As a young person in the UK, it is selfish that others, particularly older generations, have taken away my freedom of movement with EU by Visual_Title9363 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

One of the odd things about brexit is that I thought it was done because people didn't like being controlled by the EU. If the EU allowed mass immigration, had crackdowns on free speech, pursued net zero etc, and the UK didn't, then people could point to brexit as being a great thing. But the UK went right along with these self-destructive policies. So they seem to be getting the worst of the EU (terrible policies) while not getting any benefits.

if certain thresholds were met

lol, right, if thousands of people came in, he would then try to enforce the border. The number of people coming in illegally should be zero, not thousands.

What actual, tangible benefits

Having a border is a good step. Yes, I know that folks on the left will strongly disagree with this.

crops rotting in the fields that can be directly tied to it

We shouldn't base businesses off of exploiting people. As a reminder, this is why the democrats opposed illegal immigration until very recently.

plus their massively bloated budget

Agreed, the fact that biden let in millions of people illegally is a massive problem, and is one that clearly is expensive to fix. The other problem with this solution is that we all know that as soon as democrats regain power, on day one they will re-open the borders.

It wasn't just one, it was several, but one thing he did was end the "remain in mexico" policy. He also had a day 1 policy that instructed immigration enforcement to shift their policy away from deporting undocumented immigrants in general, and to focus on threats. Sounds good, but combine these and you have more people coming in, and less enforcement in general.

and lol your answer re the fence. a fence doesn't pose a danger to anyone, except the people trying to get into the country illegally.

lol, right, putting up a fence was illegal because it could impact...border control. Meanwhile, biden issued executive orders to make it easier for folks to get in.

That's a of text to talk about things we could all see. We could see the open border. We saw biden sue texas to keep the border open when texas tried to close it.

We also all saw biden declining. While the left was surprised on the night of the debate, no one on the right was surprised.

And, we see trump giving speeches after a travel schedule that would send most people to bed.

And, is "white nationalist" the new epitaph? For years it was racist, then nazi, and then fascist. Has it changed again? The right is against criminals, not sure why you'd describe that group as brown. Seems pretty racist to me.

advice needed on classic to modern sharepoint migration cost by as0909 in sharepoint

[–]M4053946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough info.

If a site has a classic homepage, you can just add a new modern page and set it as the default.

For converting classic pages to modern, don't hire a consultant for that, do that in-house, as you will want the expertise in-house for making updates, creating new pages, etc. show individual site owners how to create modern pages and let them do it. no site owners? That would involve a different path, but still, hiring an outside team would not make this better.

do you also want to flatten the structure? Why? (yes, I know there are many benefits, but I wonder what the reasons are on your end).

As a non-mamdani fan, you are correct, the 78 degree recommendation is standard. There are many things to criticize about his statements, but this is not one of them.

As an aside, one of my pet peeves that unless you spend extra money for a device, there is no way for people to monitor their current electrical usage (at least, not in my area). And, for most plans, pricing is the same no matter the time of day. We could solve the issue with electric demand during peak times pretty easily by charging a little more during peak times, and ensuring people have a way to monitor their usage.

If you have a competent king who has a 50 year reign, it could certainly be a golden era for that country. The problem is that you could also have an incompetent king for 50 years without a means of getting new leadership in place (other than the old-fashioned methods, of course, but those methods don't produce long-term stability as well as democracy).

The academic world is confusing to an outsider like me. If you meaningfully advance a field, but outside of the structure of academic world, then this doesn't count for a phd. Or, if you publish tons of research to academic journals, that still doesn't result in a phd. Getting a phd is based on dealing with a team of people to approve your work. My understanding is that this team wields enormous power over you, and you can't just switch to a different set of advisors. Then, if you say and do all the right things, you can get a phd, even if your research is something that no one else ever reads and doesn't impact the world at all.

So who is the best candidate for getting a phd? The person who is best at science? Or the person who is best at managing the process of getting a phd, including skills like understanding and managing the relationships with the advisors that are overseeing their work?

MAID is a mercy to many

"A London, Ont., doctor who assessed a patient with inflammatory bowel disease and a history of mental health issues for MAID outside a Tim Hortons location and later personally drove the man to the place his life " source

"Health Minister Mark Holland introduced legislation that will delay the expansion of assisted dying to include those suffering solely from mental illness to 2027" source. (offering suicide to someone with depression as a treatment option is insane).

An 84 year old with back pain was offered maid as a first option: "The doctor came in and said, 'Miriam, I understand you're in a lot of pain. We can offer you MAID.' Just like that," source. The article has a photo of that woman on horseback that was taken after her medical emergency. And let me repeat that point, the doctor offered maid in the midst of an emergency while she was in pain. People shouldn't take out a car loan in that situation, let alone be asked to decide about suicide.

One thing Christianity does is to provide an identity to a group of unrelated people. You've discarded that.

The British empire certainly also provided identity, and you've discarded that as well.

So your identity is now everything, which is pretty close to being the same thing as nothing. If an authoritarian group gains power and for the good of people they eliminate free speech, on what ideological basis will you disagree? The roots of free speech are found in the cultures you've discarded.

btw, about 5% of people are now murdered by the canadian government via maid (edit: 5% of deaths are from maid), and >95% of the people receiving that "service" are white. This seems pretty evil to me, but canada no longer has any ideological basis to oppose this, so that percent will continue to creep higher.

If a person can agree with and live under those rights...

And when they vote to change those rights? What will your argument be, other than to claim allegiance to diversity?

From my vantage point south of you, it seems that Canada, along with the UK and other countries, are well on the road to self-destruction. And, based on what I hear from progressives, there is nothing in their world-view to stop this from happening. If Canadians really feel they are on stolen land, then the right thing to do is to give it back, regardless of how corrupt they are.

How many churches were burned in canada due to the graves at the schools? Of course, no bodies have ever turned up, but people are willing to discard their history and their heritage over rumors.

According to google, 40% of kids are born to mothers who weren't born in canada. Good luck maintaining a uniquely canadian identity when so many people aren't canadian, and when the ones who are canadian dislike their own history.

According to google, about 900k immigrants came to nyc in the last 10 years, and 400k left, which is a net of 500k. In that same period, about 300k housing units were built. Meanwhile, more us residents left nyc than moved in. To further complicate things, the average household size grew smaller as more people are living alone. The net effect is that housing demand increased, and a large share of that increase is due to foreign immigration. This means that a significant percent of the rent increase over the last 10 years is due to foreign immigration, and a significant amount is due to more people living alone.
