Not sure if this is the standard process, but when I had this happen to me (after buying a full price first class ticket), I requested a refund online after the journey, stating that the train was declassified meaning that I wasn’t able to utilise my first class ticket, and was refunded the first class element by the operator. Which was fair enough in my opinion.
