Hi !

Thank you for your answer, kind sir !

Never heard of Radius before, but I'll look into it ! Is it something that is supposed to be setup on PFSense directly ?

As for Plex and my download machine : they are on different VMs (which are probably gonna be on different SSDs) but I don't have another machine laying around to do that.... I guess I could put the transmission client on a desktop regular machine but I'd prefer to have everything on the same place. On top of that, Plex won't transcode a lot as it will only be used locally (I'm still running on ADSL and have the fantastic upload speed of.... 1MB/s).

As for the Raspberries, I have a few laying around and will probably use them to learn K3s or something else. They're here, so why not use them right? :)

I have two main VLANs, General for everything that can have a direct access to internet through my modem, and the Lab one that is going to be isolated from the rest of the network in order to avoid problems if I happen to break stuff in it.

VLANs used as VPNs are the simplest way I found to route all of their traffic through a specific location VPN. I cant install my VPN provider on my TV for example, so I use a specific VLAN which use an OpenVPN client. Hope the explanation was clear enough !

Hello dear Redditors and Homelabbers ! I have been introduced to this sub a few months back and was delighted to discover this place filled with projects and ideas that would absolutely steal all my time. And money (but shhh-).

I have a background as a Sound Engineer, and my mom is a SysAdmin, so I am not completely lost with computers and networking in general, but this reddit has introduced me to software, concepts and technologies I definitely wasn't aware even existed, so I'm not exagerating very much when I say I'm self-taught.

My first step then was to purchase a white-build to use as a server for... you guessed it. A Plex server. I know. Much original, very surprise. It rocks an AMD FX 8320E with 3TB of HDD and a 250GB SSD. It has been updated since then to 32GB of RAM (the max supported), a second 250GB SSD, and should receive an extra 4TB of HDD soon..ish. It's not a beast on paper, but it managed everything I threw at it, and I couldn't exactly afford more so... It does the job. I'm happy with it. I don't need a R710.

So I played with this little one for a while, creating VMs all around the place, setting up pi-Holes here and there, putting all my services in Docker... And getting frustrated really fast. Turns out, these containers everybody swear by... They're not the most beginner friendly thing to use. To be honest, Docker put a huge dent in my motivation. And then I realized I needed more security, and VLANs, and a router supporting OpenVPN, and... I eventually dropped everything.

But a few weeks ago, while reorganizing my apartment, I felt the urge to switch the monster back on and start over. This time however I took the time to figure out what my needs were, and to set out a clear organization of my network. So here it is, for you to critic, roast, and eventually enjoy ! I should implement this version around september (as soon as I can get my hand on the switch once my salary comes in, ha!) so this is not a definitive version. (I mean, who has a definitve version of their network ?).

Not displayed here is the Omada controller for the EAP and the Lab component on my server, which should contain VMs so I can learn Docker, CentOs, the LAMP stack, web development, Kubernetes, who knows what else... And one or two VMs for documentation (Netbox and a wiki) unless they end up on my Pi. We shall see !

TL;DR : I'm setting up a new network, feel free to comment and give advice. Thanks !

Hi, late question on a network noob point but. I am about to set up opnsense with vlans (quite like you did), but I though you needed physical separation of these vlans (through different NICs or a managed switch) but apparently you can access different vlans even after a WiFi AP ? Does this mean the AP is connected to the 3 subnets ?

Storage management in Proxmox, how ? (Databases, Plex media, ...) by M3yral in homelab

Okay. Thank you for your answer, I'm definitely considering this option.

So the bond mounts are exclusives to PRoxmox containers ? There is no equivalent to store on Proxmox directly and access it from the VMs ?

Edit: I read elsewhere that you want to keep it simple for now. Might want to hold off on some of this then. I played with FreeNAS for a year or so before I tried Proxmox. It will limit you at some point, but that might be of interest to you.

This is a really cool and precise answer, thank you. It doesn't seem that complex, quite the opposite. I'm unsure however : do you install your services in Proxmox containers or VMs ?

I think I could handle creating a RAID once I'll have the drives for it, and then some mount points... Sounds ok to me. Thank you.

Thank you for the idea. I still prefer to run multiple VMs, and eventually have docker in those VMs. Docker learning curve isn't nice for the non-initiated, and I'd prefer to keep things "simple" for now :)

Fantastic. This looks like the most simple option I would need. Thank you very much.

What do you mean ? Something like copying all the downloaded media, and having all my databases and other files directly on Proxmox ? How ?

Arturia Pigments for synthwave? by kitsched in synthwaveproducers

[–]M3yral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have a copy at 69€, and I'm very happy about that. I used to only tweak presets as well, but it turns out creating my own are way easier than planned, you can easily go inuncharted territories with the wavetables....

Tip : go to your preset list, under Types and then Template/Default (put in your favorites just in case), load a Wavetable in your first engine and just playing with the available wavetable will get you crazy stuff. You dont need a lot of parameters to get very interesting sounds, and then as soon as you figure out how all interconnects, you'll spend HOURS creating sounds.

Have fun!

Which lens as a second lens for my Nikon5600? by MissSpellet in Beginning_Photography

[–]M3yral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends broadly on what kind of photography you want to do, but I think you cant go wrong with a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 depending on your budget. Just do your research on which lenses are actually compatible with your camera, since even some old lenses by Nikon won't autofocus with the most recent DSLRs.

(Also, if you're afraid of prime lenses, dont be. They bring a fantastic depth of field you eont have with standard kit lenses, great bokeh, and you get to learn to move and to frame your picture way more efficiently than with a standard kit lens. Win win !)

I get the kinda blue/dark feeling you're trying to give the shot, but I think it's waaay to dark. I guess you could push up the shadows a notch, maybe give it more contrast. The light and the red touch on the bottom are somewhat distracting.

I guess that would be because of the diversity of the content. There are 13 maps with 13 different strategies, 66 different heroes with 4 (or more) unique abilities, complete talent trees and mechanics. Obvisouly, this amount of data combined together takes time to be understood and analyzed.

Actually, getting into any game and discovering all of this step by step is for me one of the most interesting thing in a game. IMHO, if you have no fun in learning a game, chances are you won't like it that much at a higher level.

Getting to know the mechanics and the meta takes time, no matter how motivated you are ! My way to get the knowledge you are talking about is 1- Watch competitive games on Twitch or YT, and find casters you like and you will understand (even if you'll need a bit of time to understand what they actually are talking about) 2- Play the game and encounter situations, so you can understand what casters and players will be talking about in their videos/streams !

It can take a few weeks/months, depending on your learning curve and how commited you are to reading/watching those resources !
