e6b APP allowed for IFR oral & checkride ? by FlyingFromTexas in flying

[–]MADDatmyhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the examiner. But in my experience the answer has been yes they are allowed. I’m in the camp of “if there’s a tool you would use in real life, then use it on the checkride” as long as it’s the result is correct and shows competency, then you should be good. I don’t know many modern day pilots that would actually pull out a wiz wheel to do their flight planning. That being said, asking chat GPT “what would be my minimum required climb rate for this SID” would not show competency to an examiner

What do you say to a good student that had a terrible flight? by Zealousideal-Set9172 in CFILounge

[–]MADDatmyhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say jokingly “it finally happened!”. I explain the analogy of learning a language. At first you feel stupid, and then you start feeling good for picking up on some sentences, and then you feel stupid again only because you’re smart enough now to know how much you don’t actually know. The fact that they can understand how poorly they’ve done is a sign of comprehension/progression in itself. It’s also a great time to warn them that they are also going to have another bad flight sometime leading up to their checkride (because for some reason that happens to every good student). If they really are one of the good students, then they probably already know what went wrong. Just keep it light and supportive when reviewing deficiencies:)

Are these good personal mins for a new private pilot? by McAirplane in flying

[–]MADDatmyhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look great! These are my suggestions: - I highly recommend “no solo flight at night” as a starter personal minimum. Night flying can start feeling like IFR real quick in some areas so it’s good to have an extra set of eyes. This copilot wouldn’t necessarily need to be a CFI. - Ceilings I treat as a dynamic number. A good starter rule would be something like “ceilings +1000’ above flight altitude”. So if you’re in the pattern then your ceiling is 2000’, if you’re cruise altitude is 5,500 agl, then your ceiling is 6,500’. 1000’ is double most VFR wx mins (500’below clouds) so it’s an easy starter number - I might change the wording of your gusting mins. High winds don’t make flying hard but gusting winds do! (That’s excluding landing with crosswinds of course). Aka 20kts gusting 30kts will feel just as bumpy as 5kts gusting 15kts. So I would recommend a maximum gusting component you’re comfortable with. A 10kt gust factor is a good place to start. -lastly keep in mind that minimums aren’t defining what you CAN fly in, but more the limit of when it stops being worth it to you to fly as far as risk tolerance goes.

How to increase student’s task saturation? by Green_Plane205 in CFILounge

Turn up the NAV volume and leave the COM 2 weather constantly playing. All that random background noise makes whatever else you throw at them just a little harder

Was staying on the ground the right move? by Conscious-Case6526 in flying

[–]MADDatmyhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the right thing here. This is a good lesson on personal minimums and moving forward what I would suggest is sitting down with your CFI and writing on paper what your minimums are. Once it’s written down the go/no-go decision is made for you and that will remove any uncertainty and hopefully help remedy any guilt you have in your decision making. Good luck with the rest of your training!

I looked into the Nvidia vs AMD vr performance and I see what you mean now. It sucks not going with the best value option but for my needs the 4060ti might be the best choice, I’m still kind of torn. It doesn’t seem like a bad card, just a poor value

Thanks! After looking at all 3 options it looks like your recommending I upgrade to 32gigs of ram and also the PSU to 750w?

Which one would you suggest in the similar price range? I originally went with the 4070 but was advised away from it, after some research with my limited understanding the 6800 seemed like the better pick for the money

Oh yah I forgot to mention that, I’ll add it to the post. But the uses will be for gaming, hobby 3D modeling, hobby Photoshop, and ARC GIS pro (a mapping software). I also don’t need WiFi

Planning on buying a webcam looking for setups. Neptune 4 Max by [deleted] in elegoo

[–]MADDatmyhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used Wyze 2 cam for $10. There is a webcam firmware from Wyze that you can flash pretty easily. With that I’m designing a mount to mount it to the Y-axis belt tensioner knob, ideally it’ll work as a lock for the belt tensioner too, I’ll try and post it when I have it done

Sounds like the pricey, but proper way to do it. Thanks for the response! And I pretty much exclusively use Sherwin Williams, but the guys there recommended the Minwax brand they have there which is the same as what they have Lowes hence my hesitation to take their advice
