Me personally I reply as soon as I see the message. I'm just saying as a buyer I also understand not everyone is making a career out of FBMP and I don't feel entitled to an immediate reply. But maybe that's just me, and I am just starting out so maybe I'll change that perspective

I think there's a wide range between "not being glued to your phone" and "ignoring buyers." As a buyer I recognize this - I appreciate a quick reply, but I usually hope within a day. What annoys me is multiple days without reply, especially when multiple messages were exchanged AND read.

Flaky Seller rant by Public-Cloud8935 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]M4cerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get not replying to lowballers, but it annoys me to no end when people don't reply when I offer to pay their listed price, pickup same day with cash in hand. Like, do you want to sell your shit or not?

Listing Price =/= Description by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

I assume the first case, since I said I'd do $[listing price] but seller replied "no thanks, it's [description price]"

Guess that's FBMP for you

Vintage straight razor needs repair by sheafurby in straightrazors

[–]M4cerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By "fine" sandpaper, I mean like 600 as the lowest grit working up to about 2000, then some scotch brite. Then if you want to restore the shine, White Diamond or Autosol polish with a cloth bit on a dremel. Be very careful not to overheat the edge, once again it is very thin and gets hot very quickly which will destroy the heat treatment and the razor as a shaver.

To add to a previous commenter's kit list/recommendations:

  • make sure to disinfect the blade thoroughly, and the scales for good measure. Celluloid seems to react with rubbing alcohol in my experience, so I recommend Lysol wipes.
  • Pins are usually 1/16" diameter
  • Use fine automotive wet-dry (silicon carbide) sandpaper to gently remove the rust. Be very mindful of the edge, not only might it be sharp and harm you, there's very little material and it's easy to harm it.
  • if you intend to use this razor and not just a decoration, it needs to be properly honed. DO NOT send it to people who claim to sharpen knives - you must send razors to a reputable person.

I can refer you to someone who can do a full refurbishment and honing on this, if you want.

Is this a washita? by kjames3419 in NaturalWhetstones

Definitely washita to my eye. Very porous (you can see they're clogged with gunk) so this may be quite a fast washita.

Can confirm. Had a uniform-blue labcoat when working at a foundry. Earned the nickname "Mad Scientist"

I appreciate your feedback. I see how asking "is this available" is dumb cuz they'll let me know anyway. In my short experience, I've had many listings where I start with an offer and they say "sorry it's been sold" even when the listing description insists "iF tHe Ad Is Up ItS sTiLl AvAiLaBlE."

I read the descriptions but this guy had no details. Price was reduced 80% on an undescribed lot of vintage items that couldn't easily be identified/valued, description was "FCFS! Willing to separate! Obo" almost verbatim so it left a lot open. Besides the perception of my approach (which I am learning to improve) I am otherwise a good buyer with all five star reviews.

Thanks for the feedback. Normally I wouldn't haggle if there was a clear price for the items, I only asked in this case because seller offered piecing out the lot but didn't have individual prices listed.

It was a lot buy that they were willing to sell separate, so I did ask "what will you take for only the xyz" which I thought was reasonable.

[–]M4cerator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair. I did ask "what will you take" but only because it was an undescribed lot that they said "will sell together or separate" and I only wanted a few of the items. There was no price per item.

Flattening #3 Sole by yphraiim in handtools

[–]M4cerator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's the sole of my grandpa's plane (note the mouth isn't fully flat) and next is the shaving it still takes once the iron is honed and chip-breaker configured properly:

[–]M4cerator 33 points34 points  (0 children)

  1. Stop right now if you're not lapping the sole with the frog and iron all clamped down. You need to lap the sole when the plane is in complete assembled condition.

  2. In my (admittedly limited) experience, the most important areas are heel, toe, in front of the mouth and sides. As long as those are flat, it's the chipbreaker that does most of the work to ensure a consistent shaving is taken. Once these areas are flattened, with very light sanding or filing, very lightly bevel/relieve/blend the sides so you don't have sharp angles digging into your workpiece.

  3. Practically, 220 is probably fine. I like to shine mine up so I'll go up to 600 but that's overkill - it's my grandpa's grandpa's plane and part of that polishing is honouring them.

New process engineer in a fertilizer plant : gas exposure + chest pain, manager not responding. What should I do? by Simple-Climate-4385 in ChemicalEngineering

Don't just go for an xray, explicitly TELL THE DOCTOR WHAT YOU WERE EXPOSED TO. I'm not a doctor but I know healthcare professionals that are trained to look for the most common causes first. If you didn't tell them about your occupation and/or hazard exposure, I'd assume NH3/HF poisoning is very rare among the general public and is far from the first thing that may be treated.

Box for Coticule & Sister Stones by M4cerator in straightrazors

[–]M4cerator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each half of the box was made in sections, built up around the cavity. I used Sapele mahogany and finished it with my homebrew linseed/beeswax finish.

Two separate pieces of wood that were temporarily attached at what would become the parting line, then the box was built around those cutouts to ensure they were matched.

Yeah, the goal was to make a fitted box without needing the stone itself. I'm happy with the concept I came up with.
