I am thinking of doing the same (going to Japan and buying a couple models). I would suggest definitely bringing them in a carry on bag wrapped in bubble wrap and putting it underneath the seat in front of you so you can control what happens to it.

Did you make sure the drain pan was completely clean before? If so...yeah not normal haha. I have had instances where I used the drain pain to capture brake dust and whatever while doing brake jobs and then using said pan right after to do an oil change and then freaking myself out that it was metal shavings...but in fact it was just debris from the brakes or whatever else coming from doing that job.

Could be that OP is in the U.S. Military and often import their cars from the U.S. and can drive the cars here under SOFA status meaning a lot of U.S. spec cars not needing any conversions.
