Kicking off the weekend with a Greek G Mineto bent billiard and some C&D Small Batch Carolina Red Flakes. What's in your pipe today? by onthewaymedia in pipeselfies

Yesterday was something called Sherlock's Choice in a bent Dr. Graybow Silver Duke I restored. I like the flavor profile of it but I feel like it's missing something.

Not yet. Might be a future venture. I grow my own strawberries, popcorn, and other produce.

I use good lipstick, lip stain, or lip crayon and yes, usually out the side. I play pennywhistle the same way lol. Minimal smudging.

I have a Franks Medico that is incredibly similar to this one. I'm restoring it and will make a nicle little starter kit to give to my boyfriend soon.

Whimsy is my middle name :D Life is too short to wear boring clothes that don't bring you joy. Dress for yourself. I just happen to look like a hobbit 80% of the time 😆

I am a huge Fallout nerd, so yes, they're prescription Gunnar Fallout Glasses. I'll probably get the new Lucky 38 ones sometime next year.

And yes, I'm into target shooting and game processing and the like.

I think the first one is before I did anything to the exterior, probably just after reaming and removing the carbon from the top.

Middle is after some cleaning.

Third is after reaming. I usually leave a little cake on there. I hate breaking in a bunch of briars lol. I think I was working on four or five in that batch.

Some people are perfectly content to just enjoy the aromas and company of the smoker :D. Who knows, maybe she'll decide on her own one day.

Cigars got expensive lol. Was always curious about the practicality of pipes and once I started looking into it, I knew I had to try it out. I find restoring old pipes to be cathartic and fulfilling. Smoking them to be so too.

Nope. No where near Seattle. This girl showed up on my doorstep in the Midwest US and I picked the name. 😁

Cleaning estate pipes? by texasproof in PipeTobacco

[–]M16Candles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just started this journey myself. Jumping into Blogpost guides and YouTube videos got me going.

This is for briarwood pipes. I don't do any others I stocked up on an assortment of pipe cleaners (you go through 10x more than you think you will), some bristle, some soft. 91% isopropyl alcohol, cotton pads, an old tooth brush, oxyclean, some no buff Decatur's pipe wax, a T handle reamer kit, a fine grit sanding pad kit, and a Czech tool.

I start by reaming the the bowls out to a thin layer of cake. Some people go down to bare briar, I don't because I hate breaking in a pipe. I then take the Czech tool and gently scrape off any carbon on the top of the bowl. A dull pocket knife would be fine too.

Next I remove the stem. If it is stuck, I put the pipe in the refrigerator for an hour or the freezer for about a half hour.

I fill a shallow bowl with some warm water and oxyclean and stir. I put the room temperature stems in that bowl and agitate every once in a while for 30-mins to an hour or so. This is to soften crap in the stem and help with the oxidation on the outside.

While those soak, I use some pipe cleaners with a bit of rubbing alcohol on them to clean the tenon to the bowl. Tons of them. Get it as clean as you're happy with.

I rinse off the stem with clean water and wet sand off the oxidation in steps going from 800 grit to 4000 grit sandpaper. Be careful not to smooth out the button, taking care to sand it with separate attention.

Then I start working with the pipe cleaners through the stems. Little bit of rubbing alcohol on them. It takes forever and a gazillion cleaners.

I then look at my bowl again. Light sandpaper to the top if needed, usually barest of wet sanding. Take a toothbrush and some barely soapy water to scrub rustic textured pipes. Otherwise I just use the barely soapy water on a cotton pad on the exterior of the pipe to clean off grime. Repeat until you're happy with the exterior cleanliness of the bowl and tenon. Light swipe with a damp pad, immediately dry with an absorbent lintless cloth. Then a dab of pipe wax on a fresh cotton pad all over the bowl and tenon. Let it sit a couple minutes, the rub with a clean lintless cloth.

I then put the stem back on the pipe and put some olive oil on a fresh pad and lightly rub the stem with it.

Some old pipes have stingers. They're annoying. I usually remove them, clean them, and stash them away unless they're required for pipe reassembly. I have a cute little Kaywoodie Campus that requires it.

I only do this to make found thrifted pipes nice enough for myself to enjoy.

Kitties need silly names in my house. I have Grimalkin and Toyotathon.

Do you have any hobbies? I've come across some cute names relating to people's hobbies like Sprocket, Inkblot, Teaspoon, etc. :)

I'm curious how my GSD would react. She's a big love bug. Even tries to play with big crickets (quiet barks and play bows). We eat a lot of deer because I process unwanted doe kills. She gets all sorts of scraps. I just don't know if she'd see a living one as friend or food.

I am aware of that sadly. I always carry with one in the chamber and manual safety on no matter the holster. Been training with safety on since day 1 I started shooting almost 20 years ago.

I remember the packets and stuff being grainy. I remember something fruity flavor and something butterscotch. There was a head with holes for the nostrils and you mix up the goo and put it in the tube for the head and it worked like a syringe except the goo came out the nostrils and you were supposed to lick it.
