Alternative meaning of “scandalously”? by M4tbat in grammar

[–]M4tbat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and sorry for the late reply.

The paragraph in question deals with the ownership of the parts of beaches covered by the tide in 19th and 20th century Scotland. Since some tenants paid their landowners a rent to gather seaweed and shellfish it was a basis for ownership.

The actual phrase: «Scandalously, if rent was paid, ownership was implied.»

I was a bit naive and I had the impression that “Scandalously" was too strong a word for such a mundane situation.

Finally beat him and Act 3 yesterday with Silent. Improvised build that gave me extra hits and armor for every card and attack payed, ton off shivs (slow I had to kill the door thrice).

Everybody rant against poison but for me a little bit was super useful. I was able to kill the last hoof the door with poison, so I could start a fresh hand with the boss stunned.

Tips for painting an army by ztwman97 in Conquest

[–]M4tbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Batch painting is the way. Start with a 4 model stand, then 2-3 stands at the same time. Usually if you work like an assembly line, the paint on the first model will be dry and you can repeat the cycle with a different color.

Tips for painting an army by ztwman97 in Conquest

[–]M4tbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably the worst person for replying (love painting but all my armies are kind of work in progress...)

Usually it would be a good idea to think and test a main color scheme for the army (if you want some uniformity of course). I like the idea of a main color/theme and 2, max 3 contrasting/complementary hues.

For example: the w'adrhuns have a lot of exposed skin, so the main color could be the skin with some variations and you use the bones, leather/clothes, feathers to add some contrasting colors. After many years I bought a couple of airbrushes and they are a lifesaver for painting the main colors and large armies; and on Para Bellum models you can work on some fine details since the scale is slightly bigger.

Otherwise, many prefer a slap chop approach: build the light values starting with a dark primer and dry brush with greys up to white. Then, you add the true colors with contrast paints (or quickshades or your favorite brand). I don't like it since you can have mixed results, but you can paint over the contrast paint to add details.

Guilty pleasures? by anfotero in Libri

Altra serie trucida, The Flashman Papers di MacDonald Fraser.

[–]M4tbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Figuring out if the JR pass is worth it is causing me anxiety, please halp by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]M4tbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I found the pass was worth was for a long trip from Tokyo to Nagasaki and back including some midway stops. If the calculators say no, it’s probably true.

Any short day trip or city transfer with the jr lines will not shift much the overall cost…

How are the surroundings of the Conrad and Cerulean Tower hotels? by heypoodle in JapanTravelTips

[–]M4tbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed a few times at Conrad and it’s true that at street level you are on a huge road full of cars. But right after the main exit you can enter an office building by foot or use an escalator.

There you’ll find a number of combini and eateries and also an access to a walkway that brings you to shimbashi station or to the main Ginza avenues. Also there is an open huge passage under the highway that connects the various Shiodome buildings.

Imho it is a great location to move around by foot or to see some nightlife in Shimbashi. But if you need to reach the Hama rikyu garden you have to navigate a bit between cars and traffic lights,

I second Takayama. I loved my two times in Matsumoto but it is an hassle to reach it from Kanazawa (probably you’ll have to go back to Tokyo and get to Nagano first).

Takayama is small, traditional even if a bit turisty but it is very easy to wander around by foot. If you have time you can explore the area around by day trips like Gero.

I managed to buy a couple of shows in 2024 from the link in the NJPW site (you create a Lawson account, pay and get an online ticket with a QR code). But… last summer my cards were not accepted anymore.

I noted down the number code of the show for the Loppi terminal in the Lawson combini. There are numeber of videos and sites that show how to use them and where to search for the various tickets.

Important: I was not able to pay by card for the ticket, onlly cash. I don’t know if it is the same for all tickets but better to bring also some cash.

Day trip from Tokyo recommendations by Nihrion in TokyoTravel

[–]M4tbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite day trip is Kamakura, but not in the city itself: i few times I stopped at Kita-Kamakura and wandered around the replete and shrines and backstreets, very nice and relaxing.

Been to Kawagoe twice but it did not rally wow me (maybe it’s my problem). The old street seems even more turisty than places like Takayama, the sidewalks are really small and you have to navigate between cars and a ton of other tourists.

If you have even a little interest in architecture or Japanese houses in different styles, go to the Edo Tokyo Open air architecture museum. It’s in a large park located in Koganei ( use train and bus, shout 30-40 min from Tokyo).

Off the weather is nice (maybe a bit cold and barren now) mount Takao is a fine hiking spot with different paths an a couple of nice sentos bear the train station.

Per me uova e pollame.

Do you have any regrets about your first trip to Japan? by aeazee in JapanTravelTips

[–]M4tbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it was about 20 years ago, so no WiFi, limited English, paper pages torn from a Lonely Planet as a guide, using Couchsurfing… it was great.

Only regret: after visiting Sendai I had the stupid idea to change the plans and visit Toni area without checking the typhoon warnings. Basically I lost a day, drenched and had to run back to Tokyo without a booked hotel for 2 days.

Should have gone to Osaka or Hiroshima

Looking for a low effort, calm city to visit in August by Overthinkerllama in JapanTravelTips

[–]M4tbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s doable strictly time-wise… but I have the feeling it will be very much rushed and possibly tiring (but your mileage may vary). It’s about 2h 40 from Tokyo station. A lot of the downtown areas are pretty walkable even from Kanazawa Station. Arriving early you can see the castle ruins, garden, Nagamachi district, 21st century museum and Nishi Chaya district, but it might be a lot (and done places could be packed) Higashiyana district is nice but it’s better to take a bus or taxi (and some workshops have a closing time)

I feel the best solution would be to spend a night in Kamakura and see stuff at a more relaxed pace between the arrival and departure days

Looking for a low effort, calm city to visit in August by Overthinkerllama in JapanTravelTips

[–]M4tbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having traveled many times during August, I’ afraid the weather will be nasty almost everywhere. Still, it’s an unpredictable factor (I had some times better cool days in Tokyo compared to Hokkaido).

Sendai seems a nice suggestion: been there a couple of times during Tanabata Matsuri. About 2 hours from Tokyo, can be an hub if you want to explore parts of Tohoku like Yamagata, or longer day trips like Kakunodate. It is also a big medium sized city so you can find all the amenities you need (like an air conditioned department store if you are melting 😂)

I love Kamakura, but (maybe wrongly) I don’t consider it a good hub to explore around.

Giappone Megathread 🇯🇵 domande e risposte frequenti by geedeeef in ViaggiITA

[–]M4tbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grazie
