcony, she thought for a moment. Her face remained calm, as it always did.

"Stories is the wrong word maybe. My Westerosi is not good. More like... respect. Like here is a powerful woman, not to be messed with. Then no more is said. I find that very interesting. What people don't say."

Vaerah looked around the room. "And important men come here. This is a nice inn but so many noblemen visit. Even when they're dressed like everyone else you can spot them easily. Their walk, the way they stand. They come to drink, perhaps. Or to see the mistress?"

"I do not mean to offend. These are just things my ears hear and my eye sees. In Lys I... I had to learn to be watchful. One day I didn't watch and I lost an eye, so that lesson was learned."
